The location and view are the shining star of this hotel. The property is dated and needs to be refurbished as noted by other reviewers, but I booked and paid extra for a full bayview room and once I got into my room and walked onto the balcony, I really didn't care. I left my slider open and spent about an hour enjoying the fresh air and amazing view of the entire Upper Newport Bay. Sadly, this was then interrupted by a strong odor of marijuana coming into my room through the slider and open bedroom window. I closed both and left for dinner. When I returned about an hour later, I reopened the slider and window, but the same thing happened again within about 30 minutes. I went to the front desk and spoke with the manager, who was very kind and assured me this would be dealt with through their engineering department, as this was a violation of their no smoking policy. I was moved to a room with a very limited view, was told my rate was being adjusted right then to reflect the lesser view room rate, and was offered late checkout for the inconvenience. However, my final bill did not reflect the adjusted room rate and this same manager, the next morning, was no longer helpful and no longer friendly. He denied telling me that he agreed to adjust my room rate. He was pushy and condescending and lied to me several times trying to defend why the hotel would not be offering an adjusted room rate. ("The two rooms are the same rate" - they aren't per the website and my booking, as a full bayview room in the east wing of the hotel is more expensive than a partial bayview room; "You were put on a higher floor which is more expensive which makes up for the difference in price" - another lie, as there is no difference in price by floor at this hotel or I would have booked that. I was moved from one Elite floor to another Elite floor. Also, I was offered a choice of any of the Elite floors within my booked rate at my original check-in; and "Your second room did have a full bay view" - a third lie as can be seen from my two balcony pictures below. The first is the full view all the way down the bay, while the second is the partial view of only the very end of the bay.) Worst part of the whole thing - we're talking about $20. I read other reviewers talking about being nickle and dimed by this hotel, and it seems to fit. The person breaking the rules got to keep their full bayview room and was not inconvenienced in any way. I had to change rooms, lost most of my view, and was then treated like I was the one causing the problem.
5/21/2024 - No surprise that I received the same conciliatory response from the management that is posted for all reviewers who encountered a problem during their stay, but no solution. This was and is such a solvable problem, and the hotel management continues to refuse to solve it. I expected to get what I paid for. When I didn’t, I expected to pay less. Why would I give them "another chance in the future to provide you with a more pleasant and memorable stay" when they refuse to solve a $20 issue...
Read moreOur check in was easy and pretty quick. We had hoped for an early check in and it was granted. The front desk person was a female. She was very energetic and had a good sense of humor. I noticed how she was helping the person before me and she continued with the friendly and caring way with me. This is a good way to continue with my wife’s birthday weekend celebration.
The room was nice and clean. He had just come from the Newport Coast Villas. The Villas used small plastic coverings over the remote control, which made it feel safer. Other than that, the room appeared clean and hopefully sanitized.
We got a great corner room on the 9th floor, as requested. We had a partial bay view who was beautiful.
The reason for the 9 instead of 10... well, the last time we stayed at the Bayview was probably a few years ago. There was a smell on the sheets that was just unbearable. I believe the smell was some serious bleach or something. I believe the sheets were clean, that was not the problem. My wife’s allergies and mine were hit so bad, we had to check out at about 2:00 or 3:00 am, because we just couldn’t take it any longer. Our eyes were tearing up, nose running, headaches and body itching. That is why it had been so long for us to come back.
This time, we were hesitant as we walked into the room. I immediately went to the bed and smelled the sheets... all was good. We believed this stay was going to be good. Shortly after, my wife used the hand soap to wash up, for an evening out for dinner. The soap immediately activated her allergies. So I didn’t use the soap from the hotel. When we went to dinner, her eyes were tearing up and her nose was running. She was uncomfortable, because it appeared as though we were arguing or having a problem. Since I didn’t use the soap (from the hotel) I was not immediately affected. We had a great night, besides the watery eyes and runny nose.
We came back to the hotel and had a drink near the fire pits. The view and sitting area was nice.
When we returned to the room for the evening, my allergies got activated, because the soap had been sitting open in the trash for a few hours. I placed the soap in the tub, over the drain, with a towel over it.
Okay... I will finish this story. My wife and I had watery eyes and runny noses until Sunday. The symptoms began on Friday night.
So.... I gave...
Read moreOur stay was amazing, however it really had nothing to do with anyone going above and beyond for us. Majority of the staff was delightful and gave us many recommendations, however upon arrival we met with a staff member named Lorna. immediately upon arrival she was yelling at her coworker about answering a phone, and when trying to check in she immediately had an attitude and tried to say we were in the wrong hotel because our confirmation number was 10 digits instead of 7. I then proceeded to ask her, Well are you guys the Newport Marriott Bayview? When she said yes i told her we were at the correct hotel. Finally after actually checking our confirmation number and pin, she was able to find it. In that moment, we also wanted to extend our stay to another day. when asking her she basically said we had to set up a whole new reservation, which ofcourse did not make sense. We assumed that if the room we were staying in was still available, it would be no problem at all. The next day, we called to confirm was she had said, and it turns out we were right! The staff member was polite and efficient and just explained to us the extra charge that we were already expecting anyways. throughout that day all the staff members were amazing and let us know that if we needed room service or extra towels that we could ask and they would send some up for us. When we got back, we saw the same staff member Lorna. We asked if she could send someone with towels and she said with an attitude "Well you guys can take them, because I can't take them." I would not have had an issue taking up my own towels, but it was the fact that for 1, she had just a complete attitude not once but twice now, and 2, how is it that every staff member we came upon offered this, and she wasn't willing to follow through with what everyone else who was working there was offering? So of course at this point we tried to avoid her at all costs. But throughout our stay, it seems like if I didn't respond with the same attitude she was giving, she wouldn't really do anything for us. It was upsetting since, we didn't take this long needed vacation so i can have an attitude with a staff member because she was rude. This stay could have been a 10, but this staff member Lorna was just a pain and i would suggest anyone who plans to stay here to completely steer...
