I stayed and toured other surf camps and this Ocean Tribe provides the best value for your money in all of Weligama and Ahangama if you are a surfing digital nomad. The fact that half the guests are return visitors, some of whom opt to stay for a month or more attests to the quality of the community, service, and accommodations. ||||The staff and community are what really set this place apart from all others. Milan, the owner, and his gf, Becky, are resourceful, friendly, and will help make your trip smooth as a full-service concierge by coordinating transportation, ding repairs, medical aid, visa extensions, police station visits, birthday celebrations, etc. The staff of locals and family members make you feel like part of their family and attract a network of kind, fun guests from all over the world united by a love for surfing and/or tropical paradises.||||Most guests are in their 30s and 40s - solos and couples. Many work remotely and care more about surfing than drinking. If you're looking for a younger, harder drinking crowd that doesn't wake up for early morning surf sessions, Ocean Tribe runs visits to The Surfer surf camp owned by Milan's brother. There are also weekly dinner outings to various restaurants because the Ocean Tribe kitchen closes on Saturdays after breakfast. ||||Milan is the head surf instructor/guide at Ocean Tribe and he started me on my journey to shortboarding. I love his silly sense of humor and positive attitude. I had so much surfing with him - he's the best surf buddy ever, always trying to cheer people up. He is also a hero - he rescued two people (including me) in one day while out surfing! ||||The surf school's quiver of boards is the best I've seen in all of Weligama. They maintain the boards and only rent them to guests of the surf school. They're not all beat up like the ones you see being rented out on the beach. ||||For complete beginners new to surfing, Ocean Tribe works together with Blue Wave surf school to get you started. Because of this partnership, the staff at Blue Wave becomes familiar to you and you can trust them to watch your stuff while you go surfing. You can also stay and chill on their beachfront sunbeds.||||The student-teacher ratio is a max of two students per instructor, which allows for more time and attention per student. Other surf schools, like Kima, do more like 8 students per instructor, which doesn't really help you progress as much because you're waiting in line for instruction or feedback.||||The rooms at Ocean Tribe are new (I was only the 5th or 6th person to stay in my room). The water pressure is strong, the water heater is adjustable and can get really hot if you want it to, the beds are big and firm, and the wifi is decent if you are near the bar (if not, you can ask for a router or extender moved closer to your room). All the rooms have balconies or porches. The deluxe double room is spacious and comes with a closet, a drying rack, and a desk.||||The location is set back a few hundred feet from the road so it is quiet most nights except when the neighbors are partying or shooting off fireworks. ||||The onsite cafe/bar serves up yummy smoothie bowls for breakfast. The asian style stir fry and the grilled tuna steaks were my favorite dishes, although portions were very small for my big american stomach. I also really like their fudgy, thin brownies a la mode and the occasional chocolate mousse made by Becky is seriously the best in the world! The quesadilla was meh... There's hardly any queso in the quesadilla, but Sri Lanka is pretty darn far from Mexico. Cut them some slack for not knowing what a real quesadilla tastes like.||||Oh, and do you like dogs? There are 4 of them here. They mostly keep to themselves and don't bite. They might snuggle up to you and fart on your head while you're napping though. LMAO. Somebody must be picking up after them because I never saw poop on the grass in the courtyard.||||TLDR; I definitely recommend staying here and taking their surf camp package - it is the best price to value ratio...
