Franz Josef Montrose — Hotel in South Island

Amazing facility, clean comfortable room. Plenty of parking spaces around the area. Veey close to the glacier walk and close to petrol station etc. Good rest stop for the night.

One thing can be improve is instructions for late check in could be a little more clearer. Also, encounter a rude backpacker staff at the premise. Assumed it was by the way she talk about the property. It was late, dark and we were scrambling to find the building that host our room. We came across the staff of the backpackers at the outside which talk to us with a very unpleasant and condescending tone. Not helpful at all. I hope that staff please improve her customer service relation. Not what I expect to be greeted after a very long...

Negatives: The place felt a little unclean, but to be fair the whole town has a mildue feel to it. Guests don’t keep the kitchen clean and I have been fearful to use any kitchen equipment without first washing it. The beds were uncomfortable - woke up with a stiff neck and back. The top bunks had no rails to stop you from falling off - only increasing the discomfort.

Positives: Free breakfast is always a plus. They have recycling bins for glass and cans. The shower facilities are pretty good. Not a party hostel, the only people that wake you are the ones going on early morning trips and hikes.

Probably my favorite accommodation of my three week tour of the South Island. We were here in the off season, so not many people were around, making or use of the public spaces like the kitchen very comfortable. The double bedroom with en suite was amazing, including a small fridge in the room. The included breakfast and evening soup were things I didn't run into often and made our stay that much nicer. To top it off they have free movie rentals with free popcorn! Wasn't sure we were going to make use of that but it was a blessing on a rainy afternoon. And of course, the staff were super friendly. I would definitely recommend Franz Josef Montrose and hope to stay again...
