Couldnt find anything attractive about this place at all. It has been a miserable, real old school, drinking mans howff for the 50 years, I've been going to Rothesay. Its not alone. The town has several such like establishments the island is famous for its scenic beauty but when it comes to hospitality and entertainment there is everything to be desired. The " Doon the Water" heydays are long gone. There is little in the way of good evening entertainment to attract the holidaymaker.😱🙄

When a dirty big seagull had a poo all over my hubby, myself and my daughter, the lovely bar lady got me a soapy cloth to clean myself off with as washing in the sink was awkward due to my daughter being asleep in the carrier on my chest. Bar staff were super friendly and helpful and the bar was lovely and quaint. Prices were cheap too! £7.50 for a Belhaven pint, a regular rosé and a Froot Shoot.

We popped in for food, but there were no tables (book in advance), so we stopped for a beer in the bar area. The food that kept going past looked good, fresh traditional pub food. Staff are friendly and the pub is bustling.

Food was the only good thing! Service absolutely disgusting! Children licensed till 8, but they physically have to be eating for you to stay. Was with family and had ordered a round along with multiple plates of food for us. That was fine. Plates were thrown down, then snatched back as soon as we finished. In fact snatched is an understatement. Hadn't even finished eating! Was told this is Scottish licensing law which is a straight up lie, as we have been to multiple different places as we are Scottish and travelled round most of Scotland! We then ordered more drinks when we finished eating which one of the owners began to pour and then was told no by the other. Seems like both would be aware of their own licensing law which suggests they were trying to get rid of us! Not sure as to why, considering we are a family consisting of grandparents, parents, siblings...

When we arrived from the ferry my husband and i went to this establishment for a coffee and beer. We spent the day on the island and bought some gifts. Some being local brewed beers. We had time to kill before catching our ferry back so we returned to the black bull. The barmaid said to us in a very loud voice in front of a very busy bar that we were not allowed entry as we had alcohol in a box. She stated that we were breaking the law. Really. If this is the case she could have been a bit quieter. I dont know what the law is but to embarrass two elderly people in this manner is quite appauling. We left with very red faces. Avoid this place as customer service is...
