The staff here was decent, I donât really have major complaints with them - but feel like I need to leave this review as I am still unsettled by what happened on my recent stay. In short, I would not recommend staying here as a solo female.
I had a slight medical emergency (currently have a broken leg, in a cast and use a scooter, my leg was swelling and I needed to get ice and elevate as soon as possible). Best western hartland was the closest hotel to me. I pulled in and was surprised to see it was a motel, not a hotel. But it looked clean and the front desk guy assured me it was safe. I requested a handicap room, but later realized I wasnât given the correct key, and instead was given the key to a regular room. This is where it went downhill. Prior to this, the front desk man said he could bring me ice since it was across the parking lot and in a separate room. I called and left a message for ice. None one answered and no ice arrived so I loaded into my car and got it myself. There were a few unfriendly people in the room next to me. They were sitting in their vehicles (some of which had broken windows covered with plastic) and staring at me. As soon as I went to get ice, they were right behind following me. I felt like a sitting duck being that I am a young woman with a broken leg. I canât defend myself. So, I was already scared and nervous. I got back into my room with the ice and was changing clothes when my door started opening, I heard the rattling and âclickâ of the lock being opened. There was a man with a key to get in my room. I had the bar lock on thankfully so he couldnât fully enter. I called the front desk and he explained that he gave me the wrong key, and therefore someone else was given a key to my room as well. He was very apologetic and I let it go.
Then, from about 9:30-11pm there were 3 young guys literally right outside my door, swearing, drinking beer, spitting, and talking loudly using slurs. I tried to wait it out but it didnât seem like they were moving so again I had to call the front desk. He came right down and made them move across the parking lot. I needed more ice at this time but did not feel safe leaving my room.
Overall it was a pretty miserable stay as I was so anxious after everything that happened I couldnât sleep, was in a lot of pain, and was incredibly nervous to load my car up the next morning. Safe to say as soon as I opened my door the unfriendly neighbors were out there, staring at me again and repeatedly walking past my door/vehicle (I could not park in front of my room as there were cement barriers I couldnât navigate due to my scooter).
I am well traveled and have a lot of experience as a solo female traveler, but unfortunately I have to say this was one of my worst hotel experiences.
All this to say, when I called to check out the next day the manager said he had heard about what happened the night prior and said they discounted my room. According to my bank statement they discounted the room by $11. I do not feel that is fair, and would hope something more...

If you are choosing to stay at this hotel, I assume it is out of necessity because it's in such a small town, however if you have the choice, I absolutely warn you to stay away from here. The extra 20-30 mins to stay elsewhere is worth it. I was emailed by the front desk manager less than a week before my reservation to notify me that they had canceled my reservation based on a previous interaction with my "mother in law" and "brother in law" after which we had been banned from this hotel. My mother and brother in law have never stayed at this hotel, and we live far away in New Mexico, had not stayed since December to see family. Keep in mind that my husband and in laws have a different last name than me and so the people they were concerned about (last name Thomas) would not have been my in laws, but related to me!!
When we tried to contact the hotel about the obvious mistake, the employees, especially Marilyn, were horrifically unprofessional, accusing my husband of lying and saying that she saw him hanging out in the lunch room/lobby with my "in laws". She also named the people by name and the nature of her conflict with this guest, revealing personal info about the guest. When we said we had no idea who that person was and we certainly were not related to them, she also claimed she could recognize my husband, and that we paid for their room. Clearly, she would not be able to verify that it was him, as she was on the phone with him and not in person because we live in NEW MEXICO. I also have no idea how she would be able to tell we paid for their rooms, as there was no attempt to verify our REAL identity nor our payment information. Even looking back at my best western account, there were no fraudulent charges that could have led to this confusion.
When I called and asked to speak with the manager (last resort), i was told there were no managers on the weekend (for a 24 hour hotel?!) and they would have him call me first thing after the weekend. Still have not had resolution, and no longer trust the integrity of this hotel, the owner or staff. At the very least, this is poor records management and unprofessional behavior of the staff. I would almost laugh at the absurdity of the situation if it wasn't so...
Read moreThis place is disgusting. I am also contacting the health department over their pool. Do not believe that itâs the tile. The kids will tell you itâs the water that is green and they canât see anything. Iâm hoping my kids donât get sick from being exposed to so much algae. While the PH levels are balanced in the pool NO ONE has bothered to clean it.
They refer to themselves as an old school hotel. No sir, you are a motel. The house keeping staff can be heard loudly swearing as they clean up the rooms. With that said they only clean upon check out. We had a two night stay for two people and were given the tiny bottles, but no ones around for you to ask for more.
I went to the front desk after seeing their pool license was expired. I could see the lady watching me from the window but she never bothered to come in the reception area, until I walked out the door. I watched her read my note, she comes out yelling they have a current license. She however did not show me and left me a voice mail on the room line after. I informed the other guest not to believe the lies about itâs the reflection of the tile. They seem to know that superficial scoops of water show a clear cup of water. I was never able to actually check the voice mail. The phones donât give instructions on retrieval and they made no other attempts at contacting me. If I could leave zero stars I would. I was scared to Look for other issues regarding the room. I did smell something odd from time to time near my fridge. The sheet was actually a mattress protector and not a sheet, but I wouldnât have been able to sleep there if I found more issues & hotels were booked in Brighton, but now I understand why the tournament doesnât recommend the motel 15 minutes from the field.
Also the toilet hardly flushes and the sink...
