|My wife and me stayed a short period at the Titicaca Lodge in the course of a travel across south Peru partially off the beaten track to learn about country and people. ||Looking at many comments and pictures of this lodge one statement first: is this a luxury lodge? By Uros measures you are experiencing the utmost of luxury that they do not have (and want either) at all. If you are used to stay at 4 or 5 star luxury places you may be disappointed. But: this measure is absolutely and totally beside the point. ||Apart from making a stay there obviously about you, it's our vacation, make it about the Uros people and their culture. Talk to them, learn from them and understand their lifestyle and ideals. Do they need money (and hence tourism) to survive: today absolutely and unfortunately yes. But do they need it for their culture? Not really. Their understanding of nature and living with and in it is beyond what money can by and is deeply admirable in a world where humans literally sell anything and destroy their own habitat along with it.... for money. Their values and life is mostly lost in civilizations today apart from fewer small tribes across the world all of wich are endangered. ||So: our stay was amazing in every such way, in addition the scenery, peace, silence, clean air and hard to beat night skies, very good food and naturally friendly humble service. Having the privilege to be surrounded by only approx 2500 of these humble and wonderful people today trying to keep their livestyle and culture up was an experience that is exactly what we wanted it to be: sustainable supportive and Eco friendly tourism and help keep such culture alive and only take away the lesson learned for your own life from it (and the garbage please 😉).||They fully deserve all the recognition and rewards they received. Read moreWe have travelled to a lot of amazing lodges and hotels in the world and Julio’s lodge is one of the few places where I feel a 10/10 rating doesn’t give it enough justice.
You stay on Julio and his wife’s floating reef island which Julio has been building for 18+ years (although the lodge only opened in 2018/19). The rooms are amazing - with panoramic views of the lake and reeds. Big comfy beds, hot showers, toilets, and great furnishings. The floating island is also situated further away from the majority of the other floating islands/lodges in the main Uros community - which means Julio’s island has unimpeded views and is very quiet and peaceful. What is most impressive is that these amazing rooms are literally built on a living floating reed island that needs constant maintenance. Quite mind blowing when you see it.
Julio’s wife cooks very tasty food for you 3 times per day, and Julio will help arrange any tours or travel for you.
We visited in April 2023 and there were no signs of civil unrest in Peru and in our opinion is totally safe to travel. When we visited Juliaca airport was still closed, and the trains from Cusco to Puno were sometimes cancelled. We made the long bus journey from Cusco and were very happy we did (you could also fly to Arequipa and travel up to Puno that way).
We stayed for 3 nights in the Titicaca Panoramic Suite and were very sad to leave. Would very strongly recommend visiting and making the effort to travel over even if Juliaca...
Read moreStaying at a floating island was my dream for many years. And my dream became a reality this summer, when my family and I stayed at Titicaca Lodge. Pickup from the bus and boat ride to the lodge was arranged by our host and everyone was well organized . From the moment we arrived, it was clear this lodge was something special! It was recommended to my family by friends who stayed there previously, we went with their recommendations and had an amazing time! Truly unique and breathtaking location, the atmosphere was serene, authentic, but also luxurious. Every detail was thought through, lodge was beautifully decorated and very comfortable. We stayed in two rooms, and both rooms were wonderful! Breakfasts and dinners were delicious.|But what truly set this experience apart, was our host Julio and his wife! Not only was he incredibly hospitable, but he consistently went above and beyond to make our stay unforgettable. He helped us with arrangements for one of the island on the lake (without his involvement we would have been out of luck). |What impressed us the most was his role as an ambassador for his community. He drove us around the island in his boat, sharing stories, history, introducing to other families. Something we would never discover on our own. This wasn’t just a place to stay - it was an experience learning about the lake, floating islands and wonderful local people that live and maintain this unique place daily. Truly enriching...
