I packed up and left within an hour of entering the hotel so this review is only based off of my experience/why I could not stand to spend a night there. I’ll start with the negatives because the positives are largely based off of the employee’s response to my concerns. - the first room I was placed in was not clean. At a glance it seemed fine, but after inspecting the mattress/bedding I noticed stains and hairs. I stripped the sheets to find no mattress cover. Just a thin felt rectangle (visibly dirty) that sat on top of the bare mattress, and a non fitted sheet… no mattress protector for pest prevention… nada. It was clear cleaning services were not checking the mattress or cleaning the beds appropriately. The mattress was sticky across the seams, black specks, blood/rust stains, and other debris. The curtains had blood/rust colored stains on them, and overall the room felt grimy. - I was placed in a new room far away from the original room after I showed pictures to the staff. That room was also equally gross. For a hotel that has high cleanliness ratings I was surprised. - hallways/elevators were dirty too. This tells me the cleanliness problem is probably not limited to the just the two rooms. - in summation… after having had to move two different times on a hot day with an arm injury, I decided to leave and ask for a refund. Now onto the positives! + staff seemed friendly and honest. They were shocked to see the stains in the first room. They moved me to a different room on a different floor (which is proper protocol). After the second room they gave me a refund promptly once I showed them the images of the room. + common area looked inviting + near a lot of lovely restaurants I wish I could have had the chance to eat at + a lot of people are complaining about the parking… but as someone who was raised in the DC area I would say it was very accommodating for a hotel in the center of a somewhat busy area. I am hopeful this hotel will improve their cleaning standards. I think it would be a fantastic place to stay for a night had it been cleaner.

Beautiful Vintage Hotel! We spent the holiday weekend at 24 South, since it is a bit too crowded at my in-laws, and things were perfect start to finish. This is an old hotel and it shows in a GOOD way! There’s huge glass windows in your room, beautiful crown molding and ornate details throughout the property. The property is very clean, not just tidy…CLEAN. There is no dust on the window sills, baseboards and vent grates. When those items are clean, you know housekeeping is doing their job. The mattress and all bedding were spotless, I check upon arrival. The bathroom was also immaculate. The bed was very comfortable, so were the pillows. The bathroom had good water pressure and an endless supply of hot water. Parking was very convenient with the connecting garage. You are right downtown by restaurants, shops and the seasonal markets. It’s within walking distance of Mary Baldwin and right next door to the Shakespeare theater. Staff is very professional and friendly. Our dogs and many others were very welcome. Guests enjoyed the comfortable lobby area to socialize at all times of the day. The bar and grill area was a nice wind down spot to relax before going up to the room. We had drinks and apps one evening, prices were reasonable and everything was great. The only minor upgrades I could suggest would be adding small bedside reading lamps and adding an extendable makeup mirror in the bathroom. This hotel exceeded our expectations and I highly recommend it.

Pricey! Hence, a 4 star review. The hotel is now 100 years old. It had gone through several phases. It had been closed a couple of times. But then this old historic hotel was bought, restored to reflect its heydays of the 1920s. Renamed from the Stonewall Jackson Hotel to Hotel 24 South, a better fitting name as it reflects the year it opened and the address. The sitting areas were lovely. The bar was fun with a great bartender. All of the staff were helpful and kind. Our room was modern, clean and very comfortable beds. Just wish they provided a mini fridge. My only complaint was the price, quoted lower over the phone, paid more when we got there. They charge hotel customers $7.50 per weekday to use the attached parking garage (that belongs to the city), yet the public pays only $1.50. I don't get that. It seemed that for the area and it being February, they were overpriced! Breakfast was $15. We opted out. If money isn't an issue, I highly recommend it, but it's not for the budget conscious traveler. I never got my AAA discount.

We have stayed at this hotel 3 times over a span of 5 years. Check in is always easy whether we are traveling with or without our dogs. The lobby is always clean, put together and welcoming. The checkin staff is efficient and able to answer any questions you have.

The hotel could not be in a better location is is such easy access to downtown! Literally a half a block walk and you are on their gorgeous street that is the heart of their town.

The local area is safe and easy to navigate. We have checked in in the middle of the night while on a long road trip and in the afternoon. Each time the hotel and parking garage we felt perfectly safe navigating, loading and unloading luggage. The parking garage is easy to access from the hotel via elevators. The parking spots in the garage are a bit tight so the better parker in the family will want to do the parking :)

Luggage carts are readily available and do the exact job we need them to when loading and unloading the cars.

We have always found the hotel nice to sleep at and never had any issues with noise waking us. The town as well is a bit sleepy after sundown so there is never much traffic noise

The rooms are nicely appointed and as depicted in photos. The tvs works for us with no issues. The beds while I worried they would be uncomfortable they were not. We slept well and I did not wake with any aches or pains. They are spring beds so you will move some when someone you are sharing a bed with rolls over. More so than a memory foam mattress. I did find the sheets scratchy but I have sensitive skin and it could also have been disinfectant or a cleaner used on the sheets. This would not deter me from returning but I would wear long sleeve night shirt there in the future.

There are ice makers on every floor in case you are traveling with a cooler that needs to be refilled with ice.

A complimentary breakfast is offered but we have never made it to...

So so sad that this experience wasn’t better. This hotel is very pretty and perfectly located if you’re visiting downtown Staunton. Staunton is such a cute town to walk around — lots of great shops and neat restaurants and it’s nice that they close off Beverly Street on the weekends. So what’s the problem? The hotel has very comfortable beds, but HORRIBLE bedding! They don’t use fitted sheets and just lay a flat sheet on top of the mattress (which doesn’t work for people who toss around like my husband). Then you don’t get a top sheet and just get a light weight duvet blanket with a light “cover” that ONLY covers the top of the blanket and just tucks over about a foot of the top! And there was a stain on the cover. It’s hard to believe they wash and replace both pieces in between each guest and it’s just gross to think about. And even if they do, I want a top sheet. I tried to sleep without any blanket at all as a result. I read lots of reviews before staying here that were very positive and didn’t see this mentioned, but later when searching reviews on “sheets” I found the same complaint a year ago and 3 years ago with management acknowledgements that basically said nothing to address (but obviously they saw them). When leaving, I did mention it at the front desk that we liked the hotel but that this was unacceptable for future stays, and the young lady just kind of nodded as if she has heard this before. Someone in the elevator told me she also thought it was really weird. It’s very sad that such a well kept historic hotel is obviously managed by someone who doesn’t know how or doesn’t care to properly make a bed for their guests. We’ll definitely be back to visit this sweet town, but will be...
