Comfortable lodges let down by poor housekeeping and limited kitchen equipment. Not comparable to other 5-star holiday lets (e.g. Rural Retreats).
The Lodges at Cameron House are definitely showing their age, although overall they've been well maintained (NB that the Lodges at Cameron House are separate to the newer Lodges at Cameron Club and the Cameron North Lodge).
Interiors are comfortable, and generally furnished well, although the beds and bedding is definitely more 4-star than 5-star.
However, general housekeeping standards were poor. There was a layer of dust so thick on the back of the bedroom TVs that mice could have skied on it (obviously, you'd need to teach the mice how to ski first). Bathroom toiletries hadn't been refilled before our stay, one even had the dispenser pump hanging out from where previous guests had presumably removed it (because the wall bracket was so loose it was hard to use) - a really surprising oversight by housekeeping staff. Drinking glasses weren't properly cleaned.
Also, kitchen equipment was too limited for a longer stay, and oddly stored. There were no baking trays or oven safe dishes other than a casserole dish. There were no serving spoons and no storage containers. Drinking glasses were limited and mismatched, and all glassware was stored in a dresser in the living area which was hugely impractical. What kitchen equipment there was had also been spread out across every single drawer and kitchen cupboard - even if it meant there was one utensil taking up an entire kitchen cupboard shelf. It was obviously intended to make it look generous and well supplied, but actually it meant there was no space to put your groceries, without first having to rearrange the entire kitchen - what a pain.
Also, charging separately for electricity usage is odd. Ours was roughly equivalent to 1% of the total cost of the stay, so it seems a very strange thing to separate from the rental price (especially since electricity use is tax deductible for furnished holiday lets). The inconvenience of having every guest call up to provide card details for this ahead of the stay, and the labour costs of having someone manage those calls, monitor meter readings and charge them, can't possibly justify it.
In truth these are minor gripes (though they really do need to sort out the cleaning), and our stay overall was good. What they highlight, however, is that the lodges aren't truly comparable to other 5-star holiday lets. If you've stayed in a Rural Retreats or Landmark Trust property, you'll definitely notice the step down in quality at...
Read morearrived at Cameron House Hotel, a self-proclaimed 5-star luxury retreat, for a mini break, and while the initial impression was striking, the experience quickly fell short of expectations. The hotel’s stunning grounds and picturesque loch walk were undeniable highlights, but the overall stay felt more like a 3-star experience than the promised luxury.|The hotel itself is in desperate need of TLC. Carpets were marked, curtains frayed, and small details—like a poorly stocked tea and coffee box—were overlooked. Housekeeping was inconsistent; our bed sheets were not changed once during our stay, and while milk in the fridge was replaced daily, there was no clarity on its freshness. Cleaning was satisfactory but far from the meticulous standard expected of a 5-star property.|Service was a consistent letdown. Staff were friendly but visibly overwhelmed, lacking proper training in customer service and finesse. Management was notably absent, only appearing to smile for high-profile guests like a famous footballer. Breakfast was chaotic, with long waits for tea, coffee, or menu orders—one guest waited over 45 minutes for their meal. A young waiter shouting “two lattes” across the dining room summed up the lack of professionalism.|Dining experiences were mixed. The Grill offered good food but was let down by slow service and untrained staff. In contrast, the Italian restaurant at the Marina provided a far better experience for both lunch and dinner, with attentive service and quality dishes.|The gym was well-equipped, and the in-house cinema was a popular touch, but the pool and adjoining facilities felt dated. Check-out was an utter fiasco, with only one receptionist managing a queue out the door—a stressful situation no staff member should face alone. The team worked hard under pressure, but the lack of adequate staffing and management oversight was glaring.|While the grounds are beautifully maintained and the location is breathtaking, Cameron House did not live up to its impeccable reputation or 5-star billing. For the price, there are far better options offering superior service and well-maintained facilities. A disappointing stay that left us wanting...
Read moreMy wife and I spent two nights here at the beginning of our honeymoon to fill the gap between our wedding and flying out to Singapore.
We arrived around 10 pm and checked in. when we got to the room which was supposed to be a junior suite but was a fairly cramped room with a couple of extra arm chairs, we sat down with the room service menu.
When the food arrived my wife's club sandwich which was supposed to come with an omelette instead had a fried egg. when we called to complain we were told that they couldn't do anything about it as the kitchen was now closed, so only dishes from the fairly limited and uninspiring night menu.
The following day we spent some time chilling in the spa and then went to the restaurant for dinner. The restaurant staff were lovely and were the saving grace of the hotel. The steak was tasty and very well cooked and then the Congratulations dessert platter we were presented with was a lovely touch.
Feeling that the first night was probably just a bit of a blip yet more issues occurred when we went to check out. We were expecting to pay for the room service (grudgingly) and the dinner the night before, having already paid for the room when the booking was made. we were handed the full bill including the room. It turns out that the credit card payment had failed when the initial booking had been made but they had not bothered to let us know before hand.
All in all for what is meant to be a 5 star hotel the level of service compared to any other hotel I have stayed in was awful and my rating would have been lower had it not been for the restaurant. Every time we interacted with the reception staff we were left with the impression that we were causing them an...
