What an absolute car crash! And so disappointing as it was a joint birthday meal. From the moment we walked in the service and attention to detail was beyond poor.
So first question why ask on your booking information if it’s a special occasion then fail to acknowledge it? We tried to unpack that one later on but had the ‘we are a chain- info not passed on’ card played. Here’s some feedback - don’t ask if it means nothing to you. By asking you raise the customer’s expectations.
Finally seated and given the menu. No offer of any additional info. We Order drinks. Waiter then wants to take the order still no additional info on menu like what is the cut of the day? Given ‘cut of the day’ is the first thing on the menu I’d think it’s a pretty big deal. So we ask what the cut of the day is. Waiter returns and tells us the special is bolognaise. I’m literally like what??? So again we asked him what is the cut of the day? Answer- there isn’t one. And also there’s no minute steak. I can only assume he’d been told to try and fudge the answer. So literally if you’ve come here expecting a cut of the day or steak of any sort there is none!!
So we take this disappointment on the chin and go about ordering what IS available to us. My husband orders creamy garlic mushrooms and me a goats cheese salad. Mine - bog standard - something I could have thrown together from Tesco. Cheap iceberg lettuce and no other type of salad leaves. My husband had ordered creamy mushrooms - well omg!! Dry as a bone. No cream at all as you can see in the photo. A pile of dried up mushrooms. At this point I’d had enough. Challenged the waiter on the lack of cream. Told that was just the way they came. Literally he was practically horizontal. Asked to speak to a manager. Manager arrives. Listens to the whole story, tries to blame it on inexperienced staff and ignores the additional point of the kitchen and lack of ingredients. So she chooses only to deal with the starter issue. She comes back and tells us the chef said the mushrooms had been cooked in cream it just wasn’t visible now. Seriously you’re having a laugh. I’m thinking I’m being punked by now. Someone is gonna come out and have a laugh at our expense.
Mains arrive. Hallelujah. Fish and chips for the teen celebrating his end of module exams is good. My pork belly nice bit with only one haggis Bon Bon when menu says plural. My husband’s burger - inedible! He described it like cardboard. Seriously- a burger. How bad can you go wrong.
Basically told the waiting staff on clearing the table he wasn’t paying for it, it was that bad.
Given our experience what discount do they apply to to the overall experience? Basically NOTHING!! They took the burger off and failed to even acknowledge how bad our overall experience had been for what should have been an amazing family night out. I am beyond disgusted. We holiday in St Andrews multiple times a year. There is plenty of choice and we won’t be returning here for sure. An absolute disgrace from food to...
Read moreWe came here for a late brunch and were left quite disappointed. First of all when we sat down at the table we found that it was sticky, which is always incredibly off-putting. I had the full Scottish breakfast, but pretty much everything on the plate tasted like it had been sitting there for hours. The hashbrown, black pudding, and potato scone were all hard (I could barely manage to cut the scone with my knife and fork), and the sausage and bacon were lukewarm and just a bit sad-looking. The beans had clearly been sitting out for quite some time as they had formed a bit of a skin. Only the mushrooms and eggs tasted like they were cooked fresh to order. To top it off there was no haggis even though it was supposed to come with it according to the menu. It was the sort of breakfast I would have no problem eating at a hotel buffet or in a student hall, but definitely not something I would expect to pay £11 for. My partner had a burger which I didn't try so cannot comment on personally, though she was equally unimpressed, mainly by the fact that it cost £13 and was in her view not nearly good enoogh to warrant that. I tried some of her chips and they were good I must say, but that's the least you'd expect when you pay 13 quid for a burger and chips. I'm glad to say that the service was very friendly, albeit we had to wait quite a long time to pay the bill despite the fact that there were only about three other tables, so it wasn't really that busy at all. In conclusion, friendly service and a nice setting is not enough to make up for the fact that Mitchell is serving school dinner-quality food at what most people would consider a premium price. We were surprised by how bad it was since most of the reviews are pretty positive. Perhaps they deserve the benefit of the doubt for what could have just been a bad day in the kitchen, but there's little incentive for us to come back and give it a second chance when there are many other better places to choose...
Read moreMy friend and I had lunch at Mitchell's on Saturday and generally found it a bit of a let down, and overpriced for how the food was. We were seated quickly and the service was all fine, but the food and drink was lacking. My friend had a tumeric latte which was unlike anything either of us have ever tasted when having other turmeric lattes. Alongside the tumeric flavour was a very unpleasant herby and oily taste - unsure of exactly what was in it but it was not good at all! We both ordered the club sandwiches and agreed for the price and it being sold by a deli, the bread was pretty disappointing - it was like cheap sliced white bread. The chicken was pretty sparse considering that's usually the main element of a club sandwich, and it wasn't particularly flavourful either. I'd normally expect a club to be served toasted and warm but they were fairly minimally toasted and cold. I think they'd been sat out a while, especially since I asked for mine with no tomatoes and there was clearly small remnants of tomatoes in some of my sandwiches (I wonder if perhaps the kitchen staff had just picked the tomatoes out of one that was already sat ready to go?). We did agree that the chips served with the sandwiches were excellent and my iced coffee was good too. We didn't have to wait too long for our food and the woman who served us was great, and the atmosphere is very nice too. In hindsight I wish we'd brought up the issues at the time, but the food was of the sort where it wasn't great but it also wasn't outrageously bad and we were hungry for our lunch, so we just ate it all and accepted it. I leave this review in the hope that the management can take something from it, however having had a look at some of the other reviews on here it seems similar issues have been raised often but mustn't have been...
