My recommendation: skip it if you have a non-frozen food palate.
We were trying to look around for a place to eat on July 4th for lunch. We saw that this place was packed and decided it was worth stopping into since not much was open in the area around 2pm.
They are a diner and serve southern style comfort food. They were playing country music like Thomas Rhett which was great because that is the genre I like. They had simple tables. Old fashioned. Place mats at every table. Bathrooms are basic and very old and weird layout since you go into the one room and nothing is in there, it is just an empty room and then there is another door to the actual bathroom /sink. I didn’t feel like there was any air conditioning in the bathroom. They have men’s and women’s bathrooms on both sides of the restaurant which is really great. I used both and it was the same layout. This place is very old since it opened in the 50s and it is family-owned.
Service (waitress) was great. She was fast bringing items we asked for such as the crackers. Our drinks never got empty.
On to the issue – the food. There were four of us. One of us ordered the salad and asked for no onions and there were none on the plate which was good but it was just a plain salad – nothing special. Our friend asked for saltines and they arrived quick. We ordered some hush puppies for the table and they were delivered with the little butter cups that restaurants buy in bulk. The hush puppies were not anything to write home about. I think the hush puppies from Cook Out fast food are of the same quality but maybe the ones from Southern Kitchen were kind of mushier than I like inside. The breading a little different but just OK. Two of us got yams and they came out cold so that was already no good. Everyone knows yams should be soft and warm. They did have some cinnamon on them but they were cold so it just ruined it.
The meals that were ordered at the table were chicken livers, chicken strips, and roast beef and brown gravy. The chicken livers were good enough for our friend to eat but he is not really a foodie so I wouldn’t go by him if you are considering this place. Maybe checkout another review for chicken liver opinions. The chicken strips were just some Sysco frozen stuff and they weren’t tender and juicy like strips should be. They were not finished. The roast beef and brown gravy – the gravy looked more like a gelatin and the person ate it but we were all really hungry since we hadn’t ate since 8am.
None of the food was worth ordering again. None of us would go back.
The 2 stars I gave this place was for the service of the waitress answering our questions, friendliness, and her quickness at getting saltines, butter, napkins and...
Read moreThis is an honest account of our experience at southern kitchen in new market va. Reading the reviews about this place left us excited about this local spot. Upon arrival we were sat very quickly and had our drink order taken as soon as we sat, we ordered a coffee and a "large" orange juice, the coffee might just be Folgers hotel brand coffee it was horrible basically undrinkable to us ($2.10). The orange juice was sunny d and the cup was a child sized cup ($3.10) we ordered a veggie omelette with no mushrooms and home fries ($7.29) and two eggs with meat and toast ($8.99) after we ordered it took 30 minutes for our 4 eggs bacon toast and "home fries" to come out (no exaggeration) I immediately noticed a mushroom right on top of the omelette and asked the waitress to take it back as we ordered it without mushrooms, she agreed nicely and took it back, we were concerned it would take another 20 minutes but she brought it back out 3 minutes later, they obviously picked the mushrooms off which I could have done myself. All of our food came out luke warm at best yet the toast was burnt. I had to ask what the "home fries" were because it was essentially a diced whole potato that was wet and nasty I asked the waitress to take it off our bill and get it off our table and she did nicely. We finished our food and promptly went to McDonald's down the street to get a hot fresh sandwich to fill my pregnant wife up after starving for 45 minutes at this place. If you are war era this place would be perfect for you, as all the local old people come here to enjoy their "food". All and all I gave it two stars because the staff was nice the bathroom was clean and the...
Read moreWe normally don't leave a review for places that we eat at on a regular basis we come here quite often and usually spend $75-$150 but tonight was terrible let's start with the waitress this particular waitress gives us an attitude everytime we have her the first time she did it we over looked it maybe she was having a bad night but each time after it was the same, so tonight we got there at 8:10 and didn't get our drinks until 8:37 and no she wasn't busy with other tables! We always have to ask for refills when we have her because after we get our food we usually don't see her anymore, she acts like we bother her if we ask for anything! Even our grandchildren noticed her attitude with us tonight. We ordered 3 large orders of boneless wings and got all 3 with bone in we did send 1 order back because our granddaughter doesn't like them with bones but the other 2 we kept just so they didn't have to wait on their food, we had 4 orders of mac and cheese and they were all left sitting on the table when we left it was all cold and dried up like the noodles were crunchy. My husband ordered the steak for two and over half of it was fat at least our dogs enjoyed it! This was by far the worst experience we have ever had here I think maybe its time to take a break and find another place to eat especially when your bill is $132 and most of it was left on the table because it wasnt...
