The Landing Restaurant & Bar — Restaurant in South Island

A little over a week ago, myself and five friends from Australia found ourselves in Franz Josef - seeking refuge from horrendous rain.

Little did we know at the time, The Landing Restaurant & Bar was just the answer we were looking for.

“A quick beer and maybe a bowl of chips” is what we told ourselves, but little did we know, five hours later we would still be rooted to our seats at the fine establishment that is The Landing.

The service from all staff involved was impeccable, with both the food and drink menus having something for everyone - delighting and pleasing us with each and every round of orders we made.

Over the course of an afternoon which turned into an evening and then a night, we tried almost everything both the food and drink menus had to offer. After all of this sampling, I can safely say, you will be hard-pressed to find a better place to spend a day/afternoon/night, than The Landing Restaurant & Bar Franz Josef.

The owner in particular was super friendly and made himself known to our group, bringing plenty of laughs for all involved.

The Landing was so good that after a few days of reflecting on the amazing service and experience, I decided to never forget it - and now have a tattoo (see attached) to proudly remember what was an amazing evening.

Had high expectations of a restaurant boasting the “speights” name however I was rather disappointed. I ordered the ribeye, thinking surely this will be a serious feed for $38.50. I had expectations on a meal similar to what they would serve at the ale house in Dunedin or wanaka. It was not. The steak was not only about the size of my iPhone 7 but it was also over cooked and cold. So cold that my garlic butter wouldn’t melt. I would of told the wait staff but they never came back to check in on how we were getting on. Heartbroken I asked how my partner was enjoying her meal hoping that she was having a slightly better experience than I was. She ordered the fettuccine and said it was fine. so kudos to them they can cook pasta. Shortly after she took a sip of her drink (vodka orange) and it almost hit the table. I personally have drunk my fair share of vodka oranges and never have i tasted something like that it was if someone and replaced the Vodka with kerosene it was awful. (Make sure you ask for Smirnoff is what I learnt from that experience) the manager said it was a particular brand of vodka but it was not one i would drink willingly. He was good about the whole thing and refunded the drink later on so no harm done.

All in all if your after a good southern pub like feed I’d go look else where as I left disappointed and hungry. With a large hole in my wallet considering what I received in return.

Cozy Ambiance Given the rainy weather, the cozy heaters and welcoming atmosphere were a godsend. We found the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the ambiance while the rain pattered outside.
