We had a largely disappointing experience at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort due to the mass amounts of construction that is going on throughout the entire resort. Prior to booking our trip, we read brief statements posted on the hotel website that mentioned renovations were being made to make this location a Grand Hyatt, so we were aware that some construction would be present. We received an email several days before our trip, notifying us that the water slide would be closed through the end of August with no other information regarding other closures or construction updates.
Upon arrival, we were instantly hit with the strong smell of paint fumes throughout the hotel. We were given complex and confusing instructions of which elevators are operational and that we must take two different elevators depending on where we are going within the resort. Walking to our room, there were signs directing guests to their rooms. However, there was no signage on how to get to the 4100 rooms, which led to confusion. Walking throughout the hallways, each staircase was wrapped in plastic and taped off. Large scaffoldings are throughout the resort obstructing views.
Arriving to our room, the room itself was nice and newly renovated. Our view from our balcony was directly facing a construction zone with port a potties and large trashcans so we were not inclined to sit outside. Each morning we stayed there from Wednesday - Saturday, we were woken up at 0700 on the dot to loud construction noises. The first morning, crews were building another scaffolding so we heard lots of metal pipes being dropped. The second morning, we heard the loud beeping of trucks outside our balcony and hammering outside of our room. In our room, there was a small note stating that the hotel is offering complementary earplugs and sound machines but no notification of construction times.
Attempting to get to the pool area was a challenging experience as you have to take certain elevators to get there and then go down a dark and dingy make shift hallway that is very much under construction to get to the outside patio area. We went swimming once at 2100 and the pool water was very hot and uncomfortable to swim in. We were also the only people at the pool area, which seemed to be a theme as we never saw more than one group at the pool at once. Online the pictures of the resort are beautiful and we looked forward to walking around and looking at the restaurants and marketplaces. However most shops and restaurants were closed or placed in make shift conference rooms during the renovations.
We attempted to visit the Spa Avania on property as it shows that it is open on Google and Google Maps however it was also closed upon arrival. Looking at the hotel website, it does reflect this closure but we were not notified of it prior to our arrival. We were only notified on a water slide closure. There is a fitness club and spa that is located across the street that the staff suggested we could use because of their closure. However, this is a long walk in the heat, and one of the reasons we chose the resort was for its beautiful spa, so we were uninterested.
We expressed our concerns and dissatisfaction with David and he was very receptive and understanding of our complaints. He attempted to rectify our concerns, but at that point we had already changed our flight to come home early.
We have stayed at other Hyatt Regencies and had absolutely phenomenal experiences in the past. The Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress Resort is our absolute favorite and our amazing experience there is why we booked another Hyatt Regency for this trip. However, this location did not even remotely compare. We felt the magnitude of the ongoing construction was not well conveyed to guests prior to our arrival which led us feeling decieved. I am sure this location will be very nice when the construction is completed however we will not be back due to our negative experience. I would not recommend this location ESPECIALLY while these renovations...
Read moreWhat a nightmare. If you have a vacation booked here (especially as a family) in the next several months, my advice would be to cancel.
I already have a list of items that have gone absolutely awry, but let me start by saying I am currently in a dark room holding my 15mo old and next to my 3yo, trying to get them a nap as the fire alarms are tested repeatedly after a whopping 10min of warning. This has been going on for 20min now and each test lasts as long as 45sec of speaking and blaring sirens.
Back to the beginning. It started to get off track right at check-in. I had requested early check-in prior to arrival, and we chose our early flight with the optimistic tone in mind when I was told they would put me down for 8am check-in and that occupancy was not full the night prior so there was a good chance to get a room in the morning. At 10:38am day of arrival, I texted the hotel asking and was told “I am looking and I was stay possibly about an hour maybe more due to there being 2 rooms, but I will definitely let housekeeping know to work on it.” Arriving with two exhausted kids up since 3am local time, we elected to enjoy the pools thinking we could catch a long nap for them over lunch time and get a nice reset. At nearly 1pm, we called the front desk to figure out what was going on and the person told my husband now “4pm”. I headed up to the front desk to clarify this huge discrepancy and was given a LOT of attitude by the front desk clerk (Hyatt - I am happy to provide you with the name of this extremely rude individual). He continued to reiterate that 4pm is the guarantee and occupancy can change, citing being full (despite there being HARDLY a soul around those days, literally). When I asked him if he was just saying 4pm to cover his ass, or if that was realistic, saying I needed to figure out how to get my kids a nap, he repeated “4pm”. Our room was then ready 18min later, right about the time my kids fell asleep in the car for what would be a crap short nap.
CONSTRUCTION very much underway all over the property. About a week prior to arrival, I had received an email about the construction situation. The update presented that only a couple of restaurants were still undergoing constructions. This is not the case at all. The playground is closed (important for us because - kids). Rooms are still undergoing updates (loud drilling heard just above us at 06:18 morning after arrival which woke us all up). Front desk not done (only two check-in places - good things it’s mostly empty!). Door keys and electronic key didn’t work. The only open restaurants are the pool bars, so after 5pm you have about 4 items to choose from for dinner. Even the lobby bar is not open. The parking lot is under construction and full of construction worker vehicles promarily.
The only access to the pools is down one of two extremely steep staircases. We had our stroller the first time we went, and had to carry it down. Had staff noticed our stroller, they may have thought to mention it.
Lastly - a potential safety issue. The day after we arrived in the afternoon, I noticed a sudden smell of rotten eggs. Concerned for natural gas related to the remodel, I called and asked that someone come check it out. It took about 25min for a maintenance person to arrive, who declined to say much of anything other than that he would confer with the front desk. After not hearing back from them for 45min, I reached out to find out they would move our room but another wasn’t ready. About 20min after that - the smell dissipated and I elected to stay in our room (not seeing what difference a room change would make and hoping whatever issue was resolved). Today the second day of our stay, we are smelling it again so now I’m going to go find another...
Read moreArrived and checked in without issue. Upon arrival, they inform you for the first time half of the hotel is under construction and that a lot of the amenities listed online are not available. They try and peddle a lie to you that the spa pool is available, and that construction will be finished soon (after speaking with a construction worker at the resort, I found out they will not complete until April of 2025, if not later). I then went to my room, where I had to walk through construction, dust and various other messes associated with construction. My first night at the resort, while walking to the pool I was followed from a hallway near my room all the way to the pool, where I was confronted and asked if I am even staying here. I found this very disrespectful and distasteful, considering I had come from the hallway by my room, and gone all the way to the pool before being confronted, and I clearly knew the way. Not sure why I was confronted if I am staying here by a security guard for simply walking through the resort I paid to be at. At the pool, ten yards from where I was confronted, I found a diamond ring on the ground and called the front desk, they refused to send anyone to retrieve it, and demanded I bring it to the front desk right away. Maybe if your security guard was busy actually securing the location and not harassing guests, you would not have guests having to run errands for your establishment. Furthermore, I was told there I could schedule an appointment at the spa and that they had availability. I was extremely surprised to see that once I got to my room the first day, there was not a single booking or time slot available in the spa for anything. I was there for five days, not sure how you can claim to have availability, but not. Another disappointing instance was when it rained. Not sure if this resort has no protocol for rain or what the issue was, but the entire lobby floor was soaking wet, there was no rug available at the door to dry your shoes, and the whole resort smelled musty after. Additionally, after the rain I could no longer use my patio for the remainder of the trip because of the improper drainage control on it. There were over 3 inches of pooled water outside my patio door. On my last day at this resort, I called in the morning before my hike to specifically ask for a late check out, when I returned I found myself locked out of my room with all of my luggage inside. I immediately called the front desk and asked to be let in my room and why my late check out had not been applied, explaining I needed into my room ASAP because I had a flight soon. I was told there was a mistake on their behalf and that someone would be there right away. I waited 15 minutes outside my room door, and there was still nobody around to help. I called the front desk once again and asked for them to send someone because I was in a rush and they have already dropped the ball by not applying my late checkout. After an additional ten minutes of waiting, security finally showed up at my door to let me in. I immediately packed my things and left. I will never be back here again, I am in disbelief how a four star establishment can be so terrible. This is easily the worst resort I have stayed in. I would compare it to a motel 6 of resorts. I advise you to call and inquire about the state of their construction operation before booking at the...
