"Highlander Motel Oakland has clean and comfortable rooms with newly remodeled insides. The motel has reasonable rates for the Oakland area. Easy and convenient location with Free Parking. All rooms have Cable TV, Air Conditioning, Fridge and Microwave, Hair Dryer, and Iron and Board." Their website boasts the above but we found this to be a half-truth. We had to be buzzed into the office to check in, which was dirty and cluttered behind the clerk's glass partition. The parking lot had many cameras, which black-flagged security. The railings on the stairs were extremely rusted, and one set of stairs leaned severely. The parking lot was filled with a large dumpster, a storage unit (POD), stacks of old furnishings, pallets of paint and remodeling materials. Enough space to park about 13 cars if all were careful. Newly remodeled insides? The walls had been painted, laminate flooring had been added, but the overall appearance of the room was hodgepodge at best. It appears the management bought out old furnishings from a hotel sale. The TV/armoire, bedside tables, side chair and a small table too small for dining or a desk were scratched, scarred and filthy inside and out. The drapes were shabby and unattractive. The door to the exterior was an old wooden one with only one lock (no flip security latch) and gaps so large you could see outside, let alone feel the draft inside. The heater/air conditioning unit was filled with dust, plaster, and other remodeling waste. It was plugged in but we didn't need the debris spewed around the room, which was very small, less than 180 sq. ft. The bath featured a new tub and toilet, but had no towel racks or robe hooks. A new vanity was added outside the bath, but no soap dish or towel bars or rings were present. The bath towels and 1 washcloth were stacked on top (no hand towels), as well as the 1-cup coffeemaker and supplies. No tissues. A half-tiled wall backed the vanity mirror. There was a small 24" wide closet area with a closet rod but no hangers. No iron/ironing board. One measly bar of soap. The floor was covered with gravel and bits of plaster and when I moved the one side chair, it was obvious that the housekeeping staff appearance cleaned. As we were checking out the next day just prior to 11 AM, one of the hotel employees was banging on the hotel room doors and yelling it was checkout time. It was also obvious that the hotel had 'residents', one of which was seen in the parking lot being dragged out of a car by 2 men because she couldn't stand and carried up the stairs to a room 2 doors down from us. The noise from her family after her arrival could wake the entire block. Stay away from this run-down mess. Not worth an...
Read moreI had the opportunity to stay here through a program the VA referred me too in order to get have temporary housing while we explore other options. The motel is run by what appears to be a family. They all work together, each taking different shifts in order to better assist their guests 24/7. They were always on top of whatever there was facing them that day. I ended up staying here just under 60 days and it went by in the blink of an eye. The property has amazing views of the hills that overlook Oakland and SF. You can even look at the Temple located on Temple Hill. At night the views are amazing. The area is peaceful. This part of MacArthur Blvd is nice. I’ve walked around to local stores and laundry facilities and have had no issues. It’s a quiet, simple place that you can lay your head down and enjoy yourself. My room was great sized and modern. The shower had great hot water and amazing pressure. I always had clean towels too- something I always find of importance. The bed was comfortable and the tv always worked. The owners employ a young couple who are fairly new parents. They are worth every penny the owners pay them as they take care of everything down to the smallest detail. The gentleman always greeted me with a smile. His wife also acknowledged me daily with a smile. For some reason, I am finding it difficult to leave here. I’ve felt apart of their family. If I ever need a place to stay or can refer anyone to a hotel- I will always say the...
