Fantastic location, helpful staff, brilliant value for money.
Located within Grasmere, there are plenty of local options for food and a small co-op closeby, or you can get a very short bus ride to Ambleside for more options.
Staff were more than accommodating and very friendly, allowing me to check in slightly early as they were at the desk anyway, allowing me to get on with my trip.
At £30 for two nights, I was accommodated within a six person room. Beds were comfortable with bedding provided, as well as a decent sized locker, but you will require your own combination or key padlock (which are sold at reception if you forget like I did!). The main expense for me ended up being food, YHA can provide both breakfast and dinner for reasonable prices, but if you're on a tighter budget, you can bring your own food and use the facilities within to prepare your own meals. Parking was also included, allowing me to use bus services and save on some high fees for car parking around the lakes.
The option to share a room with five strangers may not be for everyone, but for the price, you can't fault it. In my experiences at YHA's, everyone you share with is always friendly, so don't let the thought of sharing with strangers put you off!
This YHA is perfectly located for good fell walking without the need of using your car or a bus, which was the main attraction for me. I will definitely be returning and would recommend it to anyone else!

Read moreVery disappointed with the service from the YHA. I had a room booked at their Grasmere Hostel on Sunday 04/03/18 and due to the terrible weather we had experienced I contacted them on the Friday before to change the booking as I did not want to risk making the journey across the country given the conditions. I was informed by the friendly staff member that as the hostel itself was not closed and as I had booked using a discount code there was nothing they could do so I had to either travel and risk being stranded or worse or lose my money! I waited until the Sunday morning but forecasts of further heavy snow and the closure of one of the two roads I could take across the country caused me to decide not to travel. I contacted the YHA via email and explained the situation feeling that I had a reasonable case to ask for a credit so I could book another break when the weather improved. Two days later I received a very nice email which basically said the hostel was open so it's just tough. The fact that the RAF had been dispatched to helicopter supplies into areas of Cumbria on the Monday morning was lost in them.
Sadly I will not be using their facilities in the future and I urge others to be very cautious if they choose to, they clearly do not care about their customers welfare once they have their money.
Let's face it, there are plenty other...
Read moreThe hostel is a great size and is spotless.||The staff are great, friendly and professional. We were signed in by Emily who was very helpful.||The carpark is not next to the hostel, it is about 3-4 minutes walk. You can run your stuff up but it is a pain trapsing down to the car in the rain when you’ve forgotten something.||There are 2 self catering kitchens. A very small one in the main building off the dining room and one in the annex a minutes walk away. They lock the door to the dining room at 7 and they don’t advertise this on the door so if you put anything in the fridge in the small self catering kitchen and you want to access it later on you can’t.||The kitchen in the annex is adequate but due to a mistake with the keyfob we weren’t able to access it the following day and had to walk back to reception to get the key fob redone.||The hostel is very clean and spacious. The drying room is great. Free laundry facilities. The lounge is a good size and there is also a TV room.||The hostel is on the lane up to Easedale tarn and there is tons of walks from the door. Helm Crag and Loughrigg Fell for example. All pretty easy half day walks.||We found the hotel bar 1769 to serve awesome food.||Look out for red squirrels everywhere round the hostel and in the village.||Get some gingerbread from the wee shop,...
