We chose this hotel after a long search driving from Michigan for my mother's funeral in Wheelerburg Ohio. We could have got a family discount at another motel but we didn't feel safe and that's huge with my PTSD. We decided on the Holiday Inn in Portsmouth I'm so glad that God led me to this place. We got into town an hour and a half early before our room was reserved but they kindly let us check in early which was a blessing after a long road trip. Upon my entrance I noticed the place is very extremely clean. This used to be my profession so I got a good eye for it. The staff was extremely accommodating and helpful throughout our entire stay. The room was comfortable very clean and came with a hair dryer and ironing board/iron, coffee maker, ice bucket and a nice little fridge that's behind a cabinet. The room was very beautiful and we slept very good there. The shower was absolutely amazing we got a second floor room. Great water pressure and nice hot water, very nice accommodating Dove shampoo conditioner body wash pump dispensers in the shower. They have a huge beautiful pool and I thought they had a hot tub I thought they did and they took it out. Maybe it was a lot to keep up with because they're cleaning is immaculate I can understand why they would remove it. There is a huge pool area that has chaise loungers and tables and just plenty of room to enjoy! The police station is right across the street so doesn't that make one feel even safer! They have a dog park that is a short distance. They have a lot of things to do walking distance from the motel there is the Portsmouth murals which is beautiful murals painted on a long cement wall buy the Ohio River. On our way to this area close to the murals was a little park and people riding their bikes it was so lovely! My other family members did not have such a good stay at other motels. I am very thankful for the Portsmouth Holiday Inn. I highly recommend that this is the place to stay because they care and it shows throughout. I did not enjoy breakfast at Oscars which is connected to the hotel. It was the morning checking out and I ordered oatmeal and toast. Both seemed rushed , oatmeal was mush and toast wasn't hardly toasted. My husband was OK with his skillet meal and I'm saying ok cause he didn't finish it like he normally would have. I did see great reviews so maybe it was just that morning. So the places I found that were really great to eat at that were close to this hotel was Ollie's barbecue it very reasonably priced. They had a menu that would please everybody. We had blackened cod with rice and a salad and it was absolutely delicious! And the other place is a rib place called Ribbers and they have the best steak!! Enclosing I would say if you want to really enjoy your stay in this area this is the only place, I had each of my family members stay at all the places around and everybody did not have such...
Read morePortsmouth area hotels that feel safe and still have property that is well-maintained has been a problem for us in the last several years! But we were pleasantly surprised with the Holiday Inn Downtown Portsmouth on our April 2025 stay. The facility has been renovated nicely with a lot of modern touches. We had the King room 322. The area that normally would've had maybe a sofa now has a new chair/ottoman- lounge like seating to stay with the modern touch. Looks pretty, but not very helpful when needed to go to the couch for a while during the night...it is too short for that & not very soft. But it was clean and modern.
The room had everything we needed, and the bedding was very comfortable. It had a mini-fridge, microwave, Keurig coffeemaker and a nice area to stash luggage & hang clothing. There was a workspace with good lighting. The Wi-Fi worked well also. Nice addition of several convenient ports and outlets on the workspace, as well as the bedside table areas. Great lighting over the sink area! The shower had great water pressure and plenty of hot water. Everything in the room has been updated, and I think the same for the hall/elevator & lobby areas. We entered into a nice clean room which is much appreciated on the road!
We did not use the pool or other options outside the room. But everything looked well-maintained.
The front desk clerk- Angela took very good care of us. The behind-the-scenes staff of housekeeping and maintenance do a fine job as was evident in things working well together giving us a very comfortable stay. We were facing the main parking lot from our room. It was quiet during the night. The windows have the blackening screen available along with the daytime screen giving whatever degree of light you might want.
There is absolutely nothing that I would have to complain about in this facility. It is a welcome option. We will keep this hotel as our favorite for future visits to the area. This trip was for a family funeral. Hopefully the next stay will be for a happier reason. But it was sure nice to know we had this option for our accommodations on this trip. Thanks to the staff! Keep up...
Read moreWe knew as we made our reservation that the hotel was being completely remodeled. They even called me to tell me the elevator would not be working during our stay. I applaud them for their customer service attitude.||What I CANNOT applaud them for are their efforts in remodeled room configurations. |1. The walls between rooms are paper thin which allows conversations from next room to be heard. A group(at least four) of young men in next room were partying until 11:45 pm where their cursing and loud conversations kept us awake.|2. The remodeled configuration does not include a hanging closet. There are two “coat hooks” on a wall which I guess you are supposed to hang items on. You “might” be able to hang two hangers on each wall hook. I agree long closets are not necessary but a small open closet with room to hang six or so items is not a luxury that can be eliminated.|3. The bathroom has been reduced in size to where standing in the tub/shower I can touch the facing wall. The commode is a mini size and is low in height. The toilet paper holder is so close to the commode that it is difficult to sit on the commode!!!||4. Finally. The rack room price was NOT justified by the facility. Even after the completion of remodeling.||I must say the room was very clean, the staff were friendly and there is ample free parking. ||Another couple in our party indicated they had stayed the previous week in a remodeled Holiday Inn in Buffalo and the room was exactly like ours (including pictures on the wall) with the exception it had a small open closet. Judging by that this must be a new Holiday Inn “standard” configuration. Someone at corporate that set this “standard”must realize the needs of travelers, not just the...
