If you are wanting to visit Lake Titicaca and the Uros people, Amalia Lodge is the place to stay. Juan Carlos, Amalia and their family have created a truly unique experience, combining a luxury boutique lodge with a rich cultural experience and they couldn’t have got the balance any better.
Amalia Lodge is situated a 5 minute boat ride from the main Uros community, which gives it a sense of privacy and luxury. The moment you pull up to their island, you can tell that the quality surpasses the other lodges that you have travelled past on the way out. As you step onto the island you will certainly know that you have made the right choice as Juan Carlos, Amalia and their 3 children Andres, Alisandra and Andes welcome you with huge smiles while dressed in their traditional Uros clothing.
You’ll instantly notice the floor to ceiling panoramic windows at each end of both their lodges while getting a glimpse of the very stylish yet traditional decor inside (no more to say here, the pictures speak for themselves). You’d expect been on a floating island the amenities would be limited, however you have a constantly supply of hot water and electricity. As you might also expect, due to the high altitude the evenings can be very chilly, however there is a gas heater in the room and the duvet covers on the huge bed are the most comfortable I have ever experienced.
As the service Juan Carlos and Amalia provide is all inclusive you will receive 3 meals throughout the day. With a fruit selection, breads and eggs for breakfast, fish for lunch and meat for dinner. All of which are freshly prepared and taste fantastic!
The immersion in the Uros culture is truly phenomenal. Learning from Juan Carlos and Amalia how the Uros people go about there everyday lives is touching. Finding out about the many uses of the reeds, from how they use it to build islands and houses, to its medicinal uses. Spending an afternoon crafting using the same reeds. Visiting the Uros community and more of Juan Carlos and Amalia’s family. Spending time just speaking with the family and playing with the kids to learn about their culture and way of life.
I would recommend spending an absolute minimum of 2 nights at Amalia Lodge. We had stayed for 3 nights and wished that we had another night.
This isn’t just a lodge, it’s an immersive experience and one that we will cherish for the rest...
Read moreAn absolutely amazing experience staying at the lodge and I can’t recommend it enough. Please do not let the ongoing political situation in Peru / Puno put you off visiting. ||I visited in March - at this time there were ‘protests’ in Puno, however these protests were very peaceful and did not impact our visit to the Uros Islands and Amalia’s lodge. There were also busses available to/from Cusco and Arequipa, as well as boats & busses to/from Copacabana in Bolivia, meaning it’s very easy to get to Puno and the Uros Islands/Amalia’s lodge. ||The stay at Amalia’s lodge was fantastic and we loved meeting Amalia, her husband Juan (who spoke perfect English) and their lovely children. They treated us exactly like family and really looked after us and made us feel welcome, as well as giving us the time and space to relax and enjoy the beautiful room, outdoor space and incredible scenery. ||During our time the family took us on a tour of the islands and told us about the history of the area and how the islands were built, and we also helped cast the nets out to do some fishing, as well as doing some crafts!||The food was also excellent - breakfast was provided each day along with a delicious 3 course meal at lunch and dinner time. ||Originally we had booked for two nights but cancelled our onwards bus to Cusco and extended our stay because we loved it so much here !||This was one of the best experiences I’ve had in South America. I cannot thank Juan, Amalia & Family enough for being so nice, welcoming and caring - it was so sad to...
