DO NOT BOOK THE 2-PERSON BEDROOM, you will not sleep. We visited in August 2023.

The room window is openning directly on multiple AC systems (of other buildings, not any of those will fresh down your room) that are placed just a couple of meters away. During our stay, the ACs were always on, making a terrible noise and making the bed vibrate.

To get an idea of what I mean, you can check the uploaded video which was taken in the middle of the night.

In addition, in August it was very hot and with no AC inside our building, the temperature of the room was over 30°C when we arrived at around 11pm.

We stayed only the first night. We did not sleep at all. In the morning we gave back the room keys and said to the hostel manager we will go elsewhere since it is not possible to sleep here. Hostel manager refused to acknowledge that the ACs were noisy, and he was blaming the bar/night clubs down the street. He kept saying that nothing was his responsability. This was absolutely ridiculous. Such a room should simply not be rented when ACs are used. Even for free I would not stay a night.

Also, the room is very small (you have only 1m of space aside the bed, you can be 2 persons standing but definitely not move at all). It obviously does not matter if you are not planning on spending time in the room/you're travelling on a budget, but note that you will need the window open otherwise the volume is so small that you are suffocating (oh and keeping the window closed to reduce ACs noise is useless as the windows are old woden frames without any insulation).

Bathrooms are not the cleanest and there is a lot of humidity and smell, but it's just as what can be expected from a cheap hostel, so we personally...

Incredibly unfriendly, unhelpful, and borderline rude staff. Not a single smile from them for the length of my stay, 3 nights. 100 TL charge for any late check-in after 12:00 AM. I told the staff the arrival of my plane, and they emailed three times to ask what time I would arrive and that I would be charged extra for arriving late. Thankfully I was able to check-in before 12:00 AM and not have to pay extra. The facility is extremely dirty and run down, there are no lockers for storage and their excuse is that it creates a false sense of security. We are asked to take off our outdoor shoes at the entrance which is completely understandable however, I always carry a pair of indoor slippers. Each staff would tell me that we cannot walk around in outdoor footwear and every time I had to repeat myself that they were strictly indoor slippers. There is a kitchen but, we cannot cook meat only vegetarian food. Therefore, I did not utilize it. I really don’t understand how this place has so many good reviews. You can have the best facilities but if the customer service is not on point, then it will just make your experience horrible and vice-versa. Overall, I would avoid this hostel when...

This hostel shocked me with how badly they handle guest safety.

A young woman staying here cut her trip short and checked out early because a man was bothering her and making her feel unsafe. She reported him to the staff, but instead of taking action immediately, they allowed him to stay as if nothing happened.

Meanwhile, I spoke calmly to this man to understand what had happened, since I knew the girl personally and was concerned. I didn’t fight, I didn’t cause a scene — I simply asked questions. The manager then found out and, unbelievably, kicked me out of the hostel and banned me from returning. They punished the wrong person while protecting the one who made a guest leave in fear.

This is not just unfair — it’s dangerous. A hostel that ignores harassment and then silences the people who care about safety is not a place where travelers can feel protected.

If you value your safety and respect as a guest, avoid...

I only planned to stay in Izmir for a short time, but after two days at Shantihome I felt so much AT HOME that I didn't want to leave. The hostel is colorful and comfortable with a tremendous atmosphere and the staff couldn't be nicer. Guests are invited to share in their delicious homecooked meals. Their hospitality is real and amazing. If you're visiting Izmir, Shantihome is a must. P.S. Don't miss the bakeries on the corner. Try the nearest one for their chocolate boyos - balls of flaky pastry and chocolate, and right across from it try the blue and white bakery for their simit and grilled cheese and tomato sandwich.

I stayed at this hostel for two nights on my way from the south to Istanbul. Everything was fine and their breakfast was delicious (I was unhappy to have miss it on the second day). At night the place gets pretty loud as it’s located in the heart of Izmir. Beds are comfortable and it’s clean. Some elements at the hostel look like they have not been renovated in ages. Doors and windows look like at my grandpas house and he did not repaint them in probably around 25 years 😂 my room was also dark with little day light
