This hotel should have been higher than 2. It was in a great location, cosy and the staff were very friendly and helpful. However, when we arrived in our room we found the cleaner had left dirty towels on the bathroom floor; we did get a drink on the hotel for this, but it left us wondering how thorough the rest of the cleaning was. I found the beds and pillows were lumpy, but the main thing for me was the noise. ||There was a loud droning noise (as if someone had left the bathroom fan on) which we were told was coming from the kitchen extractor fan. We are not stay out late people and seen as the fan didn’t go off until 10.30 pm it was somewhat unpleasant. To add to this the room was hot and although we were provided with a fan, this was also very noisy ( I can usually sleep ok with fans). The alternative was to open the window, but then there was noise of people, including staff cleaning up, banging bins and shouting at each other (room 8) . We were provided ear plugs to help sleep, but I find these uncomfortable and If id have been told this at the time of booking I would not have booked.|We did mention it to reception in the morning and she did move our rooms (room 1) . Great we thought, but we were wrong … this time noise from the bar (live music, people talking/shouting and the hand drier from the toilet) also people coming up and down the stairs. To put this in prospective my sister is hearing impaired and she struggled with the noise. ||The food was average with my goats cheese burger consisting of a big lump of cheese, about 2 small mushrooms and one lettuce leaf. We chose to eat out on the second night. ||This was a deal price and I guess you get what you pay for, but for me a waring you need ear plugs is needed and then you can make a choice if to book. Other rooms might not have a problem...
Read moreLast year we stayed in a Standard Double Room and were disappointed that there was only one chair in a double room. This year we decided to upgrade to a Premium King Size Bed Room and guess what we got - No chairs!!!! We paid an extra £35.00 per night extra compared to last year and wish we had not bothered. The Premium room was no bigger than the Standard and in fact it may have been even smaller hence no chair at all. As for the restaurant on our first of three evening meals we were shown a list of dishes that were off the menu - six of these were mains and about four were starters one of which was soup!!!!! Surely even a half competent chef should be able to make soup for the hotel guests. It was approximately the same for the next two nights of our stay with a number of dishes being unavailable. One couple at the next table to us actually cancelled their reservation and left due to this issue. We encountered the same problem last year. On a positive note the food that we did get was of a high standard but it would have been nice to have the whole menu to choose from. Pity the chef is unable to produce a good soup though. Maybe they need another chef who can do this. Only other issue is that dogs are allowed in the restaurant which we personally find unhygenic. They never used to be allowed in restaurants or anywhere food was served not so many years ago. To finish on a high note the staff were all excellent, cheerful and attentive and could...
Read moreHave stayed at this hotel several times. The staff both running the hotel and serving in its restaurant are EXCELLENT. The food quality in the restaurant is superb and I can highly recommend the garlic mushroom starter - I can guarantee it is the best you will ever taste in your life.
Location is great but there is no dedicated parking. The surrounding streets are too narrow to park in, and you can only park a short time on the nearby square IF THERE IS A SPACE AVAILABLE. Access for the disabled is a little challenging, with flights of steps everywhere both to get into the building, and inside it. No ramps or lifts available but that is understandable in such an old, historic building built on a slope like this.
Where it really is let down - sorry - is the mattresses on the beds. Amongst the worst hotel beds I have ever slept in. They are so hard its like sleeping on slabs of concrete. There is no "give" in them whatsoever. You wake up constantly through the night with back pain, and in the morning you are equally wrecked for the lack of sleep. If they changed the mattresses for some that are softer, this would make a huge difference.
But overall, the service/staff, restaurant and ambience in the place make up for its bedroom...
