Super 8 by Wyndham Meadowlands — Hotel in Carlstadt

Avoid this place if you can! The service here is absolutely terrible, and I cannot emphasize this enough!! I booked this place for my parents, who were taking my 66-year-old uncle, aunt, and my grandmother, who is in her 80s, on a trip as it was their first time visiting the country. I had reserved two double rooms for them and they arrived at the hotel late at night after a long day of traveling. One room was for my dad and uncle, and the second room was for my mom, aunt, and grandmother. After receiving their key cards, my family went up to their respective rooms and found that the rooms were not adjacent, which was odd since the two rooms were booked together. However, my family overlooked this and went to their rooms.

The real problem began when my dad and uncle went into their room and used the bathroom, only to find that the toilet did not flush! My dad went down to tell the receptionist and asked if it could be fixed. However, understandably, there was no one available at night to fix the toilet, so my dad requested the room in between the two rooms, which my mom had found to be vacant as they were able to check from the balconies. The receptionist very rudely denied this request and falsely claimed that the room was booked, which was not the case. She refused to offer any other accommodations and instead harshly told my dad that they could all just leave and find another hotel in the middle of the night. This suggestion was not only impractical but shockingly disrespectful!! Where would my family find another hotel in the middle of the night in the New Jersey suburbs (an area they are entirely unfamiliar with) in the middle of the night?

After making this very argument, she begrudgingly decided to open the very room that was in between, claimed she would check it, and at last, gave my parents that room to shift to, where everything seemed fine. If this room was available, why not give it to my family from the start? The two rooms were literally next to each other, but initially, my family was given rooms that were one room apart when I had booked the two rooms together. Why give my family a hard time? To suggest that elderly guests leave the establishment in the middle of the night, far from any alternatives, instead of simply providing a suitable room, is utterly disgraceful and despicable! No receptionist should treat anyone (customer or not) in such a callous manner!! The receptionist could have easily provided the room instead of causing unnecessary inconvenience. It was deplorable behavior from that receptionist, and she should be ashamed of herself for giving people much older than her such a hard time just for wanting a room with a functioning toilet!

For this, I would give the hotel zero stars if possible! We will never again book this hotel and recommend everyone to steer clear of such a place. Why put my family through the unnecessary hassle? Why not simply give them the available room from the start? The receptionist's behavior was unprofessional and lacking in basic courtesy. It’s unacceptable to treat any guest, especially elderly and potentially non-English speaking individuals, with such disdain. We booked this hotel for 2 nights cause the hotel is located near the stadium where the match was gonna be. We called the hotel before arriving (1pm) to ask if we can do an early checking and since we are platinum members we are allowed to do that upon request. The receptionist said we couldn't cause there was no room available at all. We thought it was fine and maybe the whole hotel was booked cause of the match. So we waited till 3pm to do the check-in. Till that time everything was fine.

Once we got to the room wasn't clean properly, it was dusty, dead bugs and hair on the floor. So we went back to the receptionist and she sent the cleaning lady to check on the room and to clean it again.

Once the cleaning lady arrived, she wasn't happy that she had to go and check the room. We were nice and polite towards her and we explained what we found and no matter what we said she was trying to make and excuse about why the room was like that. She even called back the receptionist and she was trying to make us look like we were exaggerating. Then, the cleaning lady said to us in Spanish (cause she's latina and we speak Spanish as well) the room had been cleaned 2 days ago that was the reason it was dusty. if we don't like the room how it was clean we can ask to be changed to a new room and if we don't like the hotel, we can go and ask the hotel our money back and we can go to somewhere else.

Honestly, I didn't wanna argue with her cause I didn't wanna waste my time. So my husband went back to the lobby, they gave us a new room. This time it was clean. The next day, I was trying to be polite... again... and we saw the other cleaning lady and I approached just to let her know that we didn't need room service, she was all bitter, like if she wasn't wanna be bother and she was answering me with attitude, asking me questions... "what room? huh? when did you arrive? we dont give service until 2 days after check-in" ….which we didn't know that cause nobody let us know.

To all that, the AC in the room is not strong enough so no matter if we put the coldest temperature, the room doesn't get cold enough. You need to let the water running like more than 20min to get hot water and once you get it, it last like 2-3min and then the water is cold again. The safe-box wasn't working. There's no breakfast at all. Just juice and coffee (both from a machine). The door from the garage has the sensor to tap the card to open the door but it was never locked, so that's not safe at all. The hotel inside is very hot cause the way is made, all the air coming out from the ACs stay inside the hotel and it makes dusty. It's just weird.

And if we do a recap we called at 1pm to do an early check-in they told us there was no room available but then the cleaning lady tells us the room is being ready since 2 days ago... I mean, what's the point of being Platinum Members if we can't use the benefits of it. It's just so...

The last time I stayed at this property was back in 2017 when it was an Econo Lodge and they were in the process of renovating the rooms. I actually enjoyed staying there back then and liked the renovations. I had booked a business suite as the price difference at the time of my booking was only a few dollars and I wasn't disappointed. This stay was part of my Mother's Day present to my mother, which also included tickets to see a Broadway Show and a nice dinner. Once I checked in, I went to the room and was pleased that room looked as nice as from when I stayed there as an Econo Lodge. They did however add a walk-in shower to the rooms, which was amazing. The room was clean and I was pleased to see a full size kitchen with 2 stools to sit at the counter and a high top table with stools to sit, which some of the stools were uneven however I felt safe sitting on mine. Everything worked in the bathroom, which I've stayed places where that wasn't the case. I did have to go to the registration desk to ask for wash cloths and tissues, which the housekeeper forgot to place in the room. In the list of amenities listed free coffee and a breakfast item. I actually brought cereal and milk to have with the breakfast item. I was originally under the assumption that breakfast item referred to either a prepacked danish or muffin (not of significant size), which is what was part of the Continental Breakfast that they had when it was the Econo Lodge. It should be noted that their Continental Breakfast wasn't much however it was serviceable. The Breakfast Item that is referred to refers to orange and apple juice, which were good and that coffee was also good. I know the property owner doesn't care what I think however they should change the description from breakfast item to juice. I checked out this morning.
