12 members of my Outdoor Group were walking the Fife Coastal Path and I had booked 2 nights stay for us all in St Andrews, 5 of whom I had booked into Bell Craig. We had walked 15.5 miles that day, taken at a leisurely pace and enjoying the scenery and places of interest. I assume that with 6 rooms to let all guests aren't arriving at the same time? We arrived at 6.45pm. The first of our party to arrive at Bell Craig was confronted by Hazel, who stated she had expected us to arrive at 3.30pm (I have no idea why), had had to wait in all day for us and our luggage and needed to do some shopping. My friend offered to wait in for our other members for her to go shopping but she declined. I know for a fact that our luggage had arrived at 10.00am so even if Hazel was expecting us at 3.30pm she had over 5 hours to go shopping, which was literally round the corner. After I had paid the bill, I asked if there had been any problems as I had heard she had complained. Hazel got very stroppy, denied that she had complained (so we made it up then) and stated she had a lot to do as she ran the place on her own (so presumably needed to be home anyway to get through all her work). Hazel complained that she had been expected to take the suitcases upstairs (I doubt that very much - we're all fit walkers) and informed me that we should pack less!! Although my enquiries had been made calmly, when I left the property she slammed the door. ||One of our party has special dietary needs which I had informed Bell Craig about a month before and had been assured this would not be a problem. The ultimate disgrace was when our luggage transfer man picked us up and informed me that Hazel had complained, yet again, that our friend "couldn't eat this, and she couldn't eat that". How totally unprofessional and unacceptable. Hazel has obviously failed miserably on the "Welcome to My Guest House" course. If SB in the email address is the owner of Bell Craig, I would be extremely worried that this unpleasant woman is detrimental to her business. It doesn't matter what the food and rooms are like when you are confronted with this attitude on your holiday. I had booked 13 different lodgings around the Fife Coastal Path for 12 people and never came across anything like this, or anywhere else for that matter. Do yourselves a favour folks, cross over the road to Craigmore at No.3 Murray Park where you will meet Nicky and Barry who know how to treat paying guests and make them...
Read moreGood location. |Room was clean, spacious and had a lovely bathroom with shower. However, there was only one shower gel and one body lotion for two people and no shampoo or conditioner. The toiletries were not a well known brand. Towels were beautifully soft and nicely folded. |When I inquired about exiting the building in event of a fire I was informed the staircase was the exit. Alarming if the fire was in the hallway downstairs! |There was no decaffeinated coffee on the hospitality tray. There was one small pack of biscuits between two people. |Wifi was unavailable in the room. I had to sit in hallway to use my iPad. |Breakfast was freshly cooked, however, my scrambled eggs were over cooked and dry. There were irregular black flecks in the scrambled egg. I don't think it was pepper as the size of the specks varied and were flat. Brown bread toasted was lovely - there was one slice per person. We had one small marmalade for two people. I am sure more toast or marmalade would have been available but I don't think I should have had to ask a very busy waitress serving five tables. The three nectarines in the fruit bowl were decomposing on top of apples and oranges I asked for a fresh nectarine but there was none available. There was a choice of two breakfast juices - orange or cranberry. Once the cranberry juice jug was empty it took a while to be replenished. Coffee was good quality. Overall I would say our stay was comfortable but the above mentioned issues need addressed before I would recommend...
Read moreWe stayed at Bell Craig for 2 nights in late Sept. Our travel agent had requested and reconfirmed a king size bed however when we arrived and were shown to room 7, we were shocked. The room had a queen size bed and the total room size was about 1 meter around the bed with very small night stands. The only place to put our luggage was under the platform bed. There was an alcove "closet" which had a straight back chair in it, but no way to use the chair or anywhere else to put it in the room.||The bathroom was updated, but very tiny. There is an instant water heater in the shower, which the hostess neglected to tell us required using a switch outside the bathroom door, which we discovered when trying to shower at 9:30 pm! My husband had to go downstairs and ask the hostess how to get water in the shower.||||When we asked the hostess why we didn't have a king room, she said other quests requested those rooms! We thought we had requested a king room as well and felt that she had not been honest with our travel agent about their ability to meet our request.||||Breakfast was cooked to order and tasty. There is no common room for guest use except the breakfast room so only option of a place to relax was to sit on the bed or the hostess recommended a hotel bar down the street. Parking is a challenge in St. Andrews village, especially during the day when St. Andrews College is in session. Location was convenient, walking distance to many...
