Had a fantastic weekend at 85ten.
This hotel is more of a hybrid between a hotel and a bed and breakfast. There is a lot of common area to socialize with fellow guests but the 6 rooms are set in a traditional style across the hall from each other and each room has its own refrigerator. Like a bed and breakfast, breakfast is made by the proprietor, and you can choose what time you would like it ready because it’s made fresh, not all at 6am like done at a traditional hotel buffet breakfast.
On Saturday morning the proprietor Jill and her colleague Emily made poached eggs with bacon and a waffle hash brown along with orange juice and coffee - it was the perfect amount of food and cooked to perfection.
On Sunday we had Dutch Babies which is basically a pancake with a bit more eggs than normally used in a pancake - it was the first time I’ve had them and they were perfectly topped with a berry drizzle along with bacon, juice, and coffee to complement.
Basically just show up to the lounge, sit down, and get served without having to get up for anything which is nice when on vacation.
The rooms themselves have recently been redone and the bathrooms were just updated earlier this year and the workmanship is excellent. The king sized bed and pillows were very comfortable and also new. I need to find out what mattress brand that is!
We were lucky enough to get to enjoy the pool and beach at a sister property right in town on Lake Huron which was only a 8 minute walk from 85ten. I’m not sure if this is always permissible but Jill and her husband Glenn who we saw at the sister property were kind enough to let us use the facilities (possibly might be a fee so be nice!)
The water on an 86 degree day was refreshing, not sure if it was Jill and Glenn’s doing but I’ll take it!
Overall had an amazing stay at 85ten, probably the nicest accommodation on all of the Lake Huron Shore as far as hospitality of the proprietor, breakfast, workmanship and quality of furniture, room, and bathroom renovations, size and cleanliness of the room, and ability to use facilities at the sister property.
We look forward to...
Read moreWe stayed here for our 5th anniversary on Aug 11-13. This is a very charming place with that historic old charm. The place is very clean. Rooms are adequate in size, modern and very clean. Beds are very comfortable except a little on the low side and if you’re a side sleeper like me who sleeps on the edge of the bed you may start to slip off the side till you wake up on the floor. Perhaps a small low box spring might help give the mattress a little more stability in that sense. The ladies (like Jill & Emily) really bend backwards to make your stay comfortable and provide that concierge service for whatever you ask for (even if they don’t have it, they’ll get it). They are very friendly and sweet ladies. Breakfasts are really good. You book a time for breakfast with 15 minute intervals or whatever time slots aren’t already taken. Something different every day and fresh baked goods. If I had to mention a drawback on the place it is only the fact that there are no Individual thermostats in the room. So if you’re neighbor is cold & asks for heat then your room heats up too. If you’re too hot and ask for colder air, every other room will get colder air too. You can’t please everyone at the same time so that’s a drawback. Also, for a luxury boutique hotel I was surprised not to find much in the way of the toiletries you find at most hotels like small bottles of shampoo & conditioner, body wash, and/or moisturizer, and box of tissues which are usually standard items, but there were two small bars of soap though. Had I known I would have brought my own. But in fairness they just had a grand opening in May and I’m sure that reviews from guests will help them better understand what guests are looking for and in time it will only get better and better. If you are ok with the very very few what would be drawbacks for some people I mentioned earlier then you will enjoy this place. But all else is great. Highly recommend the place. Located right downtown Port Austin near the port & beach. Our special occasion was celebrated in a special way here. We will have fond memories. Thank you Jill,...
Read more85ten was an excellent venue for our daughter's mid-August wedding! We can't thank Jill and her amazing team enough for their care & support throughout the whole weekend and the months of planning beforehand. Our family and friends took over the entirety of the beautiful hotel and event space for three and a half days and truly felt 'at home' to host a very personalized, joy-filled celebration. Thank you, Jill, for honoring our many ideas and wishes and helping make them happen. Thank you also for your wonderful suggestions and great efforts in making this special time perfect. From offering decor accessories to developing and implementing a last minute plan due to rainy weather to providing options for professional, loving care for my elderly parents who were in attendance, your attentiveness and follow-through are unmatched! We truly appreciate your flexibility in timing and your personal help from set-up on Thursday to take-down and clean up after Sunday brunch.
