This one-night stay was booked by our travel agent, and what a regrettable choice it turned out to be. Had I been making the reservations myself, I certainly would not have chosen this hotel.
Originally, we weren’t supposed to end up in New York, but due to an Air Canada strike, we had to find an alternative way to reach our cruise departure for Alaska. That’s how Hotel Mint came into consideration—last-minute flight, last-minute hotel booking.
We arrived late in New York and got to the hotel around 11 PM (approx 20 minutes from the airport at that time of the day). From the moment the taxi turned onto the hotel’s street, it was clear that this was not a quiet or particularly safe area—we were right in front of the Far Rockaway-Mott Av subway station. The receptionist is even behind a glass door for security, which already set the tone.
As soon as we entered the building, we noticed stairs leading to the reception but felt relieved to see elevators. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get them to work. Despite repeated instructions from the receptionist, we couldn’t figure it out. My dad went to the front desk to check us in while my mom and I waited with the luggage by the elevators. After a short while, the elevator doors opened with my dad inside, holding our room key cards. We realized that the elevator only works if you are at the lobby level.
When we reached our rooms, I was anxious—having read previous reviews, I was bracing myself. I reminded myself that it was just for a few hours; we had to leave at 5:30 AM for our flight. The smell of weed was pervasive throughout the hotel, and there was a party going on right next to my parents’ room.
My room smelled musty, and humidity was visible. I didn’t want to touch anything. The AC was set at 79°F (26°C) and, being unable to adjust it, I went to my parents’ room to see how theirs worked—it had a proper control panel, unlike mine.
My parents requested a room change due to the noise, and the receptionist agreed. I went down to request a new room as well, but the receptionist insisted only one room change was allowed, saying someone would check the AC. I tried explaining that the AC had no controls at all, but she seemed unconcerned—likely because she deals with constant complaints.
A staff member came to inspect the AC. He called someone on the phone in another language, attempted to explain the lack of controls, and eventually made a video to show the issue. After some time, they agreed to move me to a new room.
Unfortunately, the new room smelled even worse—humidity, smoke, and strong perfume. I put a pillow over my face in the middle of the night to cope with the odors. At least the AC worked and kept me cool.
I could not wait for 5:30 AM to come.
When we left, the receptionist suggested finding a taxi down the street instead of calling one for us. I felt nervous walking in this neighborhood at that hour with our luggage. Thankfully, my dad approached nearby police officers, who escorted us to a car service next to the hotel. They were friendly, funny, and stayed with us until our taxi arrived. Which was a huge relief.
Overall, this was a stressful experience. I would have preferred paying more for a safer, cleaner hotel rather than ending up...

Had a missed connection, no choice but to layover in JFK. All nearby hotels were crazy expensive. Found this cheaper one on Expedia. Made a mistake by not reading reviews before booking. Biggest mistake of my life!
Location is in an unsafe, ghetto part of Queens. Lots of frequent violence and crimes according to my local uber driver. I arrived at 1.30am and was already hearing people quarreling on the street. I walked into hotel and front desk was barricaded with thick transparent glass to prevent intruders. I guess that's a telling sign. I have never seen this anywhere else in the world.
Front desk was totally unfriendly. You walk into the corridors of the rooms and immediately you smell weed everywhere. Other rooms were either talking loudly or blasting loud music. For god sake, it's 2am!
Walked into the corridors, two white men came out of their room and stopped to look at me. I quickly walked off. Got into elevator and a black guy grinned at me creepily like I'm some hooker! I prayed to god that I make it safe to my room alone!
My room was old and smelt of weed. Everything seemed like they're from the 1980s. Wanted to take shower the next morning but no hot water. Let the tap ran for a long while, still only cold water! Ended up not showering before heading to airport.
People were quarreling and shouting on the street in the middle of the night. I did not go out at all as it was so unsafe outside. My room was facing the street so I couldn't open the curtain at all even during the day unless you want every street person to look into your room 24/7! So it feels like night time the whole time!
Couldn't wait to check out to head to the airport. Never felt so unsafe in my life.
My uber driver who picked me up said he almost did not take my call because he didn't want to come to this dangerous area.
Stay elsewhere and save your own life!
Pictures on Google were fake. Rooms were not new like they had shown in...
Read moreThis was the absolute worst hotel experience I have ever had. I had a long, late night international flight into JFK, and since I am not from NY, I stayed at Hotel Mint to be refreshed/ well rested before traveling home by train the next morning. But unfortunately, I did not get a single second of sleep here. As soon as I walked through the doors, I was taken aback by the strong smell of cigarettes. Once I got to my room, I realized the bathroom had never been cleaned after the previous guest and the toilet was overflowing with cigarettes and toilet paper. I went down to the front desk and finally someone came to help. The man from maintenance was nice, but he did not clean up the dirty toilet water that covered the floor after he unclogged it. He also didn’t remove the cigarettes from the toilet, so I was forced to do so with my bare hands. But that wasn’t the worst problem. The walls were paper thin, so I could hear every conversation throughout the whole floor. The neighbors blasted music all night long, reaching decibels of a night club. There were also people loudly talking and running in the hallway throughout the entire night, as well as a loud beeping noise every 2 seconds and a machine that made a frequent exploding sound right outside my room. The toilet also made a loud sound every so often. And of course, loud planes frequently go by (not the hotel’s fault though). I asked if it was possible to change rooms, but there were no other available rooms, which is not their fault though. Needless to say, I did not get a single second of sleep. The place felt very unsanitary, and the sheets were covered with stains and holes as well. In addition, one of the outlets fell out of the wall and the bathroom sink sprayed everywhere. Please do not stay here. It is an...
