I was going to arrive at midnight in Lima and thought that I would just find a place to crash rather than waiting in the airport until my connecting flight to Cusco the next morning. I found Hostel el Caribe on the net and thought "it’s only for a few hours, how bad could it be?" I arranged to be picked up from the airport by the staff and sure enough they were there waiting! Yea! The website boasts that the place is only 5 min, which it was, in a slum. The staff couldn't have been any nicer but when I dragged my luggage up the 4 flights of stairs and entered my room I started to laugh. It was sooo bad. It looked clean enough but it made a Motel 6 look like the Crillon in Paris. Just to verify how rough the towels were I dragged one across my skin and it left visible scratch marks! It advertised hot water 24/7 which it did have, but not enough light to shave by in the morning. There were at least a hundred hairs from previous guest’s nether regions in the shower, and the bathroom mirror had been cleaned with toilet paper so there were zillions of tiny pieces of paper stuck to the mirror.||My room had sliding glass windows that lead onto a balcony that did little muffle the constant sound of traffic and people milling about outside the place. There was floor to ceiling side window facing the streetlight outside that didn't have a shade. For some reason there was a frosted glass window above the door without a shade either so the constant light from the hallway and from the street focused right on my head while trying to sleep.||||There was so much noise from the other "guests" blasting music or TV that I think I may have gotten 30 minutes sleep during the 5 hours that I was there.||||The free internet in the lobby didn't work while I was there.||||If you have a 4 or 5 hour layover, stay at the airport.||||I do have a few pictures of this place...
Read moreI guess my experiences weren't too bad here compared with other reviewers. I had hot water, what I would consider clean linens and towels, a working tv, and I had no issues with the staff. The door seemed at times like it wouldn't lock (It locks by pushing on the lock from the inside). The bathroom is also not a separate room, but a space that is separated by a large screen door and wall. The wifi didn't work from my room. It is a good place for budget travelers, students, and others who do not want to pay a lot of money to wait near the airport. For the price (considering that everything in this area is indeed more expensive than other parts of the country), it's about average, and I might be returning again.||||My only problem was getting a taxi out of the airport itself. The official (and supposedly more safe) cabs charge what can only be described as criminal rates, and despite the fact this hostel is in the province and not technically within the limits of Lima, it is still pricey to get here unless you arrange something with an outside source, like a local taxi company to come wait for you. So, if you plan on visiting the city itself it might be a good idea to cough up the extra soles to get a slightly more expensive place actually in Lima. I saw a guy come in who was arguing with his driver because he actually wanted 60 soles (about $25 USD) for the ride. There are American and European cities that wouldn't have that kind of price for such a short route. With that being said, this is not too bad of an area. There are several convenient stores and restaurants nearby with authentic...
Read moreInitially thought this was a legit place, being one of the 3 hotels that come up first in a search using google = 'lima airport hotels'. ||||First of all, this hotel is only 5minutes away from the airport - beware because the hotel staff will try and make you pay US$7 for a single journey. This is how much we paid to get from the same airport to Miraflores, which is 40minutes away. ||||This hotel is also above a disco, which was still going on and on when we left at 3.30am to catch our flight to Cusco. We were on the 4th floor (no lifts) yet the disco was so loud that it felt as if we were in the room next to it (not sure if the disco is actually on the top floor). ||||The toilet was not flushable and the shower was blocked! There were no curtains, the hotel's verticle 4m signboard was right outside our room so it was bright all night long. The hotel staff were not very friendly at all.||||I would recommend just getting a hotel at the airport rather than booking online before travelling to Peru. You can be 100% sure that there will be a million people waiting at the airport, approaching you with offers. We got a much better double room with a private bathroom for only US$20...
