I’ve been travelling around Wales and the UK for filming work for the last 15 years. With the kind of work we do, filming in mountains or swimming with cameras often until after dark.. and often arriving late, we are used to being greeted by lovely owners welcoming us after a full days work and usually really interested in our stories of the day and happy to send us off the next day feeling well slept and well fed. The Bear, however, was a different story. I was due to arrive 20 minutes after their curfew time, so I rang ahead (with a 2 hour drive ahead of me) to inform them of my arrival time - I was instantly told I would need to find alternative Accomodation. I honestly thought she was joking 😆 … but it turns out she was deadly serious, and not only that - she wouldn’t let my filming pal (who’s was saying 2 doors down) come and collect my key early - so when I arrived I wouldn’t have to knock on the door. Long story short - they told me I wasn’t welcome and no one would be there to let me in - issued no refund and weren’t willing to flex on 20 minutes to allow me in. Rules are rules. And fair enough. But the owners were so incredibly rude and impersonal - I feel that some people are meant to work in hospitality - and others not. The Bear, unfortunately, is the latter. Speaking to a few locals in the pub that evening - it turns out they have an awful reputation in the village even amongst locals - some of whom offered me to stay with at their homes, with no alternative Accomodation. Rhayader - lovely village with wonderful locals - the Bear - (read the...
Read moreSpent a wonderful two nights at The Bear, in a lovely, spacious and spotlessly clean room. Greeted so warmly by Sian the owner on arrival, she showed us to our rooms and booked us in for breakfast the following morning.
Slept really well, the beds were so very comfortable and the bathroom shower was lovely and hot which set me up for a day of adventure in the Elan Valley.
Breakfast was delicious and cooked perfectly, the portion size is very generous and very tasty. Sian and her husband look after their guests really well and every need is catered for, they offer superb customer service.
I have limited mobility but was pleasantly surprised how accessable getting around the bear was. There are a few steps into the main entrance but these were not a problem and were easily surmountable with a walking stick.
I will definitely be staying at The Bear again in the future and can highly recommend the establishment for its high standards of customer care, comfort and...
Read moreIt seems that the people at the Bear are very judgemental. They turned my overweight friend away, who had booked and paid a room there, saying the room was not suitable for them. They left them to either go home or find another accommodation elsewhere, last minute, on a busy weekend. I can not understand such antisocial behaviour. Gladly my friend found something much nicer a few doors down the street.
Update on reply: Their own bathroom is smaller than the one your room had and they mentioned that this bathroom was totally suitable for them. When the person then said oh I might need to travel back home then your inappropriate reply was: That's a good idea. So, I do think I have the full story and it was quite...
