One88 On Commerce, Whakatane, New Zealand — Hotel in North Island

The place represents the best of the best for accommodation in Whakatane.

The location is perfect, situated on Whakatanes main drag. Only a moments walk to McDonalds, and only a few moments more to Woolworths Supermarket. Only 10mins drive to Whakatane Airport.

Heaps of onsite parking, including directly outside the downstairs units. Makes unloading and reloading the car a breeze.

Checked In by a very friendly gentleman who was very forthcoming with directions and Restaurant recommendations. He walked me over to room, located on the second level. I was led into a beautifully presented 1 Bedroom Apartment. The lounge is massive, with comfortable seating and a massive Telly with all the Sky TV channels. The Kitchenette is also of decent sized, and very well equipped. You would definitely be able to cook a decent meal. Milk was fresh, and in a glass jar - no UHT rubbish here. Also several packets of biscuits in the well stocked Tea/Coffee Caddy.

The bedroom is also large, with massive panoramic windows letting in lots of natural light. The Bed was very comfortable, with clean, crisp and good quality linens.

The bathroom comes off the Bedroom, and again, is huge and well equipped. Lots of good quality Soaps and Shampoos.

There is an Air Conditioner in the Lounge, and also a Ceiling Fan in the bedroom which helps with the blazing hot Whakatane summer days.

Despite both sides of the properly straddling two of the busiest roads in Whakatane, the rooms are all double glazed, and at no time did the road noise bother me. And despite the property being fully booked, there was also no noise from outside or from other rooms.

To all Kiwis and visitors to NZ, please be aware the motel doesn’t accept debit / visa cards although your booking through other booking engines would proceed but the motel would surprise you in an onward communication that they need a credit card before arrival or upon arrival and if you are unable to produce one, good luck - sleep in your car. The ONLY motel so far in NZ with this ridiculous requirement as if debit cards mean nothing to them. Worth noting that I stayed in the motel several times but they failed to recognise. Thumbs down

Below reply is out of the context. The motel never advised and never mentioned there was an option to pay in full in advance which I would have happily paid.

I booked the motel through Air New Zealand (Expedia) Just ONCE against what has been claimed that I made multiple bookings after multiple cancellations by the motel - it’s incorrect. But yes there was email communication and a call which I made to clarify and was told I must have a credit card. By the time booking was already processed.

I have stayed here before several times and my last booking was for the dates from 30 May 2022 to 01 June 2022 which I had to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances. This booking was made using exactly the same Visa Debit Card and the booking was accepted.

My last stay at this very motel for four nights was in 2021 and attached is the receipt.

ONE88 On Commerce exceed all our expeditions.|It started from our first contact when we phoned to make our reservation, Malcolm was very obliging to meet our special requests E.G. Being disabled our request was for a ground level 1 bedroom unit with walk-in shower with shower seat. Malcolm then asked if we wished a super king bed or two super king singles.|Instant confirmation by e-mail was in our inbox before we even hung up the phone.|At the time of checking in a welcome smile was appreciated. Malcolm then showed us to our unit and took time to show us how to work the TV and heat pump, WI-FI etc.|The unit was spotlessly clean, spacious rooms and quiet with everything to make our stay perfect, even asking if we wished full milk or light milk. |The bed, pillows and sheets would be one of the best we have slept in and that is comparing it with some of the world’s best accommodation.|Bathrooms are an important part of our stay, fabulous shower, luxury towels, large selection of complimentary NZ toiletries.| Working in the travel industry for some 33 years I am very demanding and critical when it comes to accommodation, Liz and Malcolm’s eye for detail meet all my expectations.|There is so much more I could say but do not wish to take away your surprise at the time you check-in and experience what One88 on Commerce has waiting for you. |P.S.
