Michael and I just returned from a getaway trip to the Mansion at Ocean Edge in Brewster, MA. We chose this hotel for its proximity to a lot of Cape Cod. We were looking for a home base to explore the Cape but where we could also lounge in the room for a bit. We chose to get a corner suite.|The grounds to this hotel are beautiful, stunning even. Driving in, we were very impressed with its beauty. |The GOOD:|All of the staff are very very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and had a ton of space including a kitchenette and two bathrooms. Our bed at night was SO VERY COMFORTABLE and the bedding was very soft. We had two balconies and the loungers on the balconies were incredibly comfortable.||The BAD:|We came to this hotel at the end of October so we expected that the hotel would be in its low season. But there were NO bellmen to help with the bags. We drove around to our parking area to meet with the head of maintenance who would help with the bags. And there we found a set of 10-15 steps to get to our building. And no way to get bags up the stairs except to haul them up the stairs. The maintenance guy (whose name I have forgotten) was absolutely WONDERFUL dragging our bags up to our room. There is simply no way to avoid the stairs unless you have a handicap placard. This is something I wish I would have known ahead of time. While I don't yet qualify for a handicap placard, my knees are pretty bad and I generally want to avoid stairs.|Another disappointment was with a name like Ocean Edge, I thought I might have more than a distant view of the ocean. ||The UGLY:|Now to get to the furniture in the living room portion of the suite. There was a sofa bed which had clearly seen better days. When you sat on it, you sat slightly off balance because one side of the sofa was higher than the other. I can only imagine how uncomfortable the bed inside the sofa would have been. Thankfully, that was not something we needed to try. |I asked my husband to grab a chair out of the bedroom to sit on as my back could not take sitting slanted as I was on the sofa. I will need a solid chiropractic appointment following being in that sofa. To stay in a room for the price we paid for a corner suite, I would expect that the furniture would at the very least have been in good repair.|Across from the sofa. pushed up next to a wall was a divan kind of thing which had also seen better days and was also very uncomfortable. ||When we arrived into the suite, I was looking forward to the fireplace in the living area. Unfortunately, it did not appear to be working. We called to the front desk and an engineer came up to try to solve the problem. He was unable to do so but the problem WAS fixed the next day which was nice. ||The location for this resort is exactly what we wanted. An easy drive to most of the Cape. But I am not sure we would stay again (or if we did, I might consider inviting my ...
Read moreWe stayed at Mansion at Ocean Edge for a long weekend the first weekend of September meeting with family who live in the area. The weather was warm enough to wear shorts and go to the beach without the summer crowds. So, I would definitely go back in September. We stayed in a Premier King in the East Wing, and the location is perfectly centered to go anywhere on the resort. It was close to the Terrace for meals or to sit and enjoy the fire bowls at night with a drink from the bar, or the front lawn for pizza and games, or a walk down to the beach, or the bike rental and hit the rail trail, or the pool and tennis courts. So many things to do. We were also provided a schedule of activities that were happening. The mansion and the grounds of the estate are just breathtaking. The amazing gate and entrance to the resort, the historical furnishings in the mansion, the string lights on the front lawn and the shrubs shaped like waves. |The room was decorated with high end cape style furnishings with the extra touches that were appreciated. The books with the history of the area, candy from the Chatham Candy Shop, elegant vintage light fixtures over the head of the bed and the loofah package for the shower. The bathroom and the double door closet with draws were larger than expected. Love the round leather mirror. Even the extra bathroom supplies were in toile bags.|We had breakfast and dinner in the Roscommon Room which is a step back in time with the wood, fireplace, bar, antique paintings, windows and ceiling. We were lucky enough to have Webb as our waiter for dinner. The food and drinks at every meal were outstanding, Shrimp Mango Ceviche and Bouillabaisse were the hit of the night. Lunch was on the terrace with views of the water and Petar served up some Ocean Edge specialty drinks. We spent both nights after dinner out on the terrace by the fire bowls meeting new friends and enjoying the warm weather. It could not have been better.| All the staff we met were very friendly, hardworking and very helpful. We had such a wonderful time, we are already planning our trip back. We will stay longer to get to use more of the amenities. Next time, I definitely want to do the Sound Bath, lunch at the Beach Bar, spend a night on the front lawn and the enjoy the live music in Bayzo's Pub.|Thank you for the bag with take home cranberry and white chocolate cookies!!!|Already missing Ocean Edge and looking forward to...
Read moreThe Presidential Villas at Ocean Edge have the potential to be a premiere luxury accommodation on Cape Cod. Sadly, while the property is lovely and the mansion and the villas were once spectacular, everything is in need of renovation, care, and upgrade and management needs to pay closer attention to staffing and details. To start, we arrived to our villa and dirty beach towels were strewn in the parking lot. Three days later, those towels were still there. While the villas are quite large and well appointed, carpets in the villas are musty and the buildings smell of mold. I suspect that a different flooring option this close to the water is necessary and a fresh coat of paint on each of the bldgs is necessary. They look tired and dated. The bathroom facilities by the ocean were either not functional (ladies room was closed requiring women to use the men's bathroom where the toilet was no longer flushing... completely overflowing and more reminiscent of a filthy outhouse than a luxury property. Staffing during Labor Day weekend was clearly an issue as well. Beach personal did not have clean towels available, told guests to go get their own chairs, said umbrellas could not be put up due to a shift change (and never came to help assist those who arrived during said change...a major reason for us staying at this property, my husband has skin cancer and sitting unexposed in the sun is not an option). Many, many guests were upset that food and drink service on the beach was either non-existent, slow, or denied altogether. The poor servers who were working did their best, but clearly management needs to come up with a solution and help these people out. (Perhaps pay ppl the wages they deserve so that you can hire local residents through the end of the summer?) To cap it all off, this morning, maintenance came to renovate or repair the villa beside ours...at 8 am...loudly talking, banging, slamming doors on a holiday. Less than perfect all the way around. Quite disappointing but these are all issues which could be fixed with attention and effort. This property truly has the opportunity to be spectacular given its history and location…it’s being let to slip at the moment. I hope...
