UPDATE: I upgraded from 3 to 4 stars based on how nice the staff is. AND as of July 31, 2022, I was told that renovations are "coming soon." Which probably means check and see if there is any construction on the property! If you don't mind a do-it-yourself lodging, in a scenic and convenient setting, it's a great deal for the region. The lodging is charming, with a historic, vintage feel. Stately property as you drive in and lobby felt like a mystery novel. The front desk staff- I interacted with Silvia and Curtis - were quite nice, which makes a big difference feeling welcome, especially for a solo traveler . I stayed 3 nights and it was a great change from camping! Major drawback: No refrigerator or microwave. Also no hairdryer (you can get one at the front desk), no room service (you can request fresh towels at the front desk). Front desk closes at 10 p.m. Cracks in bathroom tile and sink. But shower works Ed fine. Small screen TV (21 inches?) The room was very spacious (two queen beds) on ground floor overlooking a pretty field. Nice deck outside bedroom. No private- it could potentially serve as a walkway for other guests though that happened only once.

The only thing good about the Hill House is its location. We were very disappointed when we checked in. The Hill House was one of the first inns in Mendocino and has been used numerous times in movies and on television. I had gotten a deal on Groupon and was thrilled but the place had changed hands a few moths before we got there and although it was advertised to have a restaurant and pub on the premises, there wasn’t any kind of food or drink availability. I paid extra for an ocean front room but what they didn’t mention was the ocean was a half mile away beyond several houses and a hill. The receptionist was anything but cordial and welcoming us was more like it was the greatest of inconvenience to have to help us. The Inn itself is very run down and wasn’t very clean. If it wasn’t for the charm of Mendocino itself it would have been a disastrous weekend but the Inns location, just up the hill, an easy walk, from the main village made up for it all. That’s not to say I would ever go back there.

Being fans of Angela Lansbury and "murder, she wrote", we were excited to stay at Hill House. Most of my daughter's wedding party was staying there. Checking in on Friday was easy. Sylvia was friendly, helpful and informative. We loved our vintage, comfortable, spacious room 109 with the garden view. The negatives were we could not get the TV to work properly, there was no mini fridge and the low to the floor toilet situation in the bathroom was almost unbearable. My 86 y.o. mother had a difficult time trying to maneuver in the toilet/tub area. We wished there could have been a Continental breakfast in the lobby to go with the delicious coffee they had available. Also. it would have been a huge plus if the restaurant upstairs was open. You had to trek into town if you wanted food. All in all, we enjoyed our stay and the wedding was fabulous!

We had many issues with our stay. We tried to speak to the manager, but they were never available. We left a message with the front desk to have them call us, but they never did (or did but never left a message as I was without reception for a lot of this trip).

I sent an email to the manager (who has yet to reply) and it read:

Upon check in, my partner was told he had to pay an additional $55 dollars for our stay. He as confused as to why, and the lady at the front told him to just pay and she'll figure out why later. It wasnt until I told him it was the pet fee that he knew what the fee was for. Mind you, I requested a pet friendly room when we checked in, and called to confirm our room was per friendly.

The electrical outlets in our first room are a fire hazard. Our cell phone chargers would fall out of the socket upon plugging them in.(we recorded a video).

Our volume was not working on our TV We asked the front desk for assistance, but they said we had to wait until the morning to fix it. My partner took it upon himself to fix the TV. (we recorded a video)

There were ants. LOTS of ants... IN the pet friendly rokm on the first floor. When we came back to the hotel after the first night, ants were everywhere. Our dog's food was covered!!!!!!! I was laying in the bed and kept having ants crawling all over me. There was a trail of ants coming from the the window and were all along the wall where the bed was. We called the front office, and they said there wasn't anything they can do until the manager arrives the next morning. We were about to leave the hotel, and then the office called and informed us they could move us.

I am not sure why the front desk was having a difficult time figuring out how to resolve all these issues. They kept saying " we have to wait for the Manger." "The Manger is sleeping, there is nothing we can do now." The manager needs to be more accessible OR the staff needs to be better trained. We travel a lot, and this was a very, very unpleasant and...

I couldn't recommend anyone stay here In good conscience. I was stuck finding a last-minute place to stay on a budget through the HotelTonight app. I mistakenly relied on the reviews in the app instead of looking at Google Maps. Upon arrival, the deficiencies at this hotel became apparent. There was no clear sign where the check-in desk was. Instead, we peered through windows only to find materials strewn about and gutted walls. When we finally found the check-in desk, the lady behind the counter took over 30 minutes to check-in one group of three people. For whatever reason, the check-in process for us was easy enough and we made it to the room.

Initially, the room we stayed in looked fine and spacious. In fact, one of the critiques of this hotel was that the fridge and microwave were in the bathroom and we found that instead both the fridge and microwave had been removed from the room entirely. Contrary to what we had been told before when we called ahead of our stay, the TV in the room was fine and included many channels via cable. The problems, however, started soon enough. I noticed ants crawling up and down the walls behind the bed. There was a weird burnt-like spot in the carpet floor. The key lock was rusty and only made it possible to lock the room via slamming the door (which I'm sure our neighbors did not appreciate it). The room smelled musty. The windows locked screens and the thermostat adjustor came right off when attempting to adjust. Overall I would summarize our stay as uncomfortable. Surely this place had its heyday but it can no longer call itself a...

This place must have been something back in the day, you can tell it was once a beautiful destination. But, the years have not been kind to Hill House Inn, and it is in a sad state. First issue, upon arrival we found out that they no longer have cable and are in the process of getting a new carrier, so, no TV. To be fair they do state that in the confirmation e-mail, but we somehow missed it. Refrigerators are not provided in the rooms, but my husband is an insulin dependent diabetic so we had to have a refrigerator. We were able to purchase one for $20.00. The restaurant and bar are no longer open which was disappointing. From the outside to the inside, everything is so run down. It was warm and we wanted to open the windows, but they have no screens on them, and unfortunately our ocean view king room was one of the rooms that had no balcony. We finally decided to open the windows and risk letting the flies in so we could cool off for a bit. We were told that it was under new management, I can only hope that the new people restore it to it's former glory, or at least update everything. When that happens, we will be back, but not while it's still in it's current condition, not at the price we paid. The saving grace were the ladies cleaning the room on our floor, they were very friendly and helpful during out stay! Also the man who brought us our refrigerator was very nice. We hope to try a stay here again one day when the...
