Remember when you used to come up north to the family cottage a child when everything still smelled and looked like the 1970s? The gang of barefoot kids running around in swimsuits who just met but are instant best friends the whole summer long? The adults hanging out around a bonfire at night after a long day on the pontoon or whacking golf balls around? Nobody needed to lock their doors and there's not an xbox or cable tv hookup in sight because you don't need them; you're too busy trying to land a walleye off the dock? That perfect summer experience you thought evaporated with the last recession and/or since been commodified by large resort corporations to be a pathetic, plastic imitation of the summers so fantastic, Kid Rock wrote a song about them?||||Surprise, folks: It still exists, you just have to search a little harder to find it. From the pine paneling, loud floral print couch, and wild raspberry bushes flourishing behind my cabin, Lagoon Resort was the cutest and most authentically "Houghton Lake" place I have ever had the pleasure of staying at, and very budget-friendly. If you're a working professional who needs to GTFO from the city for a little for a mental health retreat, this is your spot for some quiet time at a laid-back pace. Meditate by the lake, do some yoga under the massive shade tree by the playground, slide down the slide in the lake, and still be able to check your email on the wifi (or don't...you're on vacation after all). If you forgot to bring anything, you can get it in town or at the party store next door (which also sells fishing licenses, if you need one).||||PS - Bring a toy to play fetch with Sugar, the owner's adorable retriever, and they do offer a...
Read moreI made reservations for a Friday night and Saturday night. Owner told us he had one of the apartments available. I assumed it would be by the lake since it is a 3 acre lake front propery. Oh no we were up by the road. And by the way the 275 ft lake front only 10 ft is beach. Also don't plan on renting a pontoon he never has any available because he only has a couple to rent. I was so disappointed I asked for a refund so I could find some place else stay go or go home. He would only refund one night even though we weren't going to stay. So we made the best of it. The apartment had a musty smell. The furniture was old. It was hot with no ac or fans. The bathroom ceiling tiles were falling down and a towel was shoved behind the toilet I guess in case the toilet leaked. We went away for the day and locked both doors. When we returned the doors were unlocked and someone came in and went through my kids room. I know this because we took pictures of everything before we left. You may want to bring your own blankets and pillows too. There were old ragged couches sitting on the porch. No I did not sit on them. The only fire pit was down by the lake, you can't even have your own fire. To sum it up the owner is a big rude a**hole and the place is a dump!!!!!! I feel like I was ripped off. My kids and myself was so...
Read moreI found this resort on accident going on a small 3 day weekend trip with my mom for her birthday and the one year anniversary of my grandfathers passing. If you only knew the back story youâd believe as much as we did that it was fate that we had found this resort. After I spoke to the owner and his son we decided to stay. They are absolutely AMAZING people, warm, kind, helpful and very welcoming. The cabins are to fit all of your needs. We had a two bedroom ,one bathroom, full kitchen with dining area, living room and a sun room when you walked out of the sunroom there was a picnic table and a barbecue grill should you need or want to use it with a beautiful lake view. The cabins are fully furnished , well kept and extremely clean and it felt like home. The resort had its own little beach area with kayaks, paddle boats , pontoon boats , volleyball net a HUGE water slide and so much more. It appeared to be very children friendly with a full play ground area and a lot of childrenâs toys. I am beyond impressed with the resort and the fact that it is family owned and has so much history makes it all the more worth it. I plan on coming back every year if not more. I am beyond thankful for all they did to accommodate our needs and blessed to have met them. I highly recommend this resort to any...
