I have had the liberty of staying in the High Sierra Hotel more than once in the Terlingua Historic District. In 2016 I made a week-long photographic journey to Big Bend and Terlingua to gather material for my book project "TEXAS BADLANDS: The Ultimate Black and White Journey" (now available on Amazon) due to the central location of the Historic District and the iconic Terlingua Cemetery. Some of the amazing 35mm shots of High Sierra/El Dorado Hotel can be found in the book as part of the Historic District in Chapter 3 "Living Ghost Town." The rooms are nice and clean perfect for a badlands romp by a nomadic bushwacker like me, don't expect the amenities of a Grand Hotel in Terlingua, Texas......you better be humble. No complaints whatsoever here, but keep in mind sometimes the water systems in Study-Butte/Terlingua experience problems and if someone is above you in the room on the same water heater setup, you may have to wait for the hot water to replenish etc. but you'll live.

A nice stop after driving all day. We booked online but did not get our room code in email. Went to the restaurant and the young lady fixed us right up. The rooms are adequate: bed, air conditioning, clean water. The wife loved the big bathtub. A bit pricey maybe but location, location. If we cared that much about a room we would have stayed at the Hampton in Alpine eighty miles away. But we spent the night here and now ready to explore. We ordered from the restaurant and we both thought the food was great. We got the fajita plates and ate in our balcony watching the sun go down. Oh, and don’t forget to turn your water heater on when you get there. WiFi worked for the phones but not the computer - go figure. So we hotspotted the phones.

I stayed overnight here while visiting Big Bend National Park on a cross country road trip. The selection of lodging in terlingua is somewhat limited. I selected this place based on reviews. Considering the remote location, I gave it an extra star. The bar and grill looks like a lively place. I didn't eat there however since I wanted to eat at another location here in town. There was live music last night, which I suspect is pretty common here. They're putting a lot of work into this place. The room that I had had a leak under the sink. Some of the rooms are being completely renovated and it's obvious that they're putting new furniture in. The parking lot is paved and in good condition.

If there was a way to give this place no star i would. First off this place is no were clean as they make it look in the pics Picture day most have been on clean up day as to the wheel barrel in the pic is replaced with trash. First thing we saw pulling up out side the rooms and behind the restaurant there were beer bottles, cans piled up with trash bags full of trash around the back of restaurant and under a few of the steps going up to some of the up stairs rooms looked like maybe people were living there. Once we got up to our room and open the door and it was very hot in side i go to turn the ac on and it was unplugged i plug it in and it doesn't work. At a closer look it's rusty down in the inside and parts were falling off. it's easy to see that it hasn't worked in a long time. We go back into the restaurant/Bar were you have to get your key from the bar tender (FIRST FOR ME) and let him know what was up he tells us i don't know what to tell you theres no one to fix it and we don't have any other rooms guess you are out of luck but if we wanted a refund he could get it for us. Being it was 9:30 and we hadn't ate. we set down to eat while he tries to get us a refund. The restaurant is no better it dirty old and run down full of drunks/druggies acting like drunks do talking load staggering around hitting on women right were you are trying to eat thats a whole another story once we finally get someone to wait on us after setting there for 20 min we ordered it took another 50 min to get a hamburger and three tacos that turned out to be totally wrong and cold. We go ahead and eat cause by now it's getting really late and i still have to drive 1.5 hour to alpine to get another room. I eat the cold tacos so my wife didn't have to eat cold food O BOY LUCKY ME!!!! We get our refund and head back to the room to get our stuff witch I was happy to see was still there. A guy pulls in below our room and starts to unload his stuff and as i'm coming down with our bags he ask if we had ac i told him our story and he said he had no ac either and his bathroom was filthy. But had to stay cause he had no were else to go. About that time a couple ladies come walking out of a room a couple doors down from his and ask if we were staying next to them. I told them that we were leaving because of our room had no AC. She told us they didn't fill safe there at all cause some guy was watching every move they made while they unloaded their car and they were scared to stay but had no other place to go either. The other guy and his wife told them they were staying and to let him know if they needed anything. So once you are there if its packed in the park you have to drive an hour and a half to find something else at the closest and at 9:30-10:00 most people just put up with it and stay. This place is a total dump totally trashy inside and out with plenty of trashy people hanging around. It's a shame the area needs more places to stay if this place would clean up there act run the local drunks/druggies off spend some money on new A/C and make stuff a little nicer they could have a great deal going. For a person that spends over 45-60 nights a year in hotels all around the USA at our national parks this is the worst I have ever come across and at 200.00 a night IT'S REALLY SAD WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO...

AVOID! I wish I could give a half star! Don't be fooled by the online photos and/or a description of the room when you call before going! We arrived at the "Hotel" to find what looked like an abandoned set of buildings that someone had built a sort of bar/restaurant on top of. I do realize it's a ghost town.....but it literally looked abandoned. We had to talk to 2 people before finally a woman named Judy was retrieved who could actually help us. Judy seemed to be the one running the books. She filled out our paperwork for the 4 nights we were supposed to stay with a credit card to hold the room and had me sign. She gave us a bunch of instructions about what to do once you get into the room. We were confused until we walked into the room. We were the only occupants of the 21 rooms. We stayed in the "King Suite" for a "deal" of $104 a night. We walked in to a very hot room. The first thing to do was turn on the A/C. It took the better part of the evening to cool down which was not pleasant after an eight hour car ride. We then had to turn on our hot water heater below the sink....which was in the bedroom. There was an old tube tv that had 5 channels, a mini fridge, and an old microwave. I know those aren't crazy important. The sad part is that we had been told over the phone there was a refrigerator....not a tiny mini fridge. We had pre-packed food in an ice chest. Our ice chest held more than the fridge provided. The door to the bathroom was broken and wouldn't stay shut leaving NO privacy. Then the first night we were there it started storming and hailing. The window in the bathroom leaked so much it looked as if it was raining inside! The "hot tub" and shower were disgusting with no water pressure. We cut the trip short after 2 days. I went to let Judy know, but she said she could provide no refunds and that my card had already been charged for 4 nights. She said the owners were out of town for the week with no cell reception and that "she is told not to give refunds but doesn't know how it works, and that's just what she's told." She then told me they were at max occupancy (I'm sorry, but BULLSHIT, there was nobody else there!) so she wouldn't be able to do it most likely. She pointed to the paper I had signed to "hold the room" pointing to small print reading "no refunds". This was NOT how she described it up front! It is a scam! THey know people will want to leave upon arrival so they charge credit cards in advance while saying they will be "holding the room". This happens before you even see the shitty room! She gave me the e-mail for the owners. When I e-mailed the owners I gave Judy a call to let her know I had sent it. She was very rude saying the owners may not get back to me for a week. AWFUL PLACE. Avoid at all costs! We are still fighting to get...

Basically the wost experience I have ever had at any motel in this or any other space time continuem. Staff knew nothing of our reservation, and when I say they knew nothing of our reservation I mean...NOTHING. Got passed off to two different people right up front, then passed off to the bartender who was there to drink beer.... he wasn't even working... in his defense he did all he could to help us he just didn't know what to do or how to do it. They didn't even know which rooms were occupied.... they literally used keys and opened rooms to see which were occupied ( good way to get shot in Texas). At one point we were offered to sleep in the old bus parked outside,,, It smelled like something Indiana Jones would be afraid to enter. After over an hour and a half, we burned all the daylight, we were on motorcycles in deer infested roads, now after dark, and we were finally given a room,,, the suite,,,, the suite is really a $35 room where you would expect to hear random gunfire in the street anywhere else in the U.S. It only had one bed, for two guys that are NOT gay and didn't feel like experimenting since one of us had a sinus infection and snores like a Harley Davidson. The sink smelled like an open sewer and the microwave was growing some sort of 6th grade science experiment but thank God I had my camping gear so I could sleep on the couch... The AC did work great though. After talking to several other guest the next morning at the breakfast joint down the street, found they had very similar experiences.. After returning home and talking to a co-worker who stayed there 8 years ago I got basically the same story. I realize there are very limited accomodations in the area but just bite the bullet and stay at the snooty resort in Lajitas or stay in a tent inside Big Bend you will be better off. If your only options are this place or an open grave, choose the open grave, you will thank me for it and save...
