After reading this, I know it sounds salty, but I'm just advocating for what you once had at the Shenvalee. Please bring it back!
"Very disappointed with The Shenvalee"
For years, the Shenvalee has been a course that was moderately priced and was a regular destination for this reason. The course, which is usually in good shape, is not a challenging course and is great for beginners or for anyone to just enjoy an easier, relaxing track.
For some reason this year...new clubhouse?, inflation?, greed?, they decided to increase rates significantly. Weekend rates are now $60 and weekday rates are $50!!! Just last year, I was able to get afternoon tee times there for $25 - $30. And now they're $40 (oh, $35 after 5PM when you might not finish in the shorter months of the year). Everyone understands that price increases are inevitable, but wow!!!
The thing that has always set this course apart for me and many others was that it catered to golfers that didn't want to pay $75 at courses like a Bryce Resort or Massanutten Greens.
I used to say, this course was fantastic because "they knew how to turn a profit because they know how to get lots of people to come out and play." AND they did it by having rates that were affordable and matched the level of the course difficulty and layout.
Well, I can't say that anymore, and I am playing other alternatives now. Thanks for ruining something that you've been known for for many years. The next thing you know, the membership prices will be gone and it will be another exclusive country club in the Shenandoah Valley (which might be what some of the "members" are trying to do).
Oh, by the way, while all golf prices have increased and it is quickly becoming a "rich person's sport," here are some other options at nearby courses that are the same price or cheaper but with longer, more modern challenging course layouts (18 holes with cart).
Lakeview Golf Course - M-TH - $46 F-S $53
Caverns Country Club - M-F - $30; S/S $40 (the Range Shenvalee used to and should be)
Heritage Oaks M-TH - $53; F-S - $58
Of course, if people continue to pay the rates, why would they ever lower the price. Well, for now, I will save a few bucks per round and go elsewhere. And it really does sadden me to say this as I used to enjoy going there 20 - 25 times per year as part of my 100-150 rounds of golf I normally play each year.
Here's to hoping (and I sincerely mean this) you'll change back to that nice, rural golf course you've always been, but probably not. It looks like $$$ you want to be like a "Northern Virginia" course...nothing special...
Read moreWent with a group a few weeks ago. The rooms are gross and in order to use the toilet you have to sit sideways. Coffee maker didn’t work.
Golf - was fun (27) holes but the amount of times either a “starter” or someone who claimed to be a Marshall would harass us on the speed of play. Seemed like “locals” run this with giving no respect to outside tourists.
The Pro who said his name was Nick was smug and rude from the start. He claimed our group was playing slower but with the amount of times we’re stopped by staff I’d agree. When we approached him on another matter about his staff he became defensive and acted like the people who are paying to stay the weekend are the problem. Seems like he’s a little too young to be a pro. Someone in the position needs to be less confrontational for them to succeed. It carried over to the “youth clinic” we heard him degrading some of the kids because of their golf ability. Again a guy teaching the game who doesn’t have respect.
Restaurant - don’t even bother wasting your $. How many ben hogan burgers can you eat in a weekend? Breakfast in the AM is good but don’t do the buffet get a egg sandwich.
Suggestions - friendlier staff or just knock the hotel down and build houses, seemed like that’s the goal. Send the pro to some sort of...
Read moreChecked in on a Sunday for a 3 day golf outing. Found the rooms to be very outdated and musky smelling with a dehumidifier running. Thankfully I have an understanding of the ac units finally got the ac to somewhat work by midnight. There is no maid service so you have to make your own beds and place the bedding and towels in a bag to get new. I was told by Donna the maid supervisor in a very harsh tone that they don't do maid service because of covid and then she stated it was from lack of help. The women was very rude during our conversation. The restaurant was pretty good but again overwhelmed from lack of help. Server Kayla was doing her best while the manager sat at the bar drinking coke. I found the wait staff to be very friendly. On our last day there were bugs in the bathroom unfortunately. Covid has ended have your staff clean the rooms please. As far as the golf course it was in nice shape short but nice. They need to empy the trash cans though. I found this place to be over priced especially with no...
