Price was reasonable, rooms were clean, staff was friendly and happy to accommodate requests for towels, towels, etc. The bed, pillows, and comforter were all clean and comfortable. I slept well here, albeit cold if I kicked the cover off. Unfortunately, the A/C either runs too cold, or runs too hot and it automatically flips from cool to heat and vice versa if the thermostat is adjusted 2 degrees further making it difficult to maintain a good temperature. The room seemed stuffy and stale if you left the a/c off for more than about 20 minutes. We opted to stay cold because of the stale air and hot temperatures outside. The fridge, and microwave did their jobs well. It would have been nice to have had a little table to eat at in the room. Also the combo of “microwave, fridge, and coffee machine” is referenced as a kitchenette, which doused my expectations with water since I expect a small stove, sink, and cookware when a hotel normally advertises rooms with a kitchenette. On more than one occasion I could smell smoking from somewhere nearby from within my room. And each night I could hear the nearby rooms hustle and bustle with parents screaming at kids and stomping around as they prepared to depart. As well as cleaning of the unit above us. I could also make our conversation of nearby rooms while laying in bed with the TV on, these rooms have some thin walls. Fortunately the noise levels were reasonable most of the time, except for 10-12ish at night and 7-11ish in the morning.

Big no from me, firstly we booked it just because it said room with kitchenette and breakfast included, when we checked in there was no kitchenette and upon enquiry the receptionist or whoever it was ,very rude saying it's not in our room despite showing him booking confirmation with kitchenette, and the picture shown in booking confirmation with 2 queen beds but we just got 1 bed, they said we booked by third-party side "Expedia" so they even can't refund us, well it was too late for us to go elsewhere without refund so we stayed there finding it hard to manage without kitchenette being "Vegan" after we checked out on 4th day wife noticed our money got deducted lucky just $40, when we enquired they said microwave dish was missing which we never used but they won't listen and yeah if you are someone who can't take heat our room AC unit was hell no use it turns on and again off in a minute or 2 , and yeah they also don't server breakfast so make note on that too, if you are someone who can't sleep with noice so please stay away, the wall are so thin that our neighbor room had some drunken guests who started fighting from 1am till 3am and is someone walks on top floor you will here the bangs. So a big no from our experience, at least a good hospitality by owners or the receptionist would have attracted a positive review but they are so rude to gain positive business relation.

Life is Art is the slogan of the LiA motel in San Carlos. I love the way they have turned this mid-century motel into something special. The photographs are really beautiful and that is what attracted me. The red doors all have photos of local sights at the room numbers, which is very charming. Unfortunately, COVID has made some of what was special go away. The red pillows and bed dresser are gone. That was disappointing but unavoidable during the pandemic. The Keurig coffee maker had but one portion of coffee for the two of us. No idea where to get more. Another disappointment. And during COVID they cannot have the complimentary breakfast. Darn. What puzzled me was the plastic on the smoke detector. What is that about? We came back into our room and it smelled of sewage. Was the smell from the air conditioner or the fetid air from the alley behind the motel. We don't know but turned off the air conditioner. Then the room got too hot to sleep. Fortunately, the second night there was no smell. Sometime after midnight, a neighbor decided to take a shower. The noise from the plumbing was so loud that it woke me up. So was the squeaky hinge on their door. That happened both nights we were there. All in all, not such a good experience when I had high hopes.

The good:|- The room looks stylish, pretty lamps, nice furniture, color accent pillows and sash on bed|- The customer service, even at 4am the front desk person was pleasant and friendly|- Plenty of power outlets with USB-A (the old kind, not Thunderbolt/USB-C) chargers|- ADA-compliant bathroom that is really pretty, stylish sink, shower is really wonderful with dual heads you can run at the same time. Stylish black floor tiles on floor including shower. Shower has body wash/shampoo/conditioner dispensers which I love, I hate wasting those little bottles of shower products!|- Excellent lighting in bedroom and bathroom. Bathroom specifically has a motion sensor which is really handy.|- Fan in bathroom is great, so many hotels have no bathroom fan which leaves the room humid and stuffy, love there is a good working fan|- Pillows - there are lots of pillows that are comfortable||The bad:|- The noise - I got room 104, it is right by the office on the ground floor. I can hear every car going past on El Camino Real, every train going past, I can hear every after-hours conversation in the office as clear as if there was a only an interior door between us. The ice maker is right outside the door and I hear clearly every time someone uses it. The floors in the room above must be wood because I hear every footstep and in places the floor squeaks! Do not plan on sleeping in unless you bring ear plugs/a mask.|- The light leakage - The curtains don't close! This room is so tastefully appointed, why do the curtains not close all the way? There is a light outside that is on all night so you can't get the room to be dark.|- The bed is stiff. I'm spoiled, at home I sleep on a Sleep Number bed that is comfortable on my back or side. Not so on this bed, if you're a back sleeper you'll be totally fine. Side sleeper? Be prepared for your shoulders to hurt in the morning.|- One of the bars in the bathroom was bent down a bit like someone had taken a fall and grabbed the bar and it didn't get repaired. The shower curtain rod is rusting in spots.|- There is no place to work on your computer other than on your lap on the bed.|- There is no place other than the bed to put...

Review for Lia Hotel, San Carlos, California

I originally booked a two-night stay at the Lia Hotel in San Carlos and had such a pleasant experience that I decided to extend my stay for an additional night. The hotel is conveniently located on El Camino Real, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. For the first two nights, my stay was enjoyable, and the staff were courteous and helpful.

However, my experience took a downturn on the third night. When I returned to the hotel, I stopped by the front desk to grab another small bottle of wine to enjoy in my room. The gentleman working at the front desk, Bill, told me he couldn't find my reservation when I provided my room number. I explained that I had initially booked for two nights and extended my stay for a third night. Despite showing him my reservation confirmation, Bill insisted that I had checked out.

Bill’s attitude was less than pleasant throughout this interaction. He acted as if I hadn't checked in at all and seemed disinterested in resolving the issue. Even after I showed him my reservation again, he eventually found my booking but showed no concern when I mentioned that I had left some belongings in the room.

Furthermore, I mentioned to Bill that I had bought a glass of wine the previous night but hadn't finished it and asked if it could be replaced. He bluntly refused, and when I expressed my disappointment, he simply agreed but did nothing to rectify the situation. Bill's demeanor made it clear that he didn't care about my stay or ensuring a positive experience for guests.

This incident overshadowed what had been an otherwise enjoyable stay. It's unfortunate because the hotel itself is quite nice, with clean rooms and a convenient location. However, the negative interaction with the front desk staff on my final night left a lasting impression.

Overall, I'd rate the Lia Hotel at three to three-and-a-half stars. While most of my stay was good, the poor customer service on the last night significantly impacted my overall experience. I hope the hotel management addresses these issues to improve guest satisfaction in the...
