My most vivid memories of this full service inn are nothing and nobody. I checked in on a National Holiday where virtually everyone in the city ran away from home. At dusk there was our car and two others in the parking lot, and the only party on duty was the desk clerk. They had closed their bar, and restaurant, and the activity in the place was downright spooky. There wasn't anything really wrong but a huge hotel full of nobody feels sort of weird.
This property is undergoing an intense renovation, and they had plastic taped up over the walls all over the building. The meeting rooms had the walls ripped out to the studs, and portions of the dining room and other areas. We were checked into the 5th floor, which also was a patchwork of sheet plastic taped to the walls. The whole building doesn't look very old, but still they are either tearing it down or fixing it up.
Our guest room was in plenty good shape with the exception of the heat. It was a very cool night out, but not cold. We turned the heat on and waited, and were on the very edge of asking for a different room when it very slowly reached a comfortable temperature. One could look at the air vent grille which had rust on it, and was victim to multiple paintings to reveal that this building is much older than it appears to the naked eye. We were able to get it warm enough in there I elected not to take the problem to the front desk.
The bathroom facilities were sparkling clean and mold free with adequate fresh towels. The sleeping room had the most unusual furniture in there with big counters, and a place to work. However, the most unusual feature of this hotel were it's reading lamps which could be directed towards a book allowing only one person to read while the others could get to sleep. That is the most thoughtful and needed feature I've bumped into in any brand anywhere, and I can only wish that the technology would permeate the hospitality business across the land. Behind the head board was ambient lighting that illuminated the wall up to the ceiling in a soft, pleasing glow but was not offensive if someone was trying to sleep with the lights on.
Even with repairs in progress, and no hotel facilities open for business I didn't feel too cheated for what we paid. In the morning one lonely person was on duty in the dining area in the event of any stragglers wanting cooked to order breakfast. I didn't want to wake this person unnecessarily so we just loaded up our bags and went on to Denny's and let them sleep.
It's not a bad place, and it will get up to Holiday Inn standards in short order. I would recommend it to another and if I'm back that way I would come back again. In the driveway they had a pretty water feature, and the grounds looked good. I could care less about the pool or fitness equipment and I didn't even take a look. I appreciate those two college students who had to work on a National holiday because there was nothing going on and hardly worth paying anyone to come to work for no more...
Read moreFirst to start our Saturday Morning off after a rough evening at 7AM sharp SATURDAY MORNING we and everyone else in the hotel were awoken by the lovely sound of chain saws directly outside our window (see photo)
Although i will say, i thoroughly enjoyed the room and the Bed ...it really was a Great Bed!!!
This was overshadowed by the rudeness of the Staff. My wife went to get Coffee which in most properties is free, express or full service IHG locations, and at most properties if its not free the staff generally gave it to me as a curtesy. that being said i was ok paying for it BUT after informing me about cost the two waitresses that really had no other customers, acted as if we were an aggravation to them. We agreed to pay(which entailed only in telling them a room number and nothing was verified) my wife then asked for a carrier or tray of some kind again met with rudeness. Now before all this my wife asked the woman at the front desk where we could get Coffee (later discovered she was general manager) we were met with what can only be described as rudeness or her frustration, I'm not sure exactly which but neither should have been shown to a guest. I stay at a lot of IHG properties and generally they take very good care of me, this is why i am and have been a spire member for years.
We called IHG customer care and while we were still on the phone with them the general manager my wife encountered at front desk called the room to ask what was the problem. we told her and she informed us that the points we had discussed with customer care about being returned for the stay (room was booked with points) that this would not be the case. i am not sure what outcome actually was or will turn out but i will concede that after this incident the manager did make efforts to engage us in conversation and be friendly, but where as we were cordial back we felt it was a case of too little too late. I get it that we all have bad days, and IM SURE she was getting chewed out left and right by ALL the guests over her choice of times to schedule the annual tree trimming on the property, BUT that does not excuse rudeness. Now real problem is i loved the room minus the incredibly small TV, and the bed was superb. The property is very close to where I needed to be for work and personal engagements, so I really will have to think hard on whether i will stay at the property again or not. Normally I would just mark this one off the list, but i may have to give them another shot. I truly hope the next stay if i do decide to stay there again will be a...
Read moreThis hotel makes me so sad as it has great bones and could be turned into one of the nicest hotels in the area. However, everything is very dated and the whole hotel needs an overhaul/update/facelift. The room was large and spacious, but VERY OVERPRICED for the condition, the lack of heated pool that isn’t told to guests, along with the non working hot tub/jacuzzi. There was never more than one visible employee working at any given time and we spent 4 days/3 nights. There were times when we waited up to 20 minutes behind a single customer just to be acknowledged or to add an item to our room charges from the market. There were many times we would have gotten items from the market that were just left after waiting forever and not being acknowledged. Breakfast offers a pretty good variety if you’re staying 1-2 days. Anything longer than that and you quickly realize it’s just the same thing over and over and gets old. The hot items could be changed up and rotated to prevent that. In addition, avoid the biscuits and gravy as the gravy resembled cloudy water with no flavor. The pool is advertised as an amenity, yet it was UNHEATED and like ice and the hot tub water was filthy and the hot tub was not working properly. We stayed at this hotel specifically for the pool and hot tub. The Wyndham hotel 5 minutes away was a similar size room, a much more comfortable and updated atmosphere with employees that seem to center on customer service and gave us a room rate of $75/night. Less than 1/2 what we were charged per night at this one. We had originally selected this hotel because the staff at the Wyndham were upfront and honest about their pool being ice cold. After staying at the Holiday Inn College Station, we highly regret not spending the entire time at the Wyndham, as it was a much more updated/ beautiful hotel (interior) with amazing customer service and would have cost us less than half what we paid for most of our trip. The ONLY redeeming factors of this hotel is that the rooms are huge, the breakfast staff were very friendly and attentive, and when finally acknowledged after standing in line forever most times at the front desk, the staff was always very nice and accommodating. If it wasn’t for the friendliness of the staff once they finally acknowledge your presence, this hotel would definitely...
