So, having never been to Odessa, and not being familiar with the area, I looked at a number of properties. In the end, a combination of price and location led me to choose the Olimp. First of all, have to point out that it is a little distance from the city centre (didn't realise how large Odessa was that big!). I arrived at the centre after taking the overnight sleeper from Kiev (very cheap, comfortable and highly recommended). Having left my luggage at the station, I decided to try to find the hotel. The walk was much longer than I'd anticipated, and took me a good 45mins. During my walk I was aware of trams running up and down Frantsuz'ky Blvd and discovered that the no 5 tram does in fact run from just across from the station (in front of McDonald's, you can't miss it), stopping just around the corner from the hotel. The cost is just 3hrv + another 3 if you have a suitcase. The trams run from around 6 am to about 11pm. You can, alternatively, take a taxi. As to the hotel itself. It's located just off the main road just where the blvd makes a right turn bend. I was a little concerned initially as directly above the property is a big high-rise currently being renovated, and it looked as if it might be a noisy stay. However, no problems, no real noise. The staff were all very helpful and really friendly, with most of them speaking very good English. The rooms were quite a shock (in a good way). Not only were they exactly as shown in the photos (a refreshing change), but they are without doubt, the largest rooms I've ever been in, both the bedroom and the bathroom. You could probably fit 4 people easily, and still not bump into each other. The bed was massive and very comfortable. The décor was (as the photos show) very traditional (sort of regency, lots of stripes). There was aircon, a room safe (extra charge) and fridge. All in all, a very comfortable spacious room. I didn't try the adjoining restaurant, but it always seemed busy and popular with locals. Also didn't try the optional breakfast (also served in this adjoining restaurant), but it seemed quite reasonable at 75hrv (about 2.5 euro). The hotel is about 15 mins walk down to the beaches, and about the same in opposite direction to Arcadia Beach area. Considering that the cost was around 25e per night, it was brilliant value for money and I'd have no hesitation in going there again. My only complaints would be that there are no English-speaking news channels on the tv (though I've found this to be similar in most hotels in Ukraine), plus the lack of tea/coffee making facilities you'd normally find in most European hotels of 3* and up (again, seems to be a similar situation in general in Ukraine). My very best wishes and thanks to the girls and Max...
Read moreAverage hotel in dated decor, good location away from the main Arcadia throng (5 mins by Uber to there for about $1). Close but not too close. It's unpleasantly noisy and air polluted near Arkadia, so it was nice to be able to return somewhere peaceful and cleaner. ||Whilst the hotel itself was dated and a bit tired, early 2000s decor probably, it was set in the most beautiful grounds of a garden restaurant, easily one of the best in Odessa. The food was excellent, likewise the staff and service. The menu was Armenian I think, or similar. Freshly cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner at reasonable prices. An absolute delight, and a beautiful place to sit. ||There was an enormous derelict hotel towerblock undergoing renovation & situated next to the site, which was a eyesore and often various distant grinding and banging throughout the day, but not obtrusive or bothersome. For this reason, the actual address to the hotel was a closed off building site, thus the minicab driver took a while to find the other entrance (on a different road).||Hotel was comfortable and clean though. The room had an enormous balcony, overlooking the stunning restaurant below, which was beautifully illuminated at night, and was often able to listen to the singers below. Beautiful sound. Value was average, although I was unexpectedly charged full price after previously extending for a few days, I booked at a discount and assumed the price would continue. This was a bit of a stinger and the girl at reception adamantly argued the point and refused to negotiate the price down when I found out (on paying the bill). This kinda soured an otherwise pleasant stay. ||Reception all spoke good English and we're otherwise professional and helpful. ||I've stayed all over Odessa and would definitely recommend this place, mainly due to the restaurant and peaceful...
Read moreHelpful staff. The rooms are very big (I think all of them are the same) and plush with old style wall paper, carpets and kettle. The safe in the wardrobe was not apparently useable - I read somewhere on another review I would have had to pay for using it, but I didn't ask.||||The area is quiet. There is a building site not far away but we didn't hear anything from it.||||Only slight minus is that the hotel is rather out of the way. There are trams quite often to the centre but you may well have to change tram for some routes, making it a long journey. With a taxi it took about 10-15 mins. and cost between 100 and 200 grivna (c.€4,50), depending on the driver and your negotiating technique. On the other hand, it is only 5-10 min. tram ride from the Arkadia beach, which was fun. The trams are very cheap in Odessa.||||Breakfast was excellent, though a little slow in coming. They only opened for breakfast at 9am, but we were there off-season. In high season they might...
