Hotel Campanile Luxemburg, near the Airport, after and during the pandemic Covid 19.
We have been coming to this hotel for at least 25 years, we may have skipped a year or two but generally we book here if we are on our way to a destination in France for the summer holidays or if we want to spend some time in the area around the hotel. We took our children here when they were small, we introduced our parents and other siblings too. The best way to arrive is in the late afternoon when you can have a Bofferding on the terrace (weather permitting).
Remich ( a border town) is a favourite spot but also Thionville (in France, and it too is a lovey city) and of course the beautiful surroundings of Luxemburg City itself, forests, hills, beautiful roads, almost everything appeals. I suppose not many people know that General Patton, is buried at one of the War cemeteries which are – unfortunately- also part of the landscape. We were overjoyed when after a period of a general lockdown, which took the whole world by surprise the borders in Europe opened up again. Time for a well-deserved and much needed break. We decided on Campanile in Luxemburg, after all it isn’t that long a drive, and if you plan it right it is a rather lovely drive through the Ardennes from where we live (The Hague).
Disappointment # 1. We were not able to join the Campanile Club (it has some advantages, esp. the discount prices one can enjoy) but no, the site simply refuses to accept us. Well we had to pay full price, pity as it goes against Dutch nature.
Disappointment # 2. The kitchen now closes at the weekend, so no nice relaxed dinner at the hotel. Pizzas were on offer that was it, no dessert, no nothing
Disappointment # 3. The facilities in the room (the coffee and tea maker) have been removed. No coffee or tea in the morning.
Disappointment # 4. No breakfast was served. Usually there is a buffet with lots of choice foods. Instead we could choose between 3 types of breakfast, 8, 11 or 12 Euros. The difference was a second croissant and a pear I think. No eggs, boiled or otherwise cooked. Very expensive and I don’t know what that stale cheese sandwich was doing in this thrown together eernmmm 'meal'?
Disappointment # 5. Please freeze my icepack for me so we can have a cool drink on the way home. No can do because of the covid 19 rules? There is even a rule which says you cannot use the hotel freezer?
All in all the stay in Campanile Luxemburg was one of the worst in many years. One thing that made up for all these disappointments was that the lady at Reception (I think she only works during the week) recognized me, HAH. The young man who did the morning shift was also very nice so that was another plus.
Oh, if you do plan a stay at this hotel, try and book twin beds, the double bed will not add to marital...

Read moreThere is an old saying, "You get what you paid for." I was initially going to give them at least a 4 stars, the reception staff, Jessica was friendly, enthusiastic and was able to accommodate my requests beyond the standard. However, it is all downhill from here. The room is fine, it's a budget hotel, it is within expectation although there are some minor details that shows its budget nature, such as the worn door.
Then, the incompetence really shows being a small budget hotel. My door is connected to the next room with a door, which is great for families booking rooms. The door wasn't locked which raised serious concerns over privacy and security. I found out this fact when my curious neighbour had attempted to open said door. It should never happen. Jessica asked if I need a wake up call at check in due to my early departure, I agreed as a backup measure. However, it didn't happen, the phone didn't ring at said time. I requested an airport shuttle to take me to the airport in the early morning. The reception desk was empty and a staff member is vacuuming the floor in the restaurant. I ringed the bell and he did not respond and actively ignored my existence, so I presume it isn't his job to handle the reception desk. I waited another 5 mins and past my intented departure time, I decided to leave as a measure of damage control. Fortunately, it is only a short 10 mins walk from the airport and only 1 stop if you're taking the bus.
Anyway, you get what you paid for. 2 stars review for 2...
