Extremely unfriendly customer service and predatory booking practices. I'd absolutely avoid this place, but if you have no other options as Mendocino is a small town that books up quickly, prepare to encounter self-righteous front desk staff who don't understand the concept of service, know that they charge immediately, and don't expect to be able to cancel no matter what kind of cancellation agreement you agreed to.
I was excited to stay here, but our plans changed just hours after we booked the room for several weeks in the future. I contacted them immediately to cancel but received no response to my email or phone calls until the following night AFTER they put through the charge on the room -- I'd selected a book now pay later rate, but their fine print said that they charge all bookings within 24 hours (so by "pay later", they mean not this minute but functionally they charge immediately).
When I finally got some contact back from the hotel, they told me the rate was not refundable because it was marked as their APR rate, despite that no definitions of APR or mention of non-refundable appeared on their own booking search results page or the terms and conditions that I clicked to agree to when I paid. (The surly employee claims it was listed in a pop-up from the complete room description page, which was multiple clicks away from anywhere that I was in the booking process on their own website.) I did agree to a $30 cancellation fee and got a confirmation email stating full refunds minus fee until 14 days prior to the booking, which to me pretty clearly indicates that cancellations are possible.
Unfortunately we had to contact our credit card company for resolution because the hotel appears to find no fault in the judgment of their employee who interrupted and yelled on the phone when contacted by both myself and my husband, hanging up on both of us -- The hotel owner was supposed to get in touch to resolve this but hasn't, as well as not responding to the credit card dispute.
They have had plenty of time to try and rebook the room, on a summer weekend which is now completely booked at their hotel and most if not all the other hotels in Mendocino, but instead they twiddle their thumbs and wait for the dates to pass to potentially claim in the credit card dispute a lost opportunity to rent. Likewise they steal from us the opportunity to offer the dates to friends or family if their unethical room-booking business practices are insufficiently deceptive to warrant a return of our money by the credit card company. If it's not refundable, at least let us let our loved ones use it, even...
Read moreI just came home from a four day/three night stay in the Topaz cottage. I will say that the young lady in the office was quite warm and welcoming, and the cottage was nice as well as clean. However I do not think I will be returning! When I spend upwards to $1300 for three nights in a B&B I do have a few expectations, a clearly marked driveway for starters (as we drove right by it the first time and then had to guessed on where to turn in after turning around). Now I completely understand we are under Covid-19 restrictions, that being said, I was told at check in that there would be no "maid service" during our stay, OK I understand that, then put ample "supplies" in the room for the length of the stay (Towels, Coffee, Cups, Soap, etc). I was quite excited about the Breakfast's after filling out the menu at check-in. I was extremely disappointed!! The first morning (Saturday) my husband and I both had scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, bagels, the baked good of the day (Bagels), orange juice and fresh coffee. The eggs were rubber and the coffee was "french pressed" and absolute Mud. The K-cups were better. The bagels were delicious and the fresh fruit was good. The second morning (Sunday) we had ordered the crepes, I had the savory and my husband had the sweet, as well as bagels, the baked good of the day (Nut bread), orange juice and fresh coffee. My crepe was filled with burned mushrooms and the crepe was very slimy (as was my husbands), we each took one bite and that was it, Terrible! I still don't know what the nut bread was supposed to be, but my husband thinks it was supposed to be banana, it had absolutely no flavor at all. The bagels weren't even toasted. This morning (Monday) was the worst! I had Huevos Rancheros and my husband had the eggs again. I couldn't even taste them, the egg was raw and they looked disgusting. The eggs were again, rubber. Oh, but this time the bagels were burned, black burned! Now some of these issues may have been caused by the fact that they had to be packed and taken to the rooms (Covid again). I highly recommend to the owners that if this is in fact the case, then adjust your menus accordingly. All I know is that I spent far more than what this weekend was worth and I left for my 5 hour drive home on an empty stomach. This B&B has a lot of potential as the gardens are quite beautiful. But, in my opinion I wasted the money, I had saved since February,...
Read moreMy wife and I stayed in the Amber Room for one night over the weekend. Check-in was quick, and the room had a balcony and was very clean.
Pros: Clean room with a pleasant smell. Great location , close to the city and main attractions, with the possibility of watching the sunset from the provided chairs. Comfortable bed and pillows. Very quiet ,no noise issues (despite what some other reviews mentioned). An ice machine, tea, coffee, and oat cookies available 24 hours in a room beside the lobby. The room had a jacuzzi (which I didn’t use), and the shower was clean with good water pressure. Tea, coffee, microwave, and iron provided in the room. Fireplace and heater in the room. A supermarket called Harvest is just 2 minutes away by car, open until 10:00 PM , very convenient. Good and decent breakfast with a beautiful ocean view , scrambled eggs, bagels, sourdough toast, coffee, tea, cream cheese, chia pudding, granola, etc. Breakfast starts at 8:00 AM and the staff were very nice and welcoming. I personally recommend planning a visit to Russian Gulch (about 2 miles from the inn) — it’s breathtaking nature and a must-see.
Cons: No cell phone coverage (which could be a plus for those who want to disconnect!), and weak Wi-Fi in some areas. The room has no mesh screen, so you can’t leave the door open for fresh air; also, there is no A/C for warm days. Curtains need an extra light layer behind the main dark curtain , this would allow natural light while keeping privacy. A bit pricey, though understandable for the location. Reception did not accept my request for a late checkout. Standard checkout is 11:00 AM, and I asked for 12:00 PM (which I think is reasonable, especially as check-in is at 3:00 PM). I left the room clean like my own home, only this experience affected my overall rating, from 5 to 4.
Overall: I recommend this inn and would...
