We recently paid our first visit to the Isle of Bute to meet up with friends who live on the island. We had booked to stay at the Highlander B&B as it looked a nice place and was located a short walk from Rothesay ferry terminal. Upon arrival, the owner Gus, greeted us and showed us to our room. He then asked if we would like a tea or coffee in the lounge. So, we went down to the lounge and Gus told us many things about the island and a bit about himself and his wife Sherry. We then went back to our room, no 6 (Glenfinnan), which was spacious having a large bed with great pillows and an impressive sea view. Daily sweet treats were left in the room, which also had a small fridge for milk and home made wine. There was also a coffee machine, and bottled water. The shower/toilet was a good size with a rain shower and lots of things you may need for your stay. Breakfast for the following day was ordered each night, from a great menu offering Traditional Scottish Breakfast, salmon, scrambled eggs and a cold buffet of cereals, fruit and yoghurts, and of course coffee/tea and toast. We tried various items during our stay and all of it was fantastic - top quality food and presentation! Gus was always very accommodating and introduced guests to each other at breakfast, which we liked and so we had some interesting conversations with other visitors. Overall, The Highlander B&B is a fantastic place to stay and is just a short walk into the main part of Rothesay. It is run by great hosts, who make everyone feel at home and who ensure that guests have what they need to make their stay very enjoyable. They are very knowledgeable about the island and are keen to share this with their guests, offering suggestions of places to visit during a stay on Bute. We will definitely be...
Read moreThis B&B is owned by a lovely couple. The owner; Gus, gives you warm welcome and you will instantly feel like home. Their hospitality is just incredibly amazing. They give you a brief information of the island with showing map of the island when you check in, so you can ask any questions you have about your plans on the island then. They cook fresh breakfast. For our stay, they had full Scottish breakfast or smoked salmon with corrosion which has very nice and fluffy scrambled egg sanded. Both were very delicious. The portion of full Scottish breakfast is quite large, so you can be fully prepared before your long and active day.
We stayed in a room with ocean view. This B&B is located by the ocean, so you can see this beautiful highland and ocean view. It makes you feel you are properly on your holiday and completely forget about your busy life. It only takes 10-15mins walk from the ferry port and I found it is a good amount of walk feeling nice ocean breeze.
This B&B is immaculate and tastefully decorated. They clean the room very tidy and spotless. Shower room has shampoo and conditioner, if I remember correctly. Bed is big enough for two adults, comfortable and not squeaky. It has Smart TV so you can watch Netflix on it. Bathroom has makeup remove wipe, toothbrush with toothpaste, hand wash and hair dryer. The room has a nice little table and chairs by TV. It has a small fridge which can have a couple...
Read moreOur first time on the Isle of Bute and first time back in Scotland after 20 years did not disappoint as we were given a warm welcome to Rothesay and Highlander House by Gus and Sherry. They were very thoughtful in accommodating us in their downstairs room, Smoo, with its king-size bed, luxurious finishes, and breathtaking view of the bay. The modern bathroom was well stocked with thoughtful items in case guests had forgotten anything. Gus and Sherry's in-depth knowledge of the island led us to explore the quaint little town and then further afield where we saw playful seals, delightful Highlander coos, and even a couple having their wedding photos done. Highlander House is warm, inviting, and beautifully decorated, furnished with interesting items from the hosts' global travels. Our hosts gave us our first-ever taste of a full Scottish breakfast which was quite unlike an English breakfast in that it had haggis, black pudding, and square sausage among the other usual breakfast items. This was beautifully presented as a taster platter. Our curiosity turned to delight and we were very well impressed with the offerings and portion sizes. Another treat was the Scottish salmon bagel, with the salmon fished locally. Sadly, our time on the island ended far too soon and we can't wait to return to explore more and enjoy the hospitality we received at...
