Permai Chalet — Hotel in Tioman

I give this place top marks, because it was exactly what I was looking for, at a very reasonable price. Those travellers looking for upper end luxury and service, this place not for you! |I was met by the chalet manager at the ferry pier in Tekek, and he drove me (he charged a lot less than the taxi service in Tekek for the transfer) over the island to the property at Kampung Juara. Juara is a quiet beachfront village, a one lane concrete paved Main Street, beach on one side of the road, jungle on the other. There are two beaches, separated by an outcrop of rocks. Permai Chalets is roughly in the middle of the north beach, close to two convenience stores, (only one was open in January) and several basic restaurants . Each beach is a little less than one kilometre long. My cabin, one of several that all looked identical, backed onto the road, and faced the beach, literally 10 metres away, under a coconut grove. The cabin is basic, but comfortable: a porch with two plastic patio chairs, coffee stand, and a picnic table out front. Inside, a comfortable queen sized bed, fridge (small), small desk and stool, side stand, decent en suite with hot water, well functioning A/C. Soap, but no shampoo. (They don’t supply toilet tissue, if you bring your own, I wouldn’t risk flushing it if I were you!). A kettle and a couple mugs. Thats it. (all I needed!). No TV, no wifi, but there is a strong cell signal. I was there during the off season; many, if not most, of the accommodations were closed, and many of the restaurants. One of the stores was always closed when I went by, and the other did not have much to offer. Before you leave Tekek, ask your driver to stop at the ATM (you will need cash in Juara) or better yet, load up in Mersing. Also ask him to stop at the grocery store to load up on fresh fruit, bread, milk, instant noodles etc. (Plan ahead, make a list of what you like, and assume you will not be able to purchase it in Juara.) If you like a drink or two, ask him to stop at the duty free liquor store too. (Its next to the grocery store). I don’t think you can buy booze in Juara, although I did see beer advertised in the Chinese restaurant. Juara is a very quiet get away during the off (monsoon) season, and I can’t imagine that it could be incredibly crazy during the summer. Also zunächst mal das Positive, die Kommunikation bezüglich Abholung in Tekek sowie Infos zur Weiterreise von Tioman klappten per Whatsapp sehr gut, ebenso wie die Fahrt zur Hütte und nach 6 Tagen wieder zum Anleger.||||Die Hütte liegt nicht, wie in den Buchungsportalen und anderen Kartenwerken angegeben links, wenn man auf der Straße von Tekek kommt sondern rechts. Wäre grundsätzlich egal bedeutet jedoch, dass die Hauptstraße unmittelbar hinter den Hütten verläuft (hier ca 80% der Hütten und des Dorfes. Gefühlt alle Minute ein Auto oder Moped mit schlechtem Auspuff immer nach dem Motto, ich kann zwar nicht weit fahren, dafür aber oft. Von 23 bis 6:30 wurde es dann etwas ruhiger. Für uns war die dargestellte Lage in den Portalen Buchungskriterium gewesen. Ein Schelm wer Böses dabei denkt.||Entgegen der Beschreibung bei Booking.com gab es kein eigenes Restaurant. Auch von Servicepersonal war nichts zu sehen. Wasser und Pulverkaffee wurden nicht nachgefüllt (konnte man aber im Inselaldi kaufen). Eine Kontaktaufnahme scheiterte an der nur sekundenweise vorhandenen Internetverbindung. Wie wir später herausfanden, war es zur gleichen Zeit in anderen Strandcafes durchaus möglich eine Verbindung zu bekommen. ||Wir haben keine Ahnung, wie die sehr positiven Bewertungen zustande gekommen sind. Natürlich war Ramadan und da nimmt man Abstriche in Kauf. Die Restaurants der anderen Resorts jedoch waren geöffnet.||Wenn auch die Lage der Hütte hinten zu wünschen übrig ließ, so wurde man vorne durch die direkte Lage am Strand entschädigt. Lediglich die Sandfliegen waren ein großes Problem, aber das betrifft ja alle Behausungen auf Tioman. ||Wir hatten die Hütte 6 Nächte gebucht, Handtücher oder Bettwäsche wurde nicht gewechselt. Der gute alte Jugendherbergsschlafsack war hier sinnvoll und auch die mitgebrachten Handtücher. Käfer gab es bei uns keine, jedoch das Pärchen aus der Nachbarhütte klagte über vieeeeele Kakerlaken.||||Unsere Hütte lag unmittelbar neben einem Wohnhaus. Bedeutete Licht und Lärm. Da unsere Behausung keine Vorhänge hatte, nervte das Abends doch schon. Morgens ab 7 schien dann die Sonne herein, so dass an Schlaf nicht mehr zu denken war.||Wie die Bewertung von 8.6 bei Booking zustande kommt, kann man nur ahnen. Von uns gibt's wegen der Lage und der guten Matratze eine 4,0. ||Von Permai selber wurden keine Aktivitäten angeboten (Sorry we are Closed), jedoch in der Nachbarschaft wurde Tauchen, Surfen und Paddeln vermittelt.||Ach ja, vergessen darf man nicht die Tauchschule Tiongman, welche etwas südlich unserer Hütte lag. Hier lag das Boot manchmal eine Stunde mit laufendem Motor im Wasser und die Benzindüfte zogen genau zu uns, so dass ein Aufenthalt am Strand unmöglich war. Eine Bitte, dies zu unterlassen wurde mit der Antwort, man habe ja schließlich Gäste, kopfschüttelnd und grinsend abgetan (aber sich dann "Respect the ocean" auf die Fahne zu schreiben, haha). Soviel zum Thema Marine Nationalpark. Dafür kann Permai nichts, jemanden zum ansprechen diesbezüglich gab es jedoch bei Permai...

Very friendly staff and too bad that the power went off all the time, during our stay. The nights were hot, due to the fact that the airconditioning wasn't able to do its job while the power was off. However, the owner couldn't do much about that of course. The owner was not easy to reach at the office. So, we had to find a number online in order to get in contact with them through Whatsapp. This was fine, but maybe provide your guests a number upon arrival.

Location is just perfect and idyllic. The chalet itself was just fine, but certainly not as clean as I expected from the reviews that I read. I was especially in shock when I saw the pillow underneath the sheet on our last day. They were soooo grose and molty, as you can see on the picture.

Would I recommend this place? Yes! But to the owner the question: please replace the pillows ASAP and I didn't dare to look at the mattresses! Maybe, check...
