I don’t even want to give this so-called cozy B&B one star. I’d give it a -10 stars at least. I booked a room for my husband and grandson for six nights. They were going home to PA from NC to hunt. This is the first year our grandson would be hunting. He was beyond excited to learn one of his Papa’s favorite things to do and spend the whole week together. While speaking with the owner richard to book the room, he assured me they will love the room he reserved for them in the carriage house. After telling him it would be a late check in, he said he would put the key under the mat of their room. Upon arrival my husband found the room and searched for the key that was NOT under the mat. They went inside the main house to get the key and richard told them he didn’t get a chance to get the room cleaned. One room???!!!! Knowing they would be arriving around 7:00 pm at the earliest. He told them he had a room upstairs they could have for the night until he could get the room cleaned tomorrow. After climbing THREE flights of stairs to the ATTIC and finally getting the door unlocked, they turned on the light. Both my husband and grandson looked around the room, looked at each other in shock and the first thing my grandson said was, “Papa, we’re not staying here are we? I can’t sleep here. Who booked us a room at the Haunted Mansion.” They just left with no plans of returning. I called and spoke to richard to find out what had happened and he started off yelling at me over the phone. I was never so shocked in all my life by the way he was speaking to me. Shouting, yelling, making numerous excuses, insisting the 3rd floor was NOT THE ATTIC and NOT HAUNTED. He actually laughed at me a few times as well. I asked him many times if he was really the owner and said you’re a business man speaking to me like you are??? He never, not once even attempted to apologize for the room not being ready. Nor did he apologize at any time for being so rude, snippy and condescending. He just kept yelling and making excuses and at one point even threatened me with charging us for two rooms. He shouted at me several times that his house is NOT HAUNTED. As did his mother when she called me. That was weird!! For some reason they were insisting the house was NOT HAUNTED and it was NOT THE ATTIC. Yes, his MOTHER called me and she never apologized either. My husband said the ATTIC room was spooky, dirty and stunk! The whole place needed an entire overhaul. It is very run down and not maintained well at all. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. Don’t let the pictures on their website fool you. It looks NOTHING like what they are trying to portray. Holiday Inn and Comfort Inn WILL have your room ready, clean and be respectful and kind to...
Read moreBooked through Hotels.com. A better deal than staying at the few chain motels in town plus the ambiance of a small, truly cozy B&B. This B&B – listed on the National Register of Historical Places – is like staying in an English Tudor house without the transatlantic flight. Lots of dark woodwork in the foyer and sitting room; a grand staircase; a reserved elegance throughout. Well-worth the 30-minute drive to the heartland of elk-viewing around Benezette.||||Upon arrival at the “Best Bed and Breakfast in Elk County” we got bumped from the King Room 56 (largest) – Hotels.com selection – due to a previous guest extending stay. Richard (innkeeper) explained the situation that initially was disappointing and assigned the Jacuzzi Room (50) – a ground-floor room near the breakfast area with the only Jacuzzi onsite – at no extra charge. Happy with the change! Richard proved alwz congenial and accommodating. Free parking, either in its private lot or curbside. Downtown (such as it is) St Marys is one-half block away.||||Downsides: ||1) Room 50 had no clock and the desired 4:50AM wake-up was “too early” for the innkeeper to knock on the door; we had to improvise. (Interestingly Room 56 did have an alarm clock.) The room’s telephone looked nice but was nonfunctional. ||2) The breakfast proved rather spartan for a B&B: French toast, an orange slice, and endless coffee (we had declined the sausage but did opt for bacon, not provided). ||3) Tho surely not the fault of the inn, TV service is abysmal as station-selection is the most bizarre we have ever encountered.||||Despite that and contrary to others’ reviews, we found the facility clean and well-maintained; bedding very comfortable; décor appealing; innkeeper welcoming. Without hesitation, we would choose The Cozy Afghan B&B for future overnights in the northcentral...
Read moreThis Bed and Breakfast is mixed bag. The smoke detector in our room was hanging open with no battery. The host stated that there were other working detectors on my floor, so I shouldn’t worry. The bed was comfortable, the place was quiet at night, the air conditioning worked well, and the shower had plenty of hot water. But there was only 1 pillow, towel, washcloth and hand towel per person for a 3-night stay. No towels at the pool. There are thin blinds and the curtains don’t close and don’t block much light. The décor is shabby chic. While the bathroom counters, tub, and room surfaces were clean, there were embedded spots of grime all around the edge of the bathroom tiles which had clearly been waxed over. The pool water was clear, but there were huge areas of dirt on the bottom, which were NOT removed during our 3-night stay.
Breakfast is served in assigned shifts, not unusual in places with limited dining space. However, here you are given only 20 minutes to eat, because the staff apparently needs 10 minutes to reset the table for the next group. The breakfast is tasty, but are very small portions with no choice, other than a choice of beverage. Do NOT stay here if you are on a special diet, like a medium to large breakfast, like to linger over your morning cup of coffee, or want to get to know the other guests. The only other area to gather has only 4 chairs, each shoved into a corner; it is awkward to gather with your group and chat. There is no beverage service during the day and no snacks for guests.
The “service” attitude of the hosts varies from pleasant and accommodating to snarly and impatient. It is in the center of town, with walkability to a movie theater and several...
