On a trip to the Rioja Alavesa, we couldn’t get affordable accommodation in Laguardia (Álava, Basque Country), so we chose this reasonably-priced four-star (nominally at least) hotel in Cenicero (Logroño, Rioja). The location didn’t seem promising (the town’s name can be translated as “ashtray”) but we were pleasantly surprised to find it was a short walk from several top wineries, including Marqués de Cáceres, and near several bars frequented by locals, families included, with excellent, cheap Rioja wine. Read moreFabulous room at a great price and a nice buffet breakfast for 8 euros each. Really good as well for its safe underground parking. Very close to the old town for a walk-around and there are major bodegas nearby. Only lost a star as there is no restaurant. You can order food from a basic menu as room service if you want. The hotel is close enough to various tapas bars which we used for our dinner accompanied by the lovely local wines which were only 1 or 2 euros a glass. Much better than room service!

Read moreTravelling as a couple with a dog, this hotel was an ideal stopover in the way to Bilbao. ||Set in a traditional Riojan town, with working wine making facilities, we had a lovely stopover. ||The locals were also very friendly. ||The rooms was large, functional and modern. We visited during the heatwave and an air conditioning unit had been left in the room, venting through the open balcony door, which was safe however the passing traffic was noisy. ||Used the secure parking which was reassuring. ||We’d love to revisit and spend more time in the area...
