We booked AWOL through Mr&Mrs Smith, a platform we usually trust for reliable luxury hotels. We even paid more than we wanted to because we thought booking through them would guarantee a good stay. Sadly, this was not the case. We were also promised a welcome gift of a bottle of Prosecco and soft drinks, but none of these were provided.
Check in was underwhelming. We arrived at sunset with heavy luggage and were met with a disinterested receptionist who clearly wanted to go home. There was no warm welcome, no offer of help with bags, and not even proper directions to our room. He just pointed in a vague direction. Dragging luggage across thick gravel to get there was hard work.
The room itself was disappointing. It had a strong musky damp smell on arrival, and the décor was tired and basic compared to the online photos. The beds were on the floor and very uncomfortable. We were grateful our stay was not longer than three nights as they were not good for our backs. The walls were paper thin. We could hear conversations from next door, and on two nights there was a dog left alone barking loudly for hours. There was no desk, no chair, and nowhere practical to get ready. There was very little space for luggage and only a few hangers for clothing, which made unpacking impossible.
Breakfast was far from luxury. A few pieces of fruit, some bagels, and yogurt if you got there early enough was about it. There is also nowhere to sit. You have to collect your food and either eat on your bed on the floor, or sit outside if the weather allows. In our case, the outside seating was soaking wet so we could not even use it.
The pool was much smaller than advertised, and the location was not as peaceful as expected. There is a big road in front of the property, and it is a 30 to 40 minute walk into town. The complimentary bike rentals were a nice touch and made getting into town easier.
The staff were fairly rude and disinterested throughout our stay. They did not greet us or welcome us when we passed by reception, and we felt like we were imposing just by being there.
Overall, Provincetown itself is lovely, but AWOL fell short in almost every respect. It felt more like a step up from camping than a luxury hotel. For the price, we would definitely choose somewhere else if we return to Ptown. In future, we will do a lot more research into our hotels rather than relying on recommendations from...

Read moreStayed two nights in May. Had a fantastic experience, would book again tomorrow, and highly recommend.
It's a highly renovated motel-style property on the end of the spit, facing out to the tidal marshes. The view from the rooms is excellent and the rooms, while small, are nicely done up. The mattress (on the softer side) is arguably one of the most comfortable I've slept on.
Breakfast is a simple and tasty affair served in the lobby and on picnic tables outside. A variety of breads, bagels, oats, yogurt, and fruits are available.
Clint and Andrew, the managers, are fantastic and a highlight of the property as well. They worked hard to sort out as issue we had booking through the website and were incredibly helpful and friendly to us and all other guests we saw during our stay. They care about this place, and it shows.
The center of town is an easy 30 minute walk away and they have bikes available for day-use on a first come, first serve basis. Be mindful that riders at about 5'2 or smaller may find the bikes a bit too large to use. In that case there's a rental shop just around the corner as bike explorations in the area are highly recommended.
Only downside was that the website can be a bit finnicky. It may show slightly different rates between the calendar view and the finalize booking page, but from our perspective a quick phone call sorted...
