Design of rooms is architecturally interesting and nice, but many of the details are outdated (yellowed telephones with wires sticking out of the walls in the bathroom, showers that dont drain at a rate that matches the water pressure). Service was not the best I've ever had, don't expect a Marriott experience if you're used to having loyalty status. Small things that go according to plan are great (like breakfast service, airport pickup), but I felt like I didnt get much from my Platinum status - they seemed confused that I was entitled to a 4pm check out, and also I wasnt given a choice of a welcome gift (there was a fruit platter in my room on arrival - so maybe they made the choice for me). This piece of feedback isn't applicable to 99% of guests, but I selected a Marriott for my stay in Dar es Salaam due to my loyalty status, and I'm not sure that was the right move.
Again, very cute rooms. Comfortably firm beds, like in much of Tanzania. Air conditioning worked well (and the loudness helped drown out noise in the courtyard, of which there was a lot). Staff was very friendly. Nothing wowed me or went above and beyond though, so I would have trouble giving it a 5 star review.
Also, one last petty complaint I have is that you get charged per occupancy. I usually dont worry about that field when I'm browsing hotels on the Marriott Bonvoy app, and so it's easy to forget. I had reserved 2 separate stays at this hotel mistakenly with 1 person instead of 2. They charge an extra $30 per night per person, which I think is kinda silly because what is the charge for? Water usage? Breakfast (which def isnt worth $30)? Anyways, petty complaint, I just think it's kinda annoying and the $30 is not commensurate with the expense to the hotel for hosting that person, its just a money grab. I witnessed multiple other people be caught off guard by this charge...
Read moreEverything about Protea is awesome . Exceeded all my expectations. Now our preferred property to send clients in Dar. I can't wait to return in February with some clients to share some Savannahs and Samosas poolside. Sami and staff truly go above and beyond to ensure safety, comfort and a hospitable experience. This property was so great I already returned at least 3 times. It served as my air conditoned , awesome restaurant oasis and workspace after spending weeks at a time on remote islands in the Zanzibar archipelago. It was always a relief to come and stay, recharge at Protea for a couple days before resuming my marine safari journey and diving adventures. I'll have to return to leave more reviews about each specific time I stayed because each time Mr. Sami once again pulled a rabbit out of the hat and saved the day . Didn't expect such 1st class concierge service and breakfasts. Wow. Asante Sana for everything, for always having affordable car service timely and available on call for me. Very important as a solo female traveler that I feel taken care of and safe. Protea impressed me from arrival at the airport to 3 months later...
Read moreOur recent stay at the Protea Hotel Oyster Bay and the Courtyard Dar es Salaam was exceptional. The courtyard is a stately property with old Victorian charm blended into a local architecture making it a unique beauty. The hotel has an actual courtyard and is unlike any other courtyard properties across the Marriott Stable.||Both properties are impeccably maintained and offered top-notch service. As a Titanium Bonvoy I was thoroughly pampered experiencing one of the best hotel stays among the over 1,000 nights I've spent at just Marriott properties globally.||We were fortunate to meet the Group General Manager Mr. Dinish who shared fascinating stories about Tanzania and provided invaluable guidance on safaris, local food and activities for our daughters. The hospitality and dining at each of their restaurants were outstanding. We will definitely be returning to enjoy this remarkable experience again....
