Coming into Elkins, we found a couple of hotels closed for renovations. This really is more of a summer town with the railroad and proximity to Cass scenic railway but we just thought we would come by as part of an eight-day winter getaway trip. My friend had stayed here before when it was a days Inn but when we arrived here we found it had changed names and management.
The building is a former hospital. It is sturdy but it definitely has the feel of an institutional building. There is no exercise room, there is no games room, there is no pool, there is no whirlpool, there is no sauna, there is no bar, there is no restaurant, no newspapers, no business center, no convenience store, no room with plants (as shown on the hotel website).
You can take the elevator to the third floor (other floors and rooms are rented out to businesses and medical offices) where you get a small room with 2 beds. The bathroom is handy if you like grab bars to get up off the toilet. No sink in the bathroom, no tub in the bathroom, just a shower head at the far end of the bathroom and a curtain. The sink is right next to one of the beds.
Room is very small, if you need to open your luggage the only place you have to put it is on your bed. To avoid tripping over the chair in the room we had to place it in the shower. Windows do not open. Television menu specifically states it has the weather channel (channel 3) and it does not. Our television remote control batteries were dead.
The biggest disappointment was breakfast.we were told breakfast was included. When we went to the room in the morning all of the chairs were still on top of the tables, there was one carafe of extremely weak coffee but no milk no cream no half and half. Just powdered whitener. No hot water, no tea, no hot chocolate. There were packages of oatmeal but no hot water for them and no bowls. There were tiny little boxes of cereal but no bowls and no spoons. No fruit no yogurt no bread no Bagels no baked goods, just packages of Pop-Tarts and pre-packaged danishes. Needless to say we left without eating.
the biggest surprise was that of our 8-day trip which went through New York state, Pennsylvania state, Maryland State, Virginia state and West Virginia state, this "hotel" was the most expensive by $20 and was the smallest room, least amenities, and poorest breakfast.
Fine if you need a place just to sleep for the night and have no...
Read moreTook forever to check in-slow service. Elevator was old. 2nd floor is for corrections. 3rd Floor is for hotel guests. I cannot sleep without AC. The old unit did not work for AC. When I told the front desk-she acted like she was agitated. She said she would be right up to check it but she told me to open a window instead. Had to go back and request her to come two more times before she finally did. She told me the AC was working but it was not. We went into the hallway and she said it was cool in the hall. The AC does work in the halls but the rooms are units from the hospital days in the late 1970's. She said she would bring me a fan but she never did. My back was wet from sweating and I went back down and requested another room. She said she only had suites left and I would have to pay more money which is ridiculous-where does customer service come into play? She did not look me in the eye and acted irritated. She called her boss who told her to put me in another room and charge me $25.00 more! This room was not a suite which was strange as she said suites were all she had left. The room was not any cooler. I tolerated the night with no sleep. I think I would have done better staying in my car. Breakfast was a joke. Hardly anything to eat. Man I met at the tiny breakfast "closet" told me that no one wants to stay here as the air conditioning in none of the rooms work-said all units need replaced and they don't want to foot the bill so they ignore people complaining. That is why the rooms are so affordable-you literally roast. I stayed here in May and I wouldn't even imagine the temperature in the rooms in July and August. I couldn't tell you about the beds. I stood up most of the time near the window praying for a gust of cool air. All the hotels were full in the area or I would have went...
Read moreI am pretty laid back about where I stay, but this was truly an unpleasant experience. The building is very confusing, there are several other businesses on the lobby level so if you accidentally enter the building from the back it doesn't seem like you are in the right place. It looks like you are in a hospital which turns out you are. The staff when I checked in was pleasant enough, no complaints. The room I stayed in was very hot with no thermostat, the sheets and towels were dirty with a previous customers hair all over them and there is a weird window that looks in to the hallway. I did try to find another place to stay but every hotel was sold out so I sucked it up and decided to stay. Just before 11PM a guy used a key and walked right in to my room. I freaked out and called The front desk to be told that he works there and accidentally went into the wrong room while delivering coffee. There is no circumstance where any hotel should open a door without knocking. The fitness center is a joke in the creepy basement and the continental breakfast was mini muffins and bagels. Overall the place is dirty and creepy, I will never stay here again and would not recommend...
