Super 8 Metropolis
First off, I spend a lot of time in hotels and motels, and I rate them based on value for price paid. I do not expect a $75 hotel to be the same as a $250 hotel, and I don't expect a $40 motel to be the same as a $75 hotel. This will likely be a pretty long review. I will mention minor petty things, but I won't take stars off for them. For example: a peeling popcorn ceiling in a room, or a poor caulk job around a sink in an older, less expensive place. Now, on to my impressions of the the Super 8 in Metropolis Illinois. I like that it is kind of isolated, but right at the interstate exit. There is a farm field to the north, an access road to the east, a highway to the south with nothing much on the other side, and 5 acre chunk of land with a lonely Pizza Hut to the west. That means no sketchy characters hanging around the parking lot or in the lobby. There's really no reason for anybody to be on, or drive through, this property unless they're staying here. The staff is friendly and available. Plenty of parking. This is a hotel with entrance to the room via interior hallway. An indoor pool, which is actually clean and functional, is available from 7am - 9pm. The common areas in hallways are clean. There are entrances and stairs on both ends of the hotel. It's a two-story hotel, but I didn't see an elevator, so request a first floor room if that'll be a problem for you. They do not serve breakfast, but coffee and juices are available in the lobby in the morning, and there are small coffee makers in the rooms. I stayed in a standard room with a king bed. It was plenty spacious and equipped with a decent size mini fridge, microwave, good sized TV, a small desk with office chair, and night stands on either side of the bed. Large room, but no soft chair or sofa. Nice sized sink/closet area with plenty of counter space around the sink. Toilet and tub/shower combination are in a separate area behind a door. Room is clean, and the carpets are cleaner than most. Bed was softer than I would like, but that's just a matter of preference. Lamps have standard 115v power outlets. Wi-Fi is good, and the TV HDMI inputs are accessible with a fully functional remote. I stayed in a smoking room, which are usually the last to be updated. Everything was functional and clean, but the ceiling does have peeling popcorn due to no primer before installation. Climate control unit worked perfectly, and the filters were spotless. There was a problem with the microwave, and they swapped it out immediately with no hassle. There is a very small town to the west, and if you can't find what you need there, Paducah, Kentucky is 5 miles away, just across the river, with every restaurant and store that you could possibly need. This is one of the nicer budget hotels that I have stayed in. Summary: If you want a clean, quiet place to stay at a good price, Super 8 Metropolis is a...
Read moreOkay, so me and my parents traveled from st.louis to metropolis to see the Superman Festival and I made res. Like 5 months ahead. The price was really nice (⭐)! We had 2 rooms both non-smoking. Immediately upon arrival the smell of smoke lingered quite strongly in the lobby. We thought well people are smoking outside it perhaps was just coming in through the doorway. I go to my parents room (112) before going to mine too unload some food into the refrigerator and when I opened the door the entire fridge wobbled. Simple maintenance would easily fix that issue but.... I continue to be encouraging to my parents that everything will be great. I head down to my room (104) and find the smell of cigarettes is awfully strong inside of it. I turn the air on cooler. They had it set to 74 which is totally cool I understand that at least it was on. They get a ⭐ for that! My room was very clean but very musty and smoky smelling for a non-smoking room. I wear a brace on my ankle so keep in mind my room is a handicapped and has a stand up shower, which BTW, is totally amazing! The bathroom was the best part of my room! Another ⭐ for awesomeness there! I really do not know how but later on night 2, I was laying in bed trying to go to sleep when all of the sudden, my room was filled with cigarette smoke! To the point my friends that I had to get my inhaler and take 2 puffs. I began to yell about being in a non-smoking room but I calmed myself down and remembered how when I was younger how I would smoke in those type of rooms. I shook it off and fell asleep. I didn't have too many issues but the ones I had were significant enough to say I'll never stay there again. My parents complained about their beds being uncomfortable. I personally found my bed very comfortable but I enjoy a very firm mattress! So if you enjoy soft, cushy beds, think twice. After looking into the vent in my bathroom I decided that it wouldn't be safe to turn on the ventilator fan! It was full of nasty looking dust! I have very bad respirator problems already so that was a no go for me. For myself I'll never go back because of the cigarette issue that never goes away! I'd much rather smell 420 because it doesn't effect my lungs the way those awful ciggs do! My mother most definitely will never go back! So if you are a smoker or younger you'd probably not mind it at all. This is my review in all honesty and fairness. Oh yeah the breakfast was really okay. I can't eat the food they had except for the apples. My dad did the biscuits and gravy and...
Read moreNeeding to attend my sister's funeral we came down and stayed the night before at this location. Unfortunately our departure was delayed and we were unable to use the pool. I don't understand why a hotel pool needs to be closed through the night so long as the noise is kept at a level that doesn't interrupt the other potentially resting guests it could invite more to check in? That's not the case here or anywhere I know of, but we weren't heart broken as we didn't really expect to swim and were beat by the time we arrived anyway. The dude working the front desk was helpful when I picked up the extra key and got the wifi password before turning in. The room was clean, the beds were comfy and I was very grateful that they still rented smoking rooms. The windows are wonderful, the ice machine was clean and in good working order. I missed the opportunity to access the pool and was to busy having breakfast from the basic Continental items they offered. Those included biscuits, gravy, waffles, oatmeal, cereal, coffee, & juice that sat next to the condiments available with them. Convenient location just off I-24, only one exit away from Paducah, KY (just a couple miles over the bridge crossing the Ohio River) & directly across the street from a 24hr. Truck stop an easy walk away that offered the basic gas station staples, included a restaurant, and had a room for anyone old enough for the video gaming (penny slots) also...
