I really enjoyed my one week stay at this location. I was shocked and somewhat in disbelief that there was a strongly negative review from 2009 because my experience was fantastic. Iwas personally driven by the owner and his daughter for a competitive price (We called a taxi and he agreed to drive us for R50 less). The room I stayed in was a family room with a full sized bed and a small room with two twin beds. Our room was cleaned so well that we jokingly said we felt that we'd been robbed everyday. The price R 550 ($73) was fantastic and with 4 people sleeping comfortably, this was a STEAL. The location was great--8 minute walk to the beach--and on a beautiful corner adjacent to shopping. The service was great--the staff were friendly and the food service was extremely accommodating. Unlike most places in South Africa where the kitchen closes at 6 or 7pm, food room service was available 24 hours a day. As we were here to do community service and were working long hours, this was a true blessing. The room had free WIFI which is hard to find in the US, let alone when traveling abroad. The continental breakfast was great and the hot breakfast which was included was extremely flexible and was a great way to start the day. The hotel doesn't have a fitness area, but there are 5 floors, so I ran the stairs each morning and did calisthenics in the hallway while watching the...
Read moreFirst time to stay here; facilitating training. Centrally located hotel. First, I would like to commend staff on all levels for their above-excellent customer service and care. Secondly, my room on the 4th floor was comfortable, very clean and spacious. I appreciated having a fridge in my room; also a kettle - hair dryer on request. Further, restaurant on site for room service in the evenings that you do not want to go out and very cold beers downstairs in the bar; I was especially impressed with the salad and Tartare sauce that accompanied the baked fish I ordered for room service - pity the fish was dry. But my sirloin steak the previous evening was great. Regarding the training rooms: there are 2 venues that I know of to choose from on first floor. The one we used does not have natural light, but is a good size with some wall space. Had a good atmosphere. Bathrooms on site VERY intimately located .... Other room is bigger with balcony, but located on the street; more noisy - remember, you are in the middle of a city. Lunches served were good and the break teas and snacks were always on hand and excellent (served in the training venue). Reception arranges transfers and will gladly assist with anything. I will definitely be back....
Read moreGoing to Durban very often - Robbed in 2010 in another upper class grand hotel whilst sleeping, attempted hijack May 2014. Stayed in Olwandle in 2012 and decided to return 2014 because of the save, friendly environment, friendly helpfull staff, up-to date with your reservation. Stayed for a week, and the last evening at dinner the staff even came to greet me goodbye as they won't see me again before I leave. Believe me, I did not chatter about my where-abouts, they were informed and updated. Breakfast and dinner - not a wide range to choose, however prepared with love. Walking distance from the ICC, therefore could park my car on arrival and leave a week later without having to drive anywhere during the week (remember the attempted hijack in the upperclass area in May!) Could walk to the "Workshop Mall", shopping and within a few minutes back in my spacious, friendly, clean room. Battled to connect to my server, but with the free Wi-Fi, what a pleasure! In future, the only place...
