My family and I recently returned to Bowden House for our 4th or 5th visit. We have stayed as a family in Chestnut apartment 2 or 3 times, and Lavender in the main house twice because we took my parents with us as well and needed more space for the six of us. We absolutely love it there, and I’m already trying to see if another visit can be fitted into the diary before the year is out. My parents want to return again too. Sally, the lady owner, is so lovely and welcoming, nothing is too much trouble. We have young ones with us and she has happily provided a travel cot to save us dragging one down in an already overloaded car. We always bring lots of things with us as we know it is self catering but shop locally for food supplies too. The apartments are very well kitted out with the essentials and a welcome tray of tea, coffee and biscuits is just what is needed on arrival for the weary traveller. There are plenty of supermarkets in close proximity, as well as pubs and restaurants. Steep Hill is just that, very steep! We walked down but sent someone back to get the car to bring us up again, but the pub at the bottom is well worth a visit. We have also ventured onto the gorgeous beach down there, lots of steps down to it. The views from both apartments are superb, and the location very convenient with plenty of parking. We visited Pennywell Farm, which was just wonderful, and not just for the children, it’s about 20-30 minutes drive away. We have taken our meals and sat outside on the tables and chairs when the weather has been good enough to eat outside. Again the views and the gardens are lovely. ||The accommodation itself is very clean and tidy, the main house is lovely as we discovered when we stayed in Lavender apartment, part of the main house but completely self contained. Sally is very artistic and really should be an interior designer. We love her style. Lots of oohs and aahs from us when we saw her entrance hall with the stairs leading up to our apartment. Inside is gorgeous with a fabulous master bedroom and bathroom. The two other bedrooms are a good size and also have their own bathrooms which was great for us with the different age groups/needs of the family. There’s a huge kitchen and comfy sitting room with those wonderful views. All very clean as you would expect and peaceful too.||Our experience has been nothing but positive….5 star * all the way. Hope to be there again very soon. The stay is so restorative as a mini break from our normal busy lives. We all absolutely love...
Read moreThPictures on the website looked amazing. On arrival, the house looks tired but the views are superb. We stayed in the self catering Lavender apartment in main house. (This is no longer a hotel). Plenty of space, especially the main bedroom with the super king bed with pop up TV. I was disappointed with the bedding. It had a horrible smell. A mix of sweat and wee. I really felt like someone had slept in the bed and the bed linen had not been changed. I was going to complain but my friend who had booked the holiday showed me a previous review whereby someone complained and they were asked to leave. I did ask for another pillow case and sourced a different pillow from the twin room. The quilt cover was larger than the quilt so lots of excess quilt. Some of the fittings were tired and the apartment needed some TLC.||I know it was a self catering apartment but with Covid and cleaning heightened, I would of expected a supply of cleaning products to clean during our stay. We were allocated one dishwasher tablet which we used to wash all the crockery and utensils that we needed. We did buy cleaning products and left them in the apartment for any new guests so hopefully they were available to them.||We had to pass through a sort of lounge room of the owners, to access our apartment and a pile of dirty damp bed linen and towels sat in a pile on the floor for 4 days, with more piled on top over the 4 days. Not acceptable for us to see that or smell it as it smelled very musty in the room.||Apart from the smelly bed linen on our bed and debatable cleaning, we had a reasonable stay at the property.||Just to add, the Wifi was not good, despite boosters in some of the rooms. Had to go outside...
Read moreWhat a lovely property! Took the Grandparents away for a short break and chose this property based on needs of my Father In Law who is struggling to get around now. We stopped in the three bedroom apartment ‘Lavender’ which was really nice( especially the Master Bedroom- very elegant!) there are steps within the apartment to take into consideration, up to the bedrooms and in two out of the three bathrooms but we managed to sort him out nevertheless. The sea view from ‘Lavender’ Is beautiful as the house is located at the top of a hill, beautiful scenery. There’s a pub close by , right at the bottom of the hill, not walkable unless your perfectly able as going down is very steep(the road is even called ‘Steep Hill’) so coming back up is a challenge so we drove down. The food there was really nice. The apartment is well equipment so eating in a couple of evenings was easy too. The beach at the bottom of the hill is a small cove. We didn’t see it when the tide was out so can’t comment really but speaking to a local when the tide is out there’s a small sandy beach area. Take into consideration there’s 75 steps down to it. Location wise the property is about 30mins from Paignton , 40 mins from Brixham and 10mins from Torquay so a great location. You do need a car to get about. There’s plenty of parking for each apartment. The gardens are lovely too with table and chairs so on a warm sunny day you can sit out and enjoy the view. Even though all apartments were occupied it was really quiet and peaceful, we all slept so well. I would highly recommend the property and certainly like to return ourselves again. The photo I’ve uploaded is the view from the kitchen/diner and...
