We had an awful stay at Beechlands, the place was dark and dingy and so dirty that when we arrived that I spent 1 1/2 hours cleaning it, I even found bugs in the fridge and the washing machine drawer was black with thick mould so we couldnt use that. The dust was so thick you could write your name in it (which was entertaining for our kids!). The furniture is so old, no springs left in the sofas, nothing matched and everything was so old and grubby. It says recently renovated but it must have been about 15 years ago! Guy who runs it and his family are really nice so it is a shame they dont care for the place. There were rusty old tins on the shelves filled with tat and it was poorly equipt not enough bowls and cutlery for a family of 4. The rug in the small lounge/diner/kitchen was so threadbare and dirty. It is filled with old tat. I moved around the furniture and made it as good as I could. We couldnt sleep in one of the beds as we spent the first night in it and itched so much we couldnt sleep in it again. We had to stay for a wedding otherwise we would have left after one night but left 3 days early as we couldnt bare it any longer. The grounds of the farm were dangerous for smal chilldren. The couple downstairs (yes someone lives downstairs although this is misleading as we were told when we booked it was unoccupied) complained that my small kids were too noisy although they were just showing normal 3 and 5 year old behaviour as the walls are so thin you can hear everything between the apartments. On the day we left we noticed that someone had hit our car and left a large dent in the side in the car park for the farm. I could go on more but my advice is not to stay here - its expensive for what you get, have stayed in far better for far less. Also it is a little out of Chagford and the steep hill wasnt an ideal walk with children so we needed the car more than we...
Read moreStayed for a week in the wonderfully elegant main house. Clean & bright with stunning outlook onto the surrounding countryside. Interesting artefacts around the well appointed house which has a tranquil feel to it. The only thing missing for me was toilet brushes!! We were blessed with good weather and sitting outside, the only interruption to the peace is the wonderful bird song. Short but steep hill climb to the charming village of Chagford with local pubs serving food, a delightfully welcoming Church, Spar, grocer & bakery etc. Lovely walks from the doorstep and driving through the (typically narrow) country lanes one is treated to unspoilt views of the Devon countryside. ||Have stayed in many Helpful Holiday homes, but this ranks as one of my favourites. iin short, if you are looking for modern and swanky, this house is not for you. However, if you are looking for elegance and charm - this house absolutely fits the bill! Would we come again?...
Read moreBeechlands Farm is about 1/4 mile from the picturesque village of Chagford and just down the road from the edge of Dartmoor with it's stone circles, tors and haunting landscapes. Chagford has a pub, bakery, grocery store, cheese store, fantastic deli, a wine store, fresh vegetable stand and a great art gallery. Beechlands Farm has B&B rooms and also a 3 bedroom, 2 bath apartment you can rent by the week. We have not stayed in the B&B, but the apartment is compact and comfortable with a kitchen area in the living/dining room and a small washer and dryer set in one of the bathrooms. The apartment is in a stone building next to the stables and is upstairs. The surrounding countryside is beautiful. We had internet and our hosts printed out our boarding passes for our return flight home. You do need a rental car to get here (hint: get a compact car as the lanes...
