This property is so special. I grew up seeing this historical home and always wondering what it was like inside. This is our second year booking the Collier Hotel for a week in summer to come back to the magical place that is Scott Valley with family and friends.
The owner Cassie is a pleasure to work with with clear communication and keeps the property clean and well taken care of. The booking process is very simple and straightforward on their website.
This historical home from the 1800's, previously a bunkhouse for miners among other things, has seen a lot and has great energy. It's nice to see it retains it's character. It's lived in, comfortable and perfect for groups and well behaved dogs. Everyone has space to come and go as they please, there is plenty of space for groups to sleep, the yard is enclosed and perfect for kids, the kitchen has space for groups to dine and in the summer the porch is the place to be.
The adjoining garden is used to grow various organic greens to sell at the Etna farmer's market and they are delicious. Cassie will put you in touch with the gardener to buy as many greens as your heart desires.
An added highlight is the evening "show" when the bats emerge at the abandoned building across the street. It's amazing and magical to watch. AND no mosquitos! Thank you bats! Tip: they come out at dusk, maybe 8pm?
An added benefit is Ray's grocery across the street and you are walking distance to the great bars and dining that Etna now has to offer. Grain Street Bakery, Etna Brewery, Wildwood Crossing Cafe, the museum, Dotty's, PayStreak Brewery, Pig Alley Attic Trunk and Peddler Mart, and of course Denny Bar.
There are a few areas the property shows wear, like the living room and patio furniture. It seems those areas that get the most use stand to have new (or even newer) furniture. It would also be nice to be able use the outdoors in the evening more easily. The addition of a picnic/dining table near the porch would be magical. And maybe some better porch lighting. After all summer nights in Etna are a special thing! Who wouldn't want to be out under those stars dining al fresco?
Thanks Colliers Hotel for creating great memories for our family and friends! We'll...
Read moreIt's hard to decide which part of our stay was the worst at this hotel. When we arrived and were escorted to our room (all are upstairs) the hotel reeked of body order from the hikers who were staying in the other open air rooms. There is no AC, so all windows and doors are open. Each bedroom on the shared hallway has an open transom, so there is absolutely no privacy or insulation from the noise. All 4 upstairs rooms share a single bathroom. That bathroom needs remodeling for better functionality, including having somewhere besides the floor to place your toiletries bag. Our room faced the front of the building. Across the street (30 feet?) is an abandoned and boarded up building. That building houses a huge colony of bats, which the proprietor bragged about. Perhaps his nose has become immune to the smell of bat guano. Have you ever smelled bat guano? It is HORRIBLE! There's no A/C in the hotel, so our only airflow was from a box fan in an open window. I was unable to fall asleep and was trying all night to cover my nose just so I would quit gagging. At 2 in the morning I considered taking my pillow and blanket downstairs to sleep on the living room floor just to escape it. Additionally, other guests were walking up and down the creaky, wooden stairs until will after 1 AM. Because there are no sound barriers, this also kept us awake. Had this hotel cost $50, some of this may be excusable. But we paid almost $100 for his horror. If I had had ANYWHERE else to go in the middle of the night, I would have left and done it. I don't think I even need to go into the displeasure of sharing a small hall bathroom with this many other guests, who are all in desperate need of a bath. Oh wait! I forgot to mention the road noise. The hotel is on the main drag in town. All night we heard logging trucks, etc. racing down the street. At 5:30 AM, we were entertained by the sound of the big rig arriving to unload groceries directly across the street at the...
Read moreWell the reviews are all so old... we stayed one night on 05.23.2025 The hotel is old and historic. Thus you are going to have some un-even doors, a sticky window, some rust spots on the old sink fixtures. However... This place is a gem. It's great location, one block out of downtown Etna, makes it easy to walk home from Denny Bar or Etna Brewing. The manager, Derek, is a great guy to talk to, was helpful, punctual and caring. This place is dog friendly (for $20 extra) and bonus there is a great outdoor grassy area fenced in perfect for playing fetch or just rolling in the grass while the owners sip wine on the porch. There is a FULL kitchen with everything you need, and a grocery store across the street so you could just stay in and cook all your meals. We simply stored wine in the refrigerator. There is a nice living room - lounge, with TV, games, easy chairs and so on. There are two "suites", room 1 and 2 that are half a floor wide and run the length of the building. They have their own bathroom. They are (about) $40 more a night (I was eavesdropping) Then there are three small rooms (#3-4-5) that share a bath at the end of the hall. Room 1 is downstairs, the others are upstairs.
So we had room 3. Front corner room, windows facing out two sides of the room. We could open them, and there were screens halfway. The room has AC. The WiFi was strong and fast. Plenty of open plugs to charge. Adequate lighting. Comfortable bed, two sitting chairs, chest of drawers and hooks on the door. The room was very clean. Furnishings are old but comfortable and not worn out. We were the only guests upstairs so had the shared bath to ourselves. Shower pressure low, water very hot, no problems. Again it is older so there was a rust spot in the corner of the shower pan.
So why 5 stars? Well this place oozes charm and history, and it is a beautiful building. Again, Derek was more than helpful. It is a great place to stay in a small mountain town. We...
