My family, friends and I have been traveling to Castaway Lodge for many years. We go several times a year. We also have a tradition in my family that for the 3 days following Thanksgiving every year, the men of my direct family; Father and 2 brothers, go to Castaway Lodge to hunt and fish. This is a time honored tradition and we were there this year too, Thanksgiving 2014, and had a wonderful time, as always..
This is a First Class outfitting service. The people, the service, and the Lodge are as nice as any you will find. The guides, the staff, the food, and the atmosphere, are all outstanding. Sometimes the weather dictates that the hunting and/or fishing might be tough, but the people will do everything in their power to make sure that you have a good time and maximize the value of the trip and to make sure that their clients enjoy the best possible experience. All you have to do is choose to participate entirely and leave your stress at home.
One of the things that truly separates this Lodge from all others I have visited, especially ones that provide this type experience, is the owners. Kris and Wendy literally have you into their home; for meal time, and between and after the hunts or fishing trips. Very few Lodges do that; none others that I can think of offhand actually. These are kind, competent, interesting, and very intelligent people, that go way out of their way to help their clients create and record lifetime memories. Isn't that really why we all go to such extremes in the outdoors; for experiences that we can share for a lifetime?
For my family, we will be adding additional generation(s) to our Thanksgiving tradition in the coming years, at a minimum, because to not take full advantage of all of the personal experiences of this Lodge that Kris and Wendy and staff can help create is just a shame. And I want as many as possible to experience all that a Lodge, and family, such as this,...
Read moreMy 15 year-old son and I booked an airboat trip for February 24th, 2018. We rolled in early Friday evening, were met by very hospitable hosts and owners, Kris Kelly and his wife, Wendy. In short order, and right on time, we were fed an incredible seafood dinner consisting of shrimp, stuffed crab, catfish, mixed vegetables, and home made bread pudding. Horse shoes and washers until bed time. The lodging itself was first-class. Everything is brand new construction, modern, and clean. Clean bedding, clean towels, etc., etc. Saturday morning, after a breakfast of homemade sausage, egg, and cheese biscuits, we were met on property by our guide, Chris Cady. Cady was a great guy and a great guide. Knowledgeable, friendly,, personable and professional. I have a tendency to pepper guides with questions all day, and he patiently put up with it, while putting us on the fish like never before. My son and I have been on about 8 guided trips, and this was our most successful to date. Although we eventually lost track, we caught north of 45 redfish, trout, and black drum. That’s not a typo. We were hooked up two and three at a time repeatedly. It was crazy. Never seen anything like it. If the bite cooled off for even 10 minutes, he would crank that airboat and we’d be flying into yet another back lake in no time, with rods bent over no more than 5 minutes after stopping at the next spot. I’m telling you it was incredible. We caught over FOURTY-FIVE FISH between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The air boat was brand new. The rods and reels were all in good condition. I could go on and on. Bottom line, I would highly, highly recommend this lodge, and in particular the airboat fishing trip with guide, Chris Cady. These are good people who take what they do seriously, and they’re darn good at it. - ...
Read moreFrom the moment I arrived for our three day hunt, I felt right at home. Maybe it's because you are actually at Kris and Wendi's home, which they openly invite you into. They are very welcoming and it's obvious they care about their customers. They're pleasant, straight forward small town folks with a small town attitude who don't try to portray themselves as someone they aren't; Salt of the earth if you will. Everyone is very personable and enjoyable to be around. Kris's wife Wendi is a nice lady and goes out of her way to make sure things are organized and taken care of. I made a huge mess in one of the rooms, which I feel terrible about, but Wendi didn't come down on me too hard! She can make a mean crawfish etouffee/gumbo that will leave you wanting more.
I enjoyed the lodge. It's broken up into a living room in the middle with rooms off to the side, so if the TV is loud or someone is talking too loud, it shouldn't disturb you. The rooms have a window unit ac/heater and a ceiling fan, which is plenty.
The guides are nice guys I enjoyed hunting with; James, blonde hair feller from Wisconsin (forgot his name) and Kris. They weren't lazy and did everything they could to make the hunt enjoyable and easy.
The food was great. Everything about it. I ate like a king and may have even gained a pound or two in three days at the lodge.
If you have never hunted the TX coast you will get to experience what hunting the TX coast is all about. This is a beautiful area. If you get the opportunity to book a hunt through Castaway Lodge I don't think you'll be...
