Coming into the pub we were excited by the facilities and amazing beer garden. However, the management (not young waiting staff who were lovely) created a unwelcoming environment. Whilst we initially with good, friendly service, the manager when he came on shift was particularly obtuse and obnoxious. When we requested to see a food menu upon entering, we were told 6 pm by the waiters. However, upon asking the manager, we were abruptly told that there was no availability until 8 despite the pub being almost entirely empty. Service from that point was horrendously slow, with regular visits by waiting staffs stopping. Furthermore, when inquiring about the food situation the manager offered no remedies, saying chips were unavailable and without offering bar snacks etcetera. He also ignored us whilst giving service to other tables diligently. One waitress finally offered a form of explanation, apologising to us for the lack of clarity. She was able to sort us some chips despite his previous comments on the impossibility of this mission. To us, clearly outsiders from the lovely sedated village setting, it seemed that to this particular manager did not want us there or our custom. This environment made a lovely pub unenjoyable, and frankly ruined our afternoon. I hope the ownership can rectify this manager, as I am a concerned that this is a trend that affects anybody outside of the management's perceived...
Read moreTable reserved for Sunday Lunch. We were 15 minutes late arriving but phoned to tell restaurant who assured us not a problem. Met and shown to our table and , opp9siteca Party of 12 or so. offered water, given a menu each. Discussing what we would have it became obvious we had different Menus. When asked if we had chosen we asked which Menu was for today. That sorted, we ordered Wine and the starter a Camembert sharer, finally arrived. No side plates, bread whilst good quality but not being crusty not able to dip into the cheese as was not liquid enough. Then the wait for the Main Courses, arrivals entered the restaurant, ordered their meals , sat and completed their meals, Staff kept walking past. Our food finally arrived, 40 minutes after the starter had been completed. The very nice bottle of wine finished by then. My wife's Gammon was curled up at the edge, veg was cold, Yorkshire Pudding stone cold. My food was cold also, obviously smacked of being put to one side and forgotten about. Went to Bar to inform Manager, he seemed mildly amused, saying he had just watched the plates being delivered to our table. YES , but cold. He charged only for the wine. Have been previosly and enjoyed the food etc. My daughter made the reservation for us, she had been twice recently and spoke highly of the food, taking photos etc. Perhaps its just our luck but on the day not a place I...
Read moreThis is the second time we have been here within 10 days. First time we met some friends who were staying at Brixham, it would be a good meeting point. We walked in and was impressed by the decor and all the lovely Christmas decorations that made you feel festive. We had an amazing dinner and our guess from Gloucestershire loved it. The food was excellent and the portions were very generous. The only downside for our Thursday evening, after sitting for an hour or so eating our food, we decided to sit in the snug just to finish off our drinks and catch up with our friends. It was only 9.30 but was told they were closing and would like us to finish up and leave. It was three weeks before Christmas, and so if they just gave us another half an hour, it would have made it a perfect evening. That was the only disappointing thing I can say about this pub. We were so impressed we decided to take two other friends for a Sunday roast. My goodness it was NOT a disappointment. We are vegetarians and was so impressed with quality of the food, at such a reasonable price compared to other restaurants in the area. Whoever the owners are, keep it going and we will keep coming, just can you let us stay longer...
