I may have just stayed at the most hidden gem in Ludlow, VT- the "Governor's Inn!" Hidden because it was closed for over 4 yrs, then purchased and renovated for 9 months. Finally, it opened in 10/2020 to a pandemic, and not surprisingly, to a dearth of customers; few who left reviews (only 5 reviews from multiple travel sites at the time of our reservation). With New Year's Weekend just around the corner, and a strong desire to "not" spend another weekend socially distanced at home, we wanted to find a romantic, wintry, COVID-safe, get away in VT.
The reviews weren't very helpfu l- only 3 were recent, but at the time of our decision, we didn't have the whole back-story. Their website was more so, showing the rooms/prices/and amenities. Google maps depicted it on Ludlow's main street, just down from Okemo ski resort, restaurants, and liquor store. Mostly based on location, cozy fireplace in the room, & breakfast in the morning before venturing out, we booked our reservation.
OMG!...were we in for an unexpectedly great stay!! The Governor's Inn is not just a whitty name - it has a cool history to go with the cozy VT B&B ambiance (point of emphasis, it's a B&B, not a swanky Aspen retreat)! The owners are German immigrants with a great story, and equally great hospitality (in my experience around Okemo, I would say "un-rivaled!"). Ohhh, and that breakfast...3-courses every day with a Germanic flair to the preparation; we were both so satisfyingly filled, we went without lunch the duration of our stay!
The final highlight was Holger & Rosi, graciously allowing us to use the dinning area every night to eat our takeout dinner. Every breakfast and dinner, they coordinated with each guest to enable socially distanced eating, broke out the nice china & silverware, and serviced our dinning on par with posh, highly-rated restaurants!! I could go on with more laudatory qualifiers, but hopefully you get the idea...the Governor's Inn will be the first, & only place we look to stay for our next...
Read moreAfter a 4-day Vermont Inn to Inn Walking Tour, we agreed to spend one additional night in the Ludlow area. Our decision to stay at the Governor's Inn was the best decision of the entire trip. Both Rosie and Holger were outstanding hosts, accomodating our needs numerous times to make sure our stay was what we wanted it to be. For example, Rosie overheard me mention that I did not care for eggs at one of the Inns we stayed at. The next morning, she made us a special ham and bread pudding breakfast dish that was out of this world as an alternative alongside a parfait of homemade granola, fresh berries and vanilla yogurt to die for.

The food! Incredible Air Conditioning Privacy Cleanliness Detail-Orientation
The Inn was cozy and elegant at the same time, with numerous small "spaces" to sit and have coffee or a drink outside on the porch. Every detail was attended to and Rosie even allowed me to practice my German with her. We cant say enough about this Inn or its proprietors. If you are looking for an experience that "feels" European, gracious and abundant, this is the place for you. By the way, I never write reviews. That will show those of you searching for a great experience just how special this place is.

They recommended places to eat and visit, and they even set up a table for us to have takeout dinner from one of the local places. They remembered our preferences and went out of their way to be great hosts. The breakfasts were outstanding here! Rosie and Holger provide a delicious 3 course breakfast every morning. We barely needed a lunch most days because they served so much great food! We don't have any special dietary needs, but they would be happy to make adjustments for any guest that needs them. In the afternoon they also provide tea/coffee and a muffin from 4-5 pm, and they also serve bottles of water and soda in the mini fridges in the rooms. They even have some herbs like mint that they grow on the back deck and serve with guest breakfasts. Their attention to detail is evident in everything they do, and I loved learning about all they had done to update the Victorian home. Definitely give the information packet about Governor Stickney a read - it's very fascinating. We would definitely...
